Prebattle

The wind blew briskly across the plains, the blades of grass waving in response as gusts threw them this way and that. It was a seemingly endless meadow, so vast that the curvature of the earth prevented one from seeing its edge when stood near the centre. And this was exactly where two trainers stood – Necromancy and -Adam-. The two young men eyed each other expectantly, each waiting for the other to make the first move. They stood with hands hovering over Poké Balls like gunslingers in the Old West, until finally the trainers moved almost in unison. A split second before his foe, -Adam- released a Jolteon from his Poké Ball, and in the briefest of moments a Kecleon joined her on the field, having been chosen by Necromancy. The two men issued their orders, and the battle commenced.

The battle began rather sedately. Bolt, easily the faster of the two Pokémon, didn’t move at all, instead closing her eyes. Karl the Kecleon cocked his head, curious as to why such a fast Pokémon had done nothing. Could it be that her trainer instructed her to use Rest by mistake? Or perhaps she was disobeying her trainer? Either way, the Normal-type began his first attack. It is widely known that Normal-type Pokémon, far from being boring Pokémon with no particularly special abilities, were in fact more akin to the jacks of all trades. Kecleon are no exceptions to this rule, and Karl was thankful of his abilities. He managed to muster a small amount of electrical charge within his body, and then concentrated it towards his midriff. In particular he had focussed the energy into the stripe that surrounded his torso, and as electrical power built up there it began to bristle and glow. Karl then loosed the electricity in a wide pulse, the electricity crackling through the air towards the still form of Bolt. However, the Jolteon had not been sleeping. In fact, she had been doing quite the reverse – she had been pooling together a large amount of energy and sending it outwards towards each extremity. Such manipulation of energy was very mentally demanding, but it would be worth the effort. Bolt opened her eyes with a start, and she became entrenched in light. Her body was completely hidden for just a second, and when the light faded it was revealed that a translucent sphere now surrounded her. The pulse struck this wall lazily, dissipating into the atmosphere; the barrier had saved Bolt from any harm. The Electric-type allowed the orb of light to fall, the energy dispersing and falling in a delicate cadence.

As soon as this was done, Bolt leapt into action. She growled menacingly at her opponent, and the wickedly sharp needles that composed the fur all over her body stood on end. Her haunches were up, and electricity began to bristle about her body. Sparks danced over the spines, and the whole of Bolt’s body began to glow with an intense yellow light. She howled viciously, and this massive energy was released in a vivid beam of light, aimed straight at Karl. The power struck him and he gave a strangled cry in pain. He writhed around on the ground, his skin beginning to singe from the voltage. The attack ended presently, however, and he struggled up. Sparks of electricity continued to circle Bolt’s body, with some residual energy having remained within her. Karl studied Bolt closely, and despite the pain he was in he grinned. It was not a happy grin by any means, however – it was the sort of grin a murderer would have when standing over his victim, knife in hand. Oh, the things he must have been imagining doing to Bolt. This referee can only speculate as to what exactly he was thinking of, but one can only assume that it was very much post-watershed, if you get what I mean. The grin slowly faded from his face, replaced by an expression of steely resolve. Karl was clearly ready to cause some serious hurt to Bolt. The Jolteon was feeling a little less confident now, but gave a bark as a sort of taunt. She was pumped up too – the battle had been a good one thus far.

