Come out Grifter (Croconaw, M)

So, uh, let's start off strong with an Aerial Ace. Then set up a Substitute. If the Substitute isn't destroyed yet, Surf, otherwise, do another Aerial Ace.

All right Proeliator, Take the first Aerial Ace and return the favor with Counter! Next use Thunderpunch to deal a blow of your own, and then Sunny Day to decrease the power of his Surf attack!

Prebattle

The crowd roared into life as the two figures appeared on their respective platforms. There was a time and place for grand introductions. The start of a group stage match in the Gym Leader Tournament was not one of them. No mind games, no smart comments. Just raw battling was what awaited our competitors.

Shrugging at the slightly boring build-up to the battle, Elbub put his hands on his hips, to glance at both of the battlers. Boringly enough, they were merely starting straight ahead, fists clenched by their sides, shouting out the moves and actions to their partners in battle. Amateurs; he would show them how it was done when he got his chance. Helicopters and explosions filled the mind of the young man.

Taking a swig from a hipflask which contained a rather dubious liquid, Elbub flicked on the microphone. The result was an instantaneous screech across the PA system which caused all the supporters to flinch and grasp there ears in pain. Smiling grimly, Elbub began to speak;

"Apologies, but the battle of Group C of the Gym Leader Tournament between Khajmer and Silly Wanker is about commence. Are the battlers ready?"

Two nods came in his direction from the stock still competitors. Elbub shook his head again; where was their sense of style and sophistication? "Well," he supposed "they will learn someday how to treat these events." To add a bit of spice to the start, the referee chose a pause for dramatic effect. Then-

"Let the battle commence!"

Acting faster than his opponenet, although the speed difference was not great at all, Proeliator began to act by first-guessing his opponents actions. Summoning up months of training, he forced the energy through his body and onto the surface, where it bubbled with the same colour and viscosity of lava. If he was the target of any sort of dangerous physical attack, he would make sure that Grifter felt the damage and felt the damage hard.

Moving just as fast as his opponent had done and with a grunt and a toss of a head, Grifter quickly dived off his platform into the depths of the water. He was happy in his element and was going to make the little fighting Pokemon pay. Moving through the water at greater speeds than he could have managed on land, his appearance was close to that of a blur. Confused, Proeliator nearly let his aura drop. But, remembering his training in time, kept the aura around his body, ready to take the forthcoming attack. And there it came, quick as a flash, Grifter leapt out of the water towards Proeliator and slashed towards him with an open claw. It ripped through the red aura and into the skin of the fighting Pokemon.

In a flash and before Proeliator could even yell in pain, the red aura spread to the spot of the damage, absorbing all the pain and energy. Whipping around to face Grifter, who had skidded to a halt, splashing water all over the wobbling platform, he slammed his fist into the side of the crocodile. Squawking in pain, Grifter felt the energy from the red aura ripple through his body, with more damage than his attack had done.

Acting fast again, Proeliator began to channel a small source of electrical energy into his fist. Eyes widening in fear, Grifter could only watch miserably as the charged fist slammed into his jaw this time. As it connected, the electricity flowed from Proeliator's fist and straight into the water type. And it stung. Worst of all, the electricity on his body allowed the electricity to ripple across his skin faster than it should normally. This caused the highly unfortunate effect of a slightly lockdown in Grifter's muscles.

The severe tensing was momentarily crippling for Grifter. He was for a second convinced he wasn't going to be able to move. Mercifully, the paralysis dropped slightly so that Grifter could perform his attack whilst Proeliator jumped back into position. Allowing a bright white energy to spill from his forehead, it began to take on the form of a clone of him; prone and slightly dishevelled as he was. With a final flick of a claw as the white light began to fade, the clone sprung into life. Unlike it's creator, it jumped to his feet, ready to protect Grifter at the cost of its own form.

Grunting in a way that suggested indifference to the action of Grifter, Proeliator turned his back on both crocodile and clone, and looked forward to the slightly cloudy sky. Closing his eyes, he began to chant in a very rhythmic way. Before long, he began to sway from side to side with just his upper body. Then his lower body. Then he was moving his feet as well. Before long, a very eccentric ritual dance was being performed by Proeliator, whilst the chanting continued. The poncho-clad supporters in the front-most rows began to laugh at this action.

