"A wide, deep valley at the bottom of two large hills. This valley is dozens of miles long and flanked on both sides by thick trees. There are caves in the sides of the hills and dozens of boulders and piles of stone strewn all over. The grass is knee-high here and there are hundreds of flowers. At the northern end of the valley is a large pond. Ranger Outpost Number Eight is located here."

"It's good to be back," I said, spinning in the office chair of the National Park lobby, "and fully licensed at that!"

After a long leave of absense, and a new licensing test, I had become an official Pokemon Ranger! I was excited to enter the National Park with a trainer, without having to worry about the Head Ranger watching my every move. I had arrived, and now was my time to shine! My brown hair bounced as I happily danced around the lobby, walking towards the stack of files containing young trainers ready to enter the park. I picked up the top folder, and scanned the application.

"Okay, this one will be here any minute now," I chuckled to myself, filling out the proper paperwork with the information I had reviewed.

Trainer: Alden Umster
Desired Location: Meteor Valley
Pokemon: Umbreon, Flareon, Shiftry

Eventually, the lobby doors opened, and a young man with a red beanie, and a white shirt with a red Pokeball printed on the bottom walked in.

"Alden Umster?" I asked, directing the trainer, "come with me."

I lead the trainer, as I had been instructed to, outside. I reached into the pocket of my blue jeans, pulling out a red Pokeball with a star-shaped sticker applied to the top. I tossed out the Pokeball, releasing a large grey pterodactyl with a wide wingspan and a devil-tipped tail. Aero had been my faithful companion since day one.

"Okay Alden, normally you'd have a long cart ride to your destination, but me and Aero have other ways of getting you from point A to point B," I said, climbing onto my Pokemon's back, "hop on, and hang tight."

The trainer followed suit, and we both stradled the rock-hard Pokemon. Aero flapped her wings and rose into the sky, flying in the direction I had pointed. After a minute or two of flight, our destination was clear.

"Down there Aero," I said, pointing towards a valley below.

I recalled Aero once Alden hopped off, and I landed gracefully on the sparkling earth. Meteor Valley was said to be carved out by a meteor, creating a massive crater in the ground. Trees soon grew around the crater, forming a barrier of thick foliage, which made reaching the area fairly difficult. Still, Meteor Valley was home to a surprising number of Steel and Psychic types, making it the perfect place to catch some gifted supernatural Pokemon.

"Okay Alden, you ready to go?" I asked, turning to the trainer I was responsible for escorting through this area.

Alden stood in front of the national park office, his friend, Umbreon, standing besides him. "Well, this is it!" said the trainer enthusiastically. "We are back at the national park!"

"Bre, bre" responded Umbreon, obviously trying to fake some enthusiasm into her reply. It wasn't working.

"Arn't you excited?" said the trainer, looking down incredulously at black jackal-looking pokemon that was currently standing on her four paws. She had a jet black sheen that shone brilliantly, and she came up in height slightly past her trainer's knees. Alden's Umbreon sported a unique coloration, as the stripes and rings that shone from time to time on her body glowed with a soft, azure light. Her eye color was also unique, and today, Umbreon cocked her head and stared up at her trainer with those calm, yellow eyes. Alden sighed. This was his pokemon's personality, and he had doubts as to whether he would be able to instill some more enthusiasm in her.

Alden's gaze shifted to the building before him. He remembered this exactly place, roughly a year ago when he first came to the national park. Of course, this was prior to the park's closing and reopening, but he remembered having a fun time with his Flareon and Umbreon as he explored the paths and caves surrounding Mt. Deckbi. This will be different though, thought Alden. This time, we are heading to the Meteor Valley. The trainer returned Umbreon to her poke ball, sighed nervously, then pushed opened the door and entered the building. Immediately, he was greeted.

"Alden Umster? Come with me."

The man, who Alden assumed was his ranger, led the trainer out the back. On the way, Alden learned that his ranger's name was Rusty Anderson.

Outside the back of the national park offices, Alden saw a familiar cart. He remembered riding it a year ago to the slopes of Mt. Deckbi, but to his surprise, the ranger did not walk to the cart. Instead, he pulled out a poke ball and released a grey, winged pokemon that the ranger identified as "Aero". The pokemon looked like an archaic bird almost... except far larger with a mouth full of razor sharp teeth. After racking his brain for a minute, Alden remembered coming across a pokemon like this in an article somewhere. However, that pokemon, if Alden remembered correctly, was supposed to be extinct.

Regardless, the ranger revealed to Alden that he planned to take the trainer to the Meteor Valley via pokemon rather than cart. For a second, Alden was relieved. The cart ride he had taken last year had been pretty uncomfortable. However, it then dawned on him that the ranger expected Alden to fly to the valley on the pokemon. "hop on, and hang tight," said the ranger before Alden could protest. As his stomach sunk, Alden climbed on to the rock hard pokemon, and hung on for his life as the pokemon took off.

The flight actually wasn't as bad as Alden had expected it to be. The scenary below was beautiful, and it wasn't long before meteor valley was in view. From the sky, the valley looked like a circular basin It was very lush, with thick clumps of high grass growing everywhere, while a row of trees lined the distance in front of a large mountain. As the pokemon touched down, Alden took note of all the rocks and flowers. It was like a large meadow - very much unlike what the trainer had expected. Alden had heard stories about the psychic and ghost pokemon of Meteor Valley, and hoping to train a few ghosts himself, Alden chose to visit the valley himself. However, at first glance, it didn't appear to be a home for supernatural or ghost pokemon at all. Then again, thought Alden, there is probably more to this place than meets the eye.