Once again, electricity began to flow freely around Bolt’s body. There was no showy glow of light around her this time, however. Pure power courses through her every fibre of being, and she growled and barked as the voltage built up. Karl began to look very worried, and looked around for something to hide behind. Until he remembered that he was in a seemingly-endless field, and that the only thing he could conceivably hide behind was his trainer. While Karl the Kecleon was a borderline psychopath who probably liked to imagine desecrating the body of his foes, he wasn’t quite so bad as to use his trainer as a human shield – who else is there to feed him? He braced himself as Bolt gave a howl and several huge bolts of electricity shot out of her entire body, all converging on one common point – Karl. He screamed as a hundred thousand volts flowed through his body and fried his innards. The attack eventually concluded, and left Karl a twitching, smouldering wreck on the ground. He panted for breath, and slowly got up. Luckily his muscles seemed to be in working order despite the huge jolt. He prepared a counter attack, concentrating energy towards his mouth. He opened it wide, leaving his jaw slack, and a blue sphere of energy began to form within. It was small at first, but the orb grew in size until it nearly filled his mouth. It grew unstable, and Karl suddenly fired a bolt of energy towards the Jolteon that faced him. It zigzagged through the air and struck Bolt with some force, forming a patch of ice around where it struck, just below her neck. She winced and barked as the freezing cold cut through her. Her breathing became restricted for a moment, but once the attack was over the thin sheen of ice easily broke up. She glared at Karl, while he looked back with a somewhat vacant expression that only comes with the shock that results from severe pain.

Bolt was the first of the two Pokémon to move, though she wasn’t intending on doing all that much. She began to scrabble at the ground, throwing up chunks of dirt and turf that she then pressed together into one fairly large lump of grass and earth. She fashioned it to look vaguely like herself, giving it defined features, marking out a replica of her spiny pelt and long ears. Satisfied with her work, she then placed one paw upon the doll’s head. She passed a small jolt of electricity onto the model, and it suddenly came to life! It did nothing spectacular, however, as it was nothing more than a hollow shell at the moment. Keeping her paw upon it, she then began to shudder quite violently. Her very lifeforce was coursing through her, towards her right leg, and she began to transfer some into her replica. Unbelievably it began to grow in size and take on colour, until it was the exact double of Bolt! Two Jolteon stood before Karl, who could barely believe his eyes. He did a double take and waved his hand in front of his eyes, just to be sure he wasn’t seeing double. He looked up again and… wait, weren’t there two of them just now? One Jolteon now stood before him, and he groaned, figuring that either something was up or Mitsuzo-kun had been putting something in his food. He began his assault on Bolt by sidling up to her softly. He had a grin on his face that was quite unlike the sadistic smirk he had worn in the round prior to this. He draped himself over Bolt, but found that his charms were being ignored completely. The Jolteon looked straight ahead at all times, never even glancing once at the Kecleon. Karl scowled and walked away, back to his trainer.

Bolt then leapt into action, however. The deathly sharp needles that made up the fur all over her body stood on end. Her haunches were up, and electricity began to course about her body. Sparks danced over the spines, and the whole of Bolt’s body began to glow with a powerful yellow light. She did not howl like the previous time she performed this attack, instead simply loosing the electrical energy within her, aiming it straight at Karl. The power struck him and he gave a ferocious cry of pain. He thrashed about on the ground, his skin becoming even more singed from the electricity. He struggled back to his feet and prepared his next attack. Sparks of electricity continued to dance around Bolt’s body; more residual energy had remained within her. Karl gave a shriek and ran straight at the Jolteon. He was rather angry by now, and needed to take this out on something. He leapt into the air, still heading towards the Electric-type, and threw his entire body weight towards her. He landed with a dull thud on Bolt’s body, though she gave little reaction.

Karl remained on top of her for a moment, so Bolt began her next attack as quickly as she could. More electricity was pumped through her body, and even the air around her began to crackle. The Kecleon realised what was happening, and quickly shifted himself. He ran towards his trainer, but all of a sudden he was struck down. The Jolteon had fired great bolts of electricity out towards the Normal-type, striking him as he ran. He was thrown to the ground, where he once again writhed about in pain. He gave a growl, and got up, the look in his eyes one of hatred. He turned and ran at Bolt again, repeating his prior attack. He didn’t bother with the jump this time, instead running straight at her and hitting against her with a considerable amount of force. She was thrown across the ground a few metres, Karl landing on top of her again, but both Pokémon got to their feet presently. Karl ran back towards his trainer, fearful of a close-range attack.