Unfortunately for them, the effect of this strange dance began to take place. The few clouds that had littered the sky began to dissipate as the sun itself seemed to come closer to the earth and shine with much more intensity. The effect on the crowd was instantaneous; the poncho's and coats used to protect from water splashing were flung back to the seats and bottles of sun lotion began to appear from nowhere. The effect on the competitors was less noticeable. The prone Grifter began to dry from it's earlier dive and both Pokemon began to feel dry around the mouth. A haze of evaporation began to rise slowly from the pool of water, although not enough to be worrying.

Grifter, on the other hand, was intensely worried. Not only was the sun bad for him, as a water-based creature, his paralysis had unfortunately locked down his muscles so intensely that he couldn't move. He could only watch in frustration as Proeliator stopped his ritual dance, turned to him and smiled widely. It was obvious to everyone in the arena, and no creatures more than the Pokemon themselves, who was on top of the battle.

Arena Notes
- It is very sunny. (15 more actions)
- The arena is, by and large, intact. A slight haze of evaporation is working it's way skyward, although not enough to cause any sort of changes to the field of play or the Pokemon on it.

Referee Notes
- Proeliator; Counter (11% damage, -6% energy), ThunderPunch (5% damage, -5% energy), Sunny Day (-4% energy)
- Grifter; Aerial Ace (6% damage, -5% energy), Substitute (-25% health, -6% energy)
- If you're wondering why 6% and 11% for the first couple of moves, it's because of the stage difference.
- Paralysis roll for Thunderpunch was 4, with anything from 1-10 paralysing Grifter. Ouch for the unluckiness.
- Paralysis rolls for Grifter were 51 and 28, with anything from 1-50 resulting in the inability to move.
- Stock-substitute health requirement is 25%.
- Five rounds of altered weather are you in for. Unless it changes, it will last longer than the battle itself.
- Khajmer, your attacks first please.

What took Elbub?
I'm joking; I know you have more important stuff to do.

So, Grifter isn't doing too well right now.
Uh...
How about doing a Rain Dance to dispose of the intense weather. Then do a Swords Dance. And follow up with a Hydro Pump.

Rain Dance ~ Swords Dance ~ Hydro Pump

And I'm gone.

My procrastination and life took a toll on my activity and my general ability to be able to bother to ref. This round took me about an hour to do, that's how quickly I can get something of Elite standard done. And that was when I was multi-tasking as well.

Anyway, the next round of this should be up later today, after I referee the other battle in this group. Lets get this tournament back on schedule.

Proeliator listened to his partners in a slightly haughty manner. Being the fighting Pokemon that he was, he want to dive straight in at the already weakened Grifter and start pummelling away at the water-type who had taken his size into account before considering the ability of him. But, orders were orders; he had to follow them through. Summoning a deep wealth of energy that still remained inside of him, he began to allow this energy to flow from the centre of his head onto the slightly wobbling platform. The light intensity caused Grifter and the crowd to shield their eyes from the excess energy being give off. By the time their gaze returned to Proeliator, there were two Riolu standing facing the two Croconaw's. For now, both Pokemon had their own protector, ready to sacrifice their life to protect their creator.

Groaning slightly as he pulled himself to his feet, Grifter tried out his muscles slightly by flexing his short legs. It seemed that for the time being he had some mobility in regards to the battle. Good; time to do something about the weather then. Looking up at the intense sunshine that beamed down on the arena, Grifter closed his eyes and began to murmur ancient rites, much like Proeliator had done. Unfortunately for Grifter, considering the current weather conditions, the move he was trying to perform would be so much harder than it would be without the sun.

The first dark clouds had started to appear in the sky as Grifters murmuring when the referee began to realise what was happening. Producing a two Pokeballs from his belt, he flicked them towards his podium, releasing Yin, his Poliwag, and Magnifique, his Kirlia. Yin jumped down off the podium and into the water, as far away from the battle as possible, where it began to frolic in the water and the newly changing weather. Magnifique, however, produced a shimmering shield, which hovered above her trainer, protecting him from whatever was coming.

