Well in the original game it was any fire type but now he's steel/rock. And water also barely does anything! So i had to skip that gym and get the next gym badge aswell as getting the shiny garados. I was then able to kill it in about 4 hits. So post what was the best pokemon to beat it with

I just had my Vaporeon wipe it out with one Surf. Easy gym and easy kill >:3

The special/physical divide only means you have to use special moves on physical defense oriented Pokemon - it's not that hugely different from before.

I guess hat since i havent played g/s/c since i was um was it 8. i just forgot how to beat it. But hm i just found out that flame weal is physical so that explains that part. and i tried using surf on a poliwhirl that i caught in the safari zone but it barely done any damage. i guess the game hated me xD

Well, I used Quagsire. All Steelix does is use Iron Tail, and Quagsire resists it, so about 2-3 Surfs should kill him.

I used Quilava (yer, I didn't evolve him until level 70...) against her whole gym. Flame Wheels destroyed her Pokemon over and over XD

Like what all the previous people said, water or fire attacks will work well provided that they are coming from the special side. In addition to this, there are some other things that can help.

First is putting Steelix to sleep with Poliwhirl. The other thing you can do is stock up on X Specials/X Attacks and Potions and see if those attack boosts work. Similarly, stat-decreasing moves like Screech work very nicely as well. Finally, if none of these work, you could always gain a few more levels.

Hi Guy's,

I used Quilava and Lanturn. Her Steelix is nothing special.

I went to Mahogany a little early and got the Gyarados. Water moves pwn Steelix.

My Lanturn 2HKO'd Steelix using Surf. She was about 5-6 levels lower than Jasmine's Steelix.

So, Fire/Water moves work well (preferably Special, not physical since Steelix's got a high Defense).

If you're at the stage where Quilava/Typhlosion only has Flame Wheel, you can head upstairs in Goldenrod's department store and buy the TM for Fire Blast. It has poor accuracy and only 5 PP, so you want to save it for Steelix.

An easy way I found was to buy that and an X Accuracy. Of course, I used it on my Togetic instead of Quilava (I started with Chikorita), but same basic principle. On her last Magnemite before Steelix, I used the X Accuracy before dispensing of Magnemite with Flame Wheel. If you get paralyzed by Magnemite, try and work out healing the Pokemon before you kill the magnemite because it'll be harder to get turns in on Steelix.

X Accuracy -> Fire Blast x2 -> Dead Steelix

X Accuracy isn't even too necessary, but I used it because it seemed to make the strategy less luck-based if Fire Blast isn't like whaomg miss!

Water, Fire, or Ground will work wonders on Steelix. c:

Using Fire Blast will more than likely knock it out, same with Surf, Magnitude, or Earthquake if you happen to have it at that level.

You can catch a Drowzee on Route 34 at lv. 10 or 12, then go to Goldenrod City and trade the person on the 5th floor the Drowzee for Machop. Fighting type moves are 2x effective against all of her pokemon and with Machop it gets the STAB bonus on top of the 2x base damage.

I recommend a Water-type. My top choices - Feraligatr, Poliwrath, Politoed, Golduck, Seaking, Quagsire, Lapras, Tentacruel, Gyarados