Bolt began to growl at Karl menacingly. She channelled electricity throughout her body, sparks darting between the individual spines on her back. Her haunches went up as she continued to snarl at the Kecleon, the Normal-type cowering a little, and the charge in her body continued to build. Karl began his move, and closed his eyes. He was concentrating incredibly hard on something – that much was visible to the naked eye, as he was shaking quite considerably. The attention of the trainers was brought back to Bolt, however, as she had just given a loud bark. An arc of electricity was loosed from her body in a pulse of sorts. It sliced through the air and struck against Karl’s torso, causing him to wince. His eyes remained shut, but his limbs began to twist and contort as paralysis took hold of his body. His muscles were contracting because of the electricity, and his legs nearly buckled. With a grunt he managed to stay on both feet, and continued with his move. His whole body began to take on a blue-purple aura, and then his eyes opened with a shot. They looked as though they were aflame, coloured in the same hue, and as though he were in a trance he began to perform some odd hand movements. He placed his hands out in front of him, his palms facing Bolt, as if performing a mime routine. He turned and did the same to his right, behind him, to his left and above his head. He once again faced Bolt, and then, with a great shout flung his arms out! The aura around him was released outwards, but its passage was halted by some invisible force. The energy spread out as if it had hit a wall, and soon the two Pokémon and their trainers were completely encapsulated by the energy. Bolt felt her muscles tighten and her body seemingly become heavier, while Karl suddenly found that the electricity that had hindered him before had now upped his performance considerably!

Thus, for once, it was Karl who moved first, and very quickly indeed did he move. He quickly focussed energy towards the stripe across his torso, and it was soon illuminated with a bright, white light. The Kecleon raised his arms, exposing his chest completely, and he then began to swing his body around in a circle, as if trying to keep a hula hoop in place. From the band across his upper body came a multitude of stars that were fired towards Bolt like shuriken, spinning through the air. It was quite a show, but this only served to mask the dire nature of the attack. The stars ripped through Bolt’s body, before it began to disintegrate before Karl’s very eyes! Bolt’s Substitute was ripped to shreds by the onslaught, until it lay in pieces on the ground, having reverted back to earth and dirt. Suddenly, with a puff of smoke, the real Bolt appeared on the battlefield and gave a menacing bark. She then began her next attack, concentrating the energy within her body once again. Electricity coursed through every part of her body, but this time it was in a much greater quantity. The air around her bristled as her haunches went up again, and she barked as sparks crackled upon her skin. Then with a roar she loosed bolts of electricity straight at the prone Karl. He cried out as the electricity struck him and threw him to the ground with its sheer force. His skin began to burn a little, already quite singed from previous Thunderbolt attacks. The attack was brought to an end, and Karl struggled to his feet while Bolt glowered at him.

The Kecleon looked at his foe. He studied her, wondering how he was going to carry out his next attack. Would she go for the cute, puppy dog eye-type or the strong, macho man-type? He settled on the latter, and began to pull some frankly ridiculous poses. He flexed his arms, as if doing bicep curls with some imaginary dumbbell, and put himself into stereotypical strongman poses. At first, Bolt was wary, and wondered what on earth the Kecleon could be doing. This turned to curiosity, and soon she found she could not take her eyes off of that fine specimen of a Kecleon. Her previous hostility had all but faded, and she now gazed longingly at him. Wasn’t she supposed to attack him? Who cares, she thought. It could wait. For now she satisfied herself by looking at her ‘opponent’ and admiring Karl’s fine body.