And yet, still, the audience did not catch on. They would soon regret discarding the poncho's and raincoats as the dark clouds began to obscure the ever powerful sun. Within moments, the heaven's opened, bombarding the arena and stadium with thick droplets of water. A scramble took place in the stadium as poncho's were recovered and raincoats flung on, but it was too late. The majority of unprotected people had already got soaked, for the rain had come down thick and fast. Grifter opened his eyes and a small smile played around his jaw. The rain revitalised his cracked skin and made him feel much more at home in the arena. He started to feel that perhaps this battle could be turned around.

Feeling slightly annoyed that his opponent had the weather advantage now, Proeliator decided that the best thing to do was to even out the odds a little. Despite the slipperiness of the freshly wet platform, Proeliator began to leap into the air, slamming his legs and arms into the floor very hard each time he came down. As each leap and landing came and went, his muscles began to tense more and more. Strangely enough to both the audience and Proeliator, Grifter began to copy his every move, leaping into the air and landing with impressive force. The platform began to wobble dangerously as the came down, although because they did it on opposite sides, this tended to prevent it from toppling over. The strange dance continued for nearly thirty seconds before, eventually, after many leaps into the air, Proeliator straightened up again. His muscles were much more toned than before, negating the stage difference between the two and then some. He was ready to deal the damage on Proeliator. Unfortunately, Grifter also stopped the dance soon after, and the effect was identical; his already impressive attack was raised, adding additional firepower to his already powerful attacks.

Interested to see what would happen this time, Proeliator began to start the dance up again. In an almost goading way, he started intently at his opponent. He was wondering if Grifter would again copy his lead and began the strange ritual dance. Grifter certainly seemed to be preparing his body for something. Grifters eyes did indeed follow the movement of Proeliator in the dance, but after about fifteen seconds of the dance, he seemed to choose on a different attack.

Still keeping his eyes on the leaping Riolu, as the platform shook with each landing, Grifter began to fill his mouth with water from inside his body. Keeping his jaw clenched shut, the pressure began to build inside his mouth at the same time the water began to fill it. Before long, Grifter's cheeks had ballooned out, filled with highly pressurised water. Only one way it could go, without causing damage to Grifter himself. Unfortunately, as he opened his mouth, and the jet of extremely pressurised water flew from it, Proeliator landed harder than normal on the platform. Combined with the water on the platform, he slipped and fell to the surface of it, although with his muscles even more tensed than before. The substitute, keen to follow his master, also fell to the floor. This had the effect of the water passing straight over the top of both of the Riolu's heads, meaning no damage was inflicted to anything. Gasping for breath after the attack, Grifter looked frustrated again. By sheer fluke, Proeliator and his substitute remained intact.

Arena Notes
- It is raining very hard. (13 more actions)
- The platforms are very slippery, and the water level is slowly rising, all though not noticeable. A Poliwag is frolicking in the water on the far east side, but will be instantly recalled if the battle comes too close to it.

Referee Notes
- Proeliator; Substitute (-20% health, -5% energy), Swords Dance (-3% energy), Swords Dance (-3% energy)
- Grifter; Rain Dance (-6% energy), Swords Dance (-3% energy), Hydro Pump (-5% energy)
- Paralysis rolls for Grifter were 45, 32 and 82, with anything from 1-25 resulting in an inability to move.
- Because we went from intense sunshine to pouring rain, I've added an extra energy penalty for the Rain Dance, as it was much harder to summon the clouds considering the conditions.
- Hydro Pumps accuracy roll was 100, with anything from 1-80 hitting the substitute. The RNG continues to be cruel to you, SW.
- Silly Wanker, your attacks first please. You can't catch a break, can you?

I can't catch a break can I?
Something fishy's going on here...
By the way Elbub, who's the guy in your avatar?

Grifter isn't doing so hot.
At least it's raining though...
So, here's the game plan:
Grifter is going to do a Brick Break.
Follow that up with a Blizzard.
And end your attacks with an Ice Beam.

Though Ice pokemon are weak against Fighting attacks, Ice attacks shouldn't have any problem damaging Fighting pokemon.

Proeliator, time to take advantage of that Substitute. Have it take the blows while you smash his with a Focus Punch, and then another. If you've broken his Substitute by then, hit him with Toxic, otherwise just smash his face in with more Focus Punching.

