Bagon: I want you to start off with a nice, wholesome Wish. Wish for you getting wings or something. Then, I want you to use Belly Drum, and fend off the Ice Beam bravely. Finally, go in for a Shadow Claw, and dig in nice and hard and make it hurt a lot!

Prebattle

The two trainers approached from different directions, slowly walking towards each other across the endless expanse of meadow. As they neared they recognised each other as Stinky and iReign – of course they did; they’d arranged the battle only a few days ago. Having followed the GPRS coordinates on their PokéGears they’d arrived at the predesignated battlefield, and were ready for a showdown. They each stopped with about fifteen metres between them. Stinky nodded politely to his foe, and iReign plucked a Poké Ball from his belt. He threw it into the air with a shout, and it split horizontally, the release mechanism having activated. A white light shot out and zigzagged towards the ground, morphing into the shape of a Bagon. TheTacoMonster, henceforth referred to as Taco, gave a cry that was probably intended to be intimidating, but was instead rather nonthreatening. Stinky laughed and released his own Pokémon, a Starmie nicknamed Patrick Star. It gave a harsh, seemingly-synthetic cry that sounded entirely otherworldly. The trainers gave their orders to their Pokémon, and the battle began.

Moves: Wish ~ Belly Drum ~ Shadow Claw

Patrick was the first of the Pokémon to move. The rear-facing star on its back began to rotate, slowly at first but increasing in speed. Taco watched curiously as he dwelled upon what he’d been ordered to do. Wish? Wish for what? He’d always wished he could fly like those of his kind who are fully evolved, for sure. He’d just stick to wishing for that, for now, but in the meantime Patrick jumped into the air. It flipped back so that the jewel upon its face was facing up to the cloudless sky, and in the same moment it began to spin at an unbelievable velocity. The Starmie began to spin in a fairly wide circle, looking like a cross between a spinning top and a Frisbee. Its form became but a blur to the trainers and to Taco, who continued to sit and look up at the sky and wish he could soar through the skies like a Salamence… However Patrick suddenly stopped and jumped down to the ground. Or, rather, four Patricks jumped down to the ground. Taco gawped at them; the Bagon was not looking forward to the prospect of fighting four Starmie. Each gave an identical, eerie battle cry and flexed their arms a little. Taco got up with a sigh, figuring that he’d have to battle now.

He didn’t have too much time to do anything, however, as the Starmie immediately began to move in unison. They began to rise into the air, a couple of feet above Taco’s head, and then began to circle one spot. They came closer and closer to the Bagon until they were directly overhead, and they then lowered themselves so that they were level with the Dragon-type Pokémon. Taco watched, feeling dizzy by the constant circling, as the gems in the centre of the Starmie’s bodies began to pulse with an icy blue colour; he still had no idea what was going on. The Patricks spun around Taco faster and faster until they suddenly fired a bright blue beam from their gems, aimed straight at the Bagon! Taco cried out in pain as freezing cold power struck him seemingly from all sides. The reason for the spinning was, of course, to mask the fact that only one of the beams being fired was composed of ice – the others were but illusions. A thin sheen of ice covered the whole of Taco’s torso, restricting any attempts to move his arms. However, the Dragon-type broke through the ice quite easily, allowing it to fall to the floor harmlessly. The four Starmie slowed and came to a halt, surrounding Taco on all sides. He gave a cry to herald his next move and… Wait, what was it he had to do again? Belly Drum? He’d never even heard of the move, let alone seen it performed. He gave a whimper and fell back onto his rear, annoyed that he didn’t know what to do.

The Starmie gave no heed to this, and began their next move. It turned out to be a repeat of their prior move, and they rose into the air and circled Taco at a high speed. The Bagon gave a cry and bolted up with a start. He began to run straight ahead, trying to break through the wall that enclosed him, but the Water-type Pokémon moved itself and its clones in unison with the Dragon-type, not allowing it to escape – they had a far greater speed advantage. Taco gave up with a cry and braced himself for the assault that was to come. Patrick’s gem glowed bright blue once again, and out came four more beams of energy. They struck Taco once again, and he cried out in severe pain. The ice froze over his entire body this time, from head to toe. The Starmie halted their assault and lowered themselves to the ground. For a moment, nothing happened. Taco remained encased in ice until… CRACK. The ice began to split down the middle, and with a shriek the Bagon broke out of his icy coffin. He had a look of pure malice in his eyes, and ran blindly straight ahead, aiming for one of the Starmie. He held his right arm behind him, and a dark aura surrounded his claws. He leapt into the air and brought his arm down on… nothing. He sailed straight through the clone and struck the ground with a thump. His claws were firmly embedded into the soil, and he pulled on his arm in an attempt to dislodge himself. With a cry he managed it, and he looked up. Three Starmie remained – they had repositioned so that they still covered all angles. He gave a harrumph and awaited his orders.