Karl pulled a final strongman pose, and froze. His eyes darted this way and that, but he was unable to move a muscle. A small noise of fright escaped from his lips, and the paralysis took hold completely. His muscles contracted even more, and his legs buckled. The Kecleon’s whole body slumped into an uncomfortable-looking position that vaguely resembled the foetal position. He twitched as he lay there, while Bolt simply watched. She gazed at him longingly, until she had a thought. Shouldn’t I be attacking him? She shook her head and looked back at Karl. She was ready now. She growled, and began to circulate the electrical power within her throughout her body. The charge steadily built up, an electrical hum not unlike that heard at substations soon joining the sound of Bolt’s snarling. Sparks began to skip between the spines on her back, like miniature Van de Graaff generators. Her whole body bristled with power, and her haunches went up, signifying her imminent assault. With a great roar the Jolteon discharged a huge bolt of energy at the incapacitated Kecleon. The electricity struck Karl and coursed through his body, burning his skin. The smell of burnt flesh filled his nostrils, but he still was unable to move. All he could do was twitch and convulse as the paralysis maintained its stranglehold over him and the thunderbolts dealing considerable damage to him. With a final bark Bolt concluded her attack. The aftermath, for Mitsuzo-kun at least, was not pretty. Karl lay prone on the ground, his skin black in places and peeling away. He was still contorted in that ridiculous position – it still looked incredibly painful. The Kecleon was in immense pain, and was feeling pretty damn despondent. All he and Mitsuzo-kun could cling on to for hope was the prospect that things could only get better from now on. Surely?

Karl lay motionless upon the ground. His trainer, Mitsuzo-kun, simply looked on with a dejected expression, hoping his Pokémon would be able to continue battling. The Kecleon gave a groan, and began to move. With a huge amount of effort the Normal-type managed to pull himself to his feet, but he was still incredibly weary. Bolt did not move, instead choosing to watch what Karl was doing. The Kecleon managed to muster a small amount of electrical charge within his body, and then concentrated it towards his midriff. In particular he had focussed the energy into the stripe that surrounded his torso, and as electrical power built up there it began to bristle and glow. Karl then loosed the electricity in a wide pulse, the electricity crackling through the air towards the still form of Bolt. The Jolteon suddenly gave a bark and a wall of light erupted outwards form her body. She had been harnessing her own energy reserves, focussing a small amount of energy into the form of a protective shield. A sphere of energy surrounded her entirely, and it met no resistance when it made contact with the pulse of electrical energy. The electricity fizzled out and dissipated into the atmosphere. Bolt allowed the wall of energy to fall, while Karl simply groaned, falling onto his rear as though he had given up.

It wasn’t long before Karl felt the familiar sense of paralysis in his body once again. His muscles contracted rapidly, and he slumped forward, his chin hitting the ground and his arms being pulled inwards around his body. He began to twitch uncontrollably – he would have cried out in pain if he could. Bolt showed no sympathy to the plight of her opponent, though, despite having been infatuated with him not so long ago. She began to focus electrical power – a force much more potent than the small-time power harnessed by Karl in his last move – around her body, building up the voltage until she could discharge it in a powerful bolt. Her haunches went up, and her spiny hairs stood on end. She then gave a bark, and discharged the energy. Bolts of electricity darted between her and Karl, striking the prone Kecleon with considerable force. This jolt managed to somehow force Karl into action, and the Normal-type screamed as yet more electricity coursed through him. He fell backwards, this time, onto his back.

Once the attack was finished he lay there in an unbearable amount of pain. However, he yet again forced himself to his feet. He swayed a little as he stood; he was so very weary. However, one thought spurred him on – the person who had helped him through months of training and hard work. Mitsuzo-kun was his raison d’ętre, essentially, and he needed his support now more than ever. His trainer gave a cry of encouragement, and he fixed his gaze on Bolt. The Jolteon was already preparing her next attack, so he would have to be quick. He ran with all his might, heading straight for his opponent, and drew back a fist. The Electric-type watched as he neared, concentrating more electrical energy around her body. Karl screamed and unleashed his attack. He slammed his fist into the side of Bolt’s head, causing the Jolteon to fall onto her side with a yelp. She lay still for a moment, then looked back at the Kecleon with a murderous look. With a roar she discharged electricity in all directions, striking Karl at close range. The Kecleon screamed, and fell to the floor, his spirit completely spent. Mitsuzo-kun ran to tend to his Pokémon, knowing the battle was over. He nursed the Normal-type’s head before recalling him for a well-earned rest. -Adam- congratulated his Pokémon, recalling Bolt with a smile. The two trainers came together and shook hands, praising each other for their efforts. They turned and parted, on their way to further adventures.