Scrambling to his feet in order to pull off his next attack, Proeliator glared across at his opponent. How dare that stupid crocodile make him look the fool by slipping over? Without even thinking of his attack, his hand was already beginning to form a fist. With a sudden recollection of his orders, a smug grin spread across his face. He was going to enjoy the assault on Grifter. Raising his fist to his head, it began to glow a dull but pulsating orange which absorbed most of his upper arm with energy and power.

Looking cautiously at the raised fist, Grifter decided that it was best if he took the initiative sooner rather than later. Moving quickly towards Proeliator, Grifter raised his own fists in attack. However, a split second later, Grifter realised the pointlessness of aiming for his adversary; the substitute was already moving into his way. Rather than aiming his punch at Proeliator, he aimed for the already jumping substitute. Taking the clone by surprise, he slammed his fist into its side, flinging it across the platform where it skidded worryingly close to the edge.

Enraged at the direct assault on his clone rather than a failed attempt at him, Proeliator jumped at Grifter, whose eyes were elsewhere, smiling evilly at the injured clone. The smile didn’t last long, as the fist slammed into his own clone with a great force. A punch of that power would normally break a fist, but the orange aura seemed to absorb the recoil and force it into even more damage against the substitute.

Watching the reeling Croconaw’s substitute slide to a similar place as his own, Proeliator realised the advantage he now had. His assaults would be uninterrupted as his clone took all the damage for him. Keeping the thought that his trainer had undoubtedly thought this through already away, he began his second assault by once more raising his fist to eye level and allowing the energy flow through it and appear as the orange aura once more.

Hoping that he could capitalise in the break in assaults, Grifter hoped to form the icy maelstrom in his mouth with which he could destroy the substitute, or come close to anyway. But he couldn’t. The crippling paralysis once again took over his muscles, locking them in place. “It can’t get any worse than this” was the thought that ran through Grifter’s head. How wrong he was; the fist of Proeliator was about to unleash a whole new force of energy onto his substitute. The clone jumped in front of its creator at the last second, taking the brunt of the hit and was obliterated completely from the arena. However, the remaining energy that didn’t affect the clone, although not strong enough to damage Grifter, was enough to force him backwards slightly, where he slid quite smoothly towards the edge of the platform.

Although the feeling was beginning to return in his muscles, Grifter was still spluttering from the destruction of his own protector. His vulnerability was all too obvious to Proeliator and, remembering his commands, spat up an indiscernible purple mixture, which landed on his opponent and began to corrode away Grifter’s skin where it landed.

Whimpering in pain, Grifter hastily rubbed the polluted patch on the platform, where the water mercifully washed most of it away. The damage was already done, however, and the poison surged into his body, damaging him slightly. Whipping his head around in order to gaze at Proeliator through narrow eyes, the hate in Grifter’s mind was already beginning to form in the material world as a small orb of icy energy in the rapidly widening jaw of the Croconaw. The orb was soon unleashed as a beam of the icy energy, slamming Proeliator’s clone in the chest and knocking it backwards into the water. Fortunately for the fighting Pokemon, his clone scrambled back onto the platform, looking worse for the wear but still ready to take another assault from Grifter. With the round coming to a close, it still looked like Proeliator had the upper hand, even if he was slightly more out of breath.

All I can say is holy crap.

Okay Pro, lead with another Focus Punch. You know it hurts him like hell. If you still have your Substitute after that do it again, because despite being repetitive it's also very effective. If not, go with a Drain Punch to recover your health! Then see if you can get lucky and hit him with a Cross Chop!

Out of interest, has anyone heard from Yah recently. I just checked his latest posts, and the most recent one was the 23rd of October...

If no one has, then I might as well disqualify him now. My main reason is that I want this tournament to progress and I need someone to win a match in order to have an ASBer of the month.

Khajmer, M-kun, your input please? What do you reckon I should call?

If it's okay for me to post here, Yah is in a clan I am in in the Battling Center, LMSSI, and iirc, he told us he was going to be gone for a while because he's studying to be a neurosurgeon, I think.

I'll delete this post if I get told I can't post here.