Referee’s Notes

-I checked five online Pokédexes, none of which said that Bagon could learn Wish or Belly Drum. Wish would have been banned due to the conditions of the battle anyway. Half the energy that would have been expended was deducted.
-Ice Beam’s effect rolls were 80 and 77, with anything from 1-10 resulting in the target becoming frozen.
-Shadow Claw’s accuracy roll was 40, with anything from 1-25 resulting in the attack hitting.

Patrick began to rotate around Taco again. It and the two remaining clones rose into the air and circled the Bagon, rapidly increasing in velocity. The gem in their centres began to pulse with a bright blue light, one with which Taco was very familiar by now. The pulse slowed to a persistent glow, while Patrick’s movements became faster and faster. Once they were little more than a blur, the attack began. Three identical beams of ice were fired towards Taco, who had braced himself for another world of hurt. He screamed as the searing cold cut through him, and he fell to the ground as ice formed over him. This assault was a lot longer in duration than the Ice Beams that had come before it, however. Patrick had been ordered to use it three times, so it had figured why not use them all at once? A huge mound of ice began to completely encase Taco, and his screams could no longer be heard. It grew in size, the weight of it beginning to crush his body somewhat. The ice continued to mount, until it was something like three feet in height, and a good six feet in diameter on the ground. Eventually the attack stopped, and the Starmie slowed to a halt. They dropped to the ground, surrounding the mass of ice. The sun was beating down heavily by now, so it wasn’t long before the ice began to melt. It also meant it began to weaken, and cracks began to appear on its surface. There was a little movement from within, and Taco suddenly burst from within like the clichéd parasitic alien bursting from its host’s stomach.

He looked round at the three Starmie that faced him with a look of pure malevolence. Taco picked his target, the Starmie just to his left, and ran straight at him. He opened his mouth to reveal a set of vicious teeth, to which he began to channel dark energy. His jaws became the colour of night, and he leapt at the Starmie… but hit nothing. The clone faded away into nothingness, and Taco swung round swiftly. He was still a beacon of hatred, and Taco began to channel this hatred towards his claws. He limbered up a little, his muscles tightened by the sheer chill he had been suspected to. He then ran screaming at one of the remaining Starmie, bringing his right arm back in readiness to strike. He jumped and swiped at the Water-type and… hit nothing once again! He managed to break his fall before becoming stuck in the ground again, and jumped round to face the final Starmie. If it had had a mouth then it would have gulped in anticipation – Taco meant business. He ran screaming at the final Patrick, and for the first time in the battle hit something solid with his attack. He tore into the Water-type’s body with his claws, still imbued with a ghostly energy. The Starmie gave a peculiar cry as the energy was dispersed among its body. Its gem rapidly switched colours as Patrick cried out in pain, but eventually Taco leapt away from his foe. Both Pokémon waited for their next orders, Taco finally glad to have made a mark but really feeling the effects of repeated assaults, and Patrick still very confident.

Patrick had received identical orders for this round to the last. It was becoming rather bored of this, but its trainer would know best. After all, it was winning, and winning well. Instead of a showy display wherein it would circle Taco – it was unnecessary now Patrick had no clones left – the Starmie stayed rooted to the spot. It channelled energy towards its gem, pooling the reserves it had into this small area. The jewel began to pulse with an icy blue colour, and Taco and his trainer groaned, knowing what was coming. The Bagon began to channel more ethereal energies towards his right paw, trying to rush the move and attack before Patrick could fire another Ice Beam. It was in vain, however, as the Starmie’s gem was glowing constantly with the bright blue light, and from it came another huge beam of energy aimed at Taco. This was like its attack from the last round, wherein three Ice Beams had been merged into one, and the Bagon was struck with huge force. He screamed as he was knocked back and ice began to form over his body. The ice seemed to form much quicker this time, and Taco was unable to move within a matter of seconds. The ice continued to build, forming another small mound over the Dragon-type. The cold seared through him, and he began to lose consciousness in there. Finally Patrick’s assault concluded, and it stood triumphantly in front of its trainer. The ice began to crack soon enough, but Taco did not spring from within this time. iReign ran towards his Pokémon, and began to claw away at the mound. The punishing sun high above helped him in his work, and eventually he had gotten his way through to Taco. He saw there was no movement from within, and cursed out loud. He retrieved the Bagon’s Poké Ball and aimed the recall beam through the gap he had created. The Dragon-type’s form was enveloped in red light, and it immediately began to be dragged back into the sphere. iReign replaced the Poké Ball and reached for another. This wasn’t over yet.

iReign stood up and expanded the Poké Ball so that it filled his hand. With a shout he threw it high into the air, and from it came a mass of white light that morphed into the shape of a Scyther. IDAREYOUTOTRYIT!, henceforth known as Dare, gave a menacing hiss at Patrick, and swished her scythes through the air as a show of power. Orders were given, and it was the Starmie who moved first. Energies were once again channelled to its core, but this time it pulsed with a yellow light that somewhat betrayed the nature of its attack. The Water-type’s gem glowed bright with the energy, and it was released in one go. A great bolt of electricity was discharged from it, looping high into the sky in an arc. The bolt turned and headed downwards, straight at Dare! The Scyther braced herself for the impact, and she was struck full on by the bolt. She screamed as a huge amount of electricity passed through her, frying her skin and causing her muscles to spasm uncontrollably. She fell to the ground, but struggled to her feet once the attack was over. Her skin was singed slightly, and she had a malicious demeanour about her. She jumped a few inches off her feet and began to hover, her wings easily supporting her. She then began her first move, circling Patrick in much the same way it had circled Taco earlier. She quickly got up to a massive speed, becoming nothing but a blur of green and white. Four distinct images could be made out in the haze, and she suddenly brought herself to a halt. Four Scyther surrounded Patrick, turning the tables on the Starmie.

Patrick was unfazed, however. It had been ordered to perform the same move, but now it had limited space. It shifted all of its weight onto one ‘foot’, and suddenly began to spin on it. It too gained speed, and after a small amount of time looked like a peculiar, purple spinning-top. The Starmie then split into four distinct entities, each spinning at the same speed and aligned with the four Scyther that surrounded them. Patrick suddenly brought the spinning to a halt, and four Starmie now faced the four Scyther. Dare wasn’t daunted by this, however. In fact, she laughed, and simply began her next move. Each of the Scyther began to move their scythes around rapidly in a small area in front of them, creating some sort of localised wind current. The winds grew and grew in power, until each was fired off to the left of the Pokémon that had crated them. Wind rushed around the Starmie, creating a sort of tornado effect, before closing in on them and eradicating each and every clone, along with striking the real one. It gave a small noise of discontent – the damage it had suffered was not particularly great – as the winds died down.

Patrick looked at each of the Scyther in turn, trying to pick his target. It faced the one directly in front of iReign, and then began to charge electricity within its core. Dare smirked and taunted her foe – was she happy that it was facing the wrong one, or bluffing in an attempt to shift the attack onto a clone? Patrick’s gem pulsed with the same yellow light as energy was pooled to that one point, until the pulse turned to a constant glow. Sparks began to dance around the outside of the core, and the Starmie looked ready to fire at the Scyther in front of it… until it suddenly spun ninety degrees to its right and loosed thin bolts of electricity at that Pokémon! The bolts neared and… Dare cried out in pain as her skin was singed and electricity was pumped through her body once again. Her clones clutched at their chests in pain, mimicking Dare’s movements, before fading into nothingness, the illusion seen through. The Bug-type immediately took to the air as soon as the attack concluded, and flew at Patrick, her arms brought behind her body in readiness to strike. She neared it and brought each scythe down on the Water-type, making a cut in the shape of the letter X on its body. It gave an otherworldly cry as the attack hit, and Dare hopped over to where her trainer was. Patrick returned to its position in front of its trainer and awaited its orders.

Patrick was once again the first of the two Pokémon to move. It began to channel electrical energy towards its core, not at all unlike most of his previous attacks. However, very little energy was actually being used in this attack – just enough to give Dare a bit of a jolt. Its gem began to throb with yellow light, and all of a sudden from it came a pulse of electrical energy that spread outwards. It was aimed squarely at the Scyther, however, and she could do little to escape its arcing path. The small shock she got wasn’t enough to damage her, but she could feel her muscles tightening up more and more by the second. She dropped to the ground, just about managing to stay on her feet, but she could tell that flying would be near-impossible for the moment. Nevertheless she began her next attack, dropping to the ground and hacking away at the ground for a moment. Earth and soil began to build up into a small mound in front of her, and she expertly shaped it into an exact scale replica of herself. Everything was a facsimile of her, down to the scythes and wings. She then placed the tip of her scythe upon the doll’s head and began to shudder quite violently. Her very lifeforce was coursing through her, towards her arm, and she began to transfer some of this essence into her replica. Unbelievably it began to grow in size and take on colour, until it was the exact double of Dare. For the briefest of moments two Scyther stood before Patrick, until the real one suddenly disappeared. The Starmie was not to know this, of course, and prepared his next attack.

Once more it transferred electrical energy towards its core, causing it to flash yellow as a massive amount of power built up. Sparks came from it as the voltage grew, hopping about Patrick’s skin, and eventually he began to discharge this energy. Its whole body was thrown backwards as another huge bolt of electricity was fired up into the sky. The bolt went up and up, until it arced round and headed for Dare’s substitute! She braced herself, waiting for the hit… But it never came. The bolt’s course had not stayed true, and it had struck the ground at a spot around three metres to the Scyther’s right. She breathed a sigh of relief while Stinky cursed aloud. As the bolt dissipated, leaving the ground where it had hit blackened, Dare’s substitute ran at Patrick, seizing the moment. Her muscles just about managed the run, having been tightened considerably by paralysis, and she threw her arms back in preparation. The substitute reached the Starmie and brought both scythes down on it in the telltale X shape, being sure to hit the same area as before to inflict maximum pain. Patrick fell back and made a horrific noise, but Dare did not run back to take up her position in front of iReign.

She stood over Patrick, gloating for a brief moment, until she noticed that the Water-type had already begun its next move. Its core glowed bright yellow once again, the Starmie becoming more and more adept at the control of lightning as the battle progressed. The replica tried to run, but it had to be now of all moments that paralysis struck. Bolts of electricity came from Patrick’s core and discharged onto the nearest conductive object – Dare the Scyther’s subtistute. The substitute screamed in pain and dropped to the ground. It was not beaten yet, but its exterior became noticeably more blackened than one might have expected from that sort of attack. Dare’s substitute struggled up, and seeing Patrick right by her attacked again. She flung her arms back and brought the scythes down upon the Starmie’s body once again, in the same motion as her previous attack. The Water-type fell once again, its core flashing all sorts of colours as it cried out in pain. Dare’s substitute paced back to her trainer, awaiting her orders.

Patrick was getting very, very tired; almost as tired as Get Innocuous was of describing energy being directed towards the Starmie’s core, but not quite. Alas, the Water-type once again began to charge electricity within its body and direct it towards its core. The gem glowed and pulsed yellow as the power built, but Dare’s substitute remained steadfast. Sparks began to appear on the surface of the jewel, and suddenly Patrick discharged it into the atmosphere. Several thin bolts of electricity zigzagged towards the Scyther and struck her body with a crack. The earth and soil that made up the substitute’s body was now entirely black from the electricity, but it just about stayed intact. The blackened Scyther gloated, and began to perform a peculiar ritual not unlike some sort of haka, as performed by the Māori people. She flexed her muscles and brandished her scythes, pumping herself up for the rest of the battle. She sharpened her blades against each other, and ended with a roar, flinging her arms outwards and upwards in a climax. She resumed her position, and faced Patrick, ready to cause that damned Starmie some serious hurt.

Her confidence was short-lived, however. Patrick began to focus energy towards his core for what Get Innocuous hoped was the last time, the jewel pulsing with a yellow, electrically-sourced light. The voltage was built up once again, though Patrick was by now really struggling to even stay upright, let alone charge a vast amount of electricity and concentrate it on a small area. However, the gem glowed yellow triumphantly, and Patrick fired several more bolts of electricity at Dare’s substitute. Instead of screaming, however, the substitute exploded into countless pieces, landing all over the arena and throwing up a think veil of smoke around Dare’s side of the arena. The haze cleared eventually, and standing there was the real Dare! The burnt exterior of her substitute was gone – this was undoubtedly the real thing. She flew straight at the fatigued Starmie ad swiped viciously at it with her scythes. She made the familiar X mark on the Water-type’s body, and it made a sickening, ethereal noise as it fell to the ground and writhed about. Dare hopped back over to her trainer, ready to face Patrick’s next attack.

The Starmie struggled up onto its feet, and began its next move. For once, it didn’t involve focussing energy! Instead, it used its mental prowess to scan the arena before it, without even having to look through the gem that served as its sole sensory organ. Patrick transferred powerful psychic waves through the airwaves, and Dare suddenly became enveloped in a bright blue aura. She was lifted off of the ground and she gave a yelp, her movements being dictated by her opponent. She was lifted to a height of approximately ten metres, when suddenly she was brought down with a sickening crunch at a hugely fast speed. She cried out in pain, and looked up at the Starmie from her position on the ground. She was gonna hurt it so bad… She got up and flew right at Patrick, once again flinging her arms back in readiness. She reached it and brought her scythes down with a woosh. She sliced across its body, and it fell to the floor once again. Dare returned to her trainer, while Patrick strained to pick itself up from off the ground.

Patrick would have sighed if it had had a mouth. It was so very tired, and with no let up yet. This round was to be its glory blaze, as it were; it would go out with a bang! It began its next attack, summoning the vast reserves of water that Water-type Pokémon could instantly create should the situation demand it. It pointed the top arm of its front star at Dare, and fired a stream of salty water straight at the Scyther. However, the Bug-type had been prepared for this. From her body erupted a wall of light that surrounded her on all sides, forming a spherical barrier against whatever might come her way. The water simply poured down the side, while Dare gloated from within her protective cocoon of energy. Patrick felt disheartened, and abruptly halted the attack. The barrier was allowed to drop, its light dissipating into the atmosphere around Dare and the water that had struck it quickly evaporating under the hot sun.

Patrick tried again. It fired the same stream of brine at Dare, but felt itself losing consciousness. The light in its jewel began to flicker in the death throes, but the Starmie was determined to finish its attack. Dare braced herself; the water was freezing cold, and the salt in it stung her wounds. She cried out in pain as it struck, but could just about see that Patrick was falling to the ground. She laughed an evil laugh as the stream of water died away, and began her victory dance. She sharpened her scythes again and danced a war dance, pumping herself up even more and increasing her attacking potential. Stinky ran over to his fallen Pokémon and recalled the poor, tired Starmie – it had fainted purely from exhaustion. Stinky replaced its Poké Ball and reached for another…

Stinky took a Poké Ball in his hand and expanded it to fill his grasp. He opened the ball while it was still in his hand, aiming the opening towards the ground. A small Torchic, nicknamed KFC, appeared with a squawk. She was facing a much larger opponent, but one who had been worn down considerably by her predecessor. It was Dare the Scyther who moved first. She began to perform another dance of some sort, but this was a lot different to her Swords Dance attack. This time, she continuously looked up to the sky as she danced, pointing her scythes skyward, until suddenly the blades began to glow with a dark blue light. This was quite unlike the icy glow that had been seen on Patrick’s core, and was imbued with Water-type energy. Suddenly with a shout she pointed the two scythes directly upwards, and a powerful beam of energy was loosed towards the sky. The energy began to dissipate as it headed upwards, forming into the shapes of clouds. A few spots of rain began to fall on the field, and KFC shivered. She would have to be quick. She began to focus some of the thermal energy within her, and the small, stumpy wings on either side of her torso began to glow bright white. With a shout, she released a similar beam of energy skywards, though this charged with Fire-type energy. It shot straight through the clouds overhead, and they disappeared almost instantly, replaced by even harsher sunlight than before. iReign and Dare gave a sign in unison, but they pressed on.

Dare began to fly at the small Torchic that she faced, but darted this way and that as she went. She neared her, and suddenly swiped to her left. KFC dodged it with ease, but the Scyther suddenly struck her to the right while she was at unawares! The Fire-type Pokémon cried out, the blades cutting into her skin. She hopped to the ground, livid at her foe, and began to stoke up the fire that burned with her. She inhaled a great breath of air, and then exhaled a great torrent of fire straight at Dare, who had only just gotten away from her foe. She cried out in pain as the flames smothered her and burnt her skin, the blaze quickly overwhelming her. She dropped to the ground and tried in desperation to put it out by rolling on the ground. She continued to scream, but eventually the flames died and she managed to return to her previous position. She glowered at her small foe, but knew in her heart that she was on her way out.

So, Dare attacked again, for what she knew would almost certainly be the last time in this battle. She flew this way and that, approaching KFC with fervour, and brought her scythes back. She neared the Torchic and brought her left scythe across – the Fire-type dodged it – and then her right scythe – which KFC also dodged. However, she then brought the left scythe back across and struck the Torchic right on the chin. The Fire-type fell to the floor with a cry of pain, while Dare flitted back over to her trainer, acceptant of her fate. KFC hopped back onto her feet with a little difficulty, and gave as malicious a smirk as she could muster towards the Scyther. She breathed in, fuelling the flame sac that resided within her body, before firing another stream of flame towards Dare. The Bug-type screamed and instantly fell to the ground with a thud. The inferno raged on her limp body, and she passed out of consciousness. As the flames died, KFC gave a contented chirp, while iReign ran to tend to his fallen partner. He tried to awaken her, but his head dropped when he realised she was out cold. He recalled his Pokémon, and stood up. Stinky withdrew KFC and offered his hand. The two shook hands and congratulated each other. They walked away wordlessly, on their way to more battles.