The ranger turned to Alden as he hopped off the flying pokemon and asked if he was ready. "Yea," replied the trainer. "One second though." Alden always enjoyed walking one or two of his pokemon by his side. It gave them a chance to excercise. "Come on out Umbreon," said Alden as he pointed the pokemon's poke ball at the ground. As the pokemon appeared, her body stiffened and the blue color in her rings faded. Her eyes looked alert as she shook her head restlessly. This was all very odd for a pokemon as laid back as Umbreon typically was. Still, Alden wasn't surprised. The valley had an "odd" feel to it, and the trainer felt as this was going to be an interesting trip. "lead the way," he said, looking at the ranger. Umbreon followed her trainer, an alert look evident in those yellow eyes.

I watched as Alden walked his Umbreon around the area, getting a feel for the terrain of the area.

"Lead the way," Alden said, looking at me eagerly.

"Oh, right!" I said, "don't want you falling down some hole somewhere."

I began walking North, with Alden and his Umbreon close behind. The two of them made me nervous, even though I had proven myself worth of the Ranger License, I was still new. After a few minutes, I realized that the terrain had remained the same the entire time. I decided it'd be better to ask the trainer what they wanted to do, rather than just blindly lead.

"What kind of Pokemon are you looking for Alden?" I stopped, turning to ask the trainer, "I know a good area where Psychic and Dark-types like to gather. But there's also this large area further North, and I've seen plenty of Steel-types there before. Which way do you wanna go?"

I stood there patiently, waiting for Alden to decide which type of Pokemon he'd rather see first.

After asking for the ranger to lead the way, Alden followed closely behind his guide. The grass was tall, with flowering plants dotting the landscape. The sun was out and the scene in general looked peaceful. However, there was definitely something eerie about the place. I guess thats what happens when a valley is inhabited by psychic types, thought Alden to himself. Umbreon trotted along at her trainer's side, staying on the lookout.

The ranger, trainer, and pokemon walked for a bit through some uniform looking terrain before stopping. Turning to Alden, the ranger asked what kind of pokemon he was looking for.

Alden stopped and thought to himself. The place was well known for its psychic and steel types, but the trainer wasn't particularly interested in catching any of those on this visit. Although he had a fondness for dark type pokemon, Alden already had two of them - his Umbreon and his Shiftry. "You know what I would really like to catch," said Alden. "I would love to go somewhere where I can find some ghost types."

Alden expressed an interest in Ghost-types, a type that also inhabited this area, though they aren't as abundant as the Psychic or Dark-types. Fortunately, I had a hunch where the Ghost-types liked to gather.

"Okay, follow me," I said, turning left.

The Ghost-types who inhabited Meteor Valley liked the dark shroud of the forest surrounding the crater. The closer we got to the edge of the valley, the more likely we were to find a spectre or two. After a few minutes of walking, I heard a faint cry.

"Espeon!" a Pokemon cried out.

"Oh, there's an Espeon somewhere near here," I said.

I glanced about, turning left and right, until I found a limber pink cat nearby. Espeon was eyeing us carefully, taking a keen interest in Alden's Umbreon.

"It's not a Ghost-type, but Espeon is pretty rare," I said, turning to Alden, "still, it's your call. What do you want to do?"

After expressing his interest in catching a ghost type pokemon, Alden followed the ranger, who had made a turn to his left and begun heading to the fringes of the valley. I guess that makes sense, thought Alden. The trees around the valley look dark and gloomy - a perfect place for ghosts to make their home. Umbreon followed behind her trainer at a steady pace. She still had an alert look in her face and Alden could tell that the eerie valley as a whole was bothering her.

It was only a few minutes walk through the tall, flowering shrubs and grasses until Alden and the ranger heard something. It sounded like a shrill, high-pitched cry to the trainer. "Espeon!"

Having two Eeveelutions himself, Alden knew how rare they were in the wild. After acknowledging that it wasn't a ghost type, the ranger went on to confirm the trainer's suspicions. The Espeon stood a good 20-30 feet away from the two of them, staring at Alden's Umbreon. Umbreon matched the stare with one of her own, her ears cocked back and a twinge of excitement in her eyes. "Well Umbreon," said Alden to his pokemon. "You want to try and catch the Espeon?"

Umbreon looked up at her trainer, nodding her head. "Bre, bre, Umbreon!"

"Alright then," said the trainer, pointing at the Espeon, who stared back cautiouslly. "Go ahead Umbreon, lets start with a Faint Attack!"

Umbreon hunched back, her azure stripes turning jet black, her yellow eyes staring intently at her target. The look in the pokemon's eyes surprised her trainer. Umbreon was typically a calm and passive pokemon, yet she looked very eager right now. Maybe its the fact that she is fighting an Espeon, thought Alden. Maybe... maybe she likes the Espeon and wants me to catch it so that they can be together? As improbable as it sounded, the thought still brought an amused smile to the trainer's face.

A split second later, Umbreon lunged forward, her stripes ablaze with an intense blue color. Mid-lunge, she faded from view, and then reappearing behind a confused Espeon. As Umbreon's black body appeared again, she twisted her body, gaining momentum, and swung her tail in a downward angle at the unsuspecting Espeon.

Espeon's eyes widened as Umbreon vanished from sight, re-appearing behind the pink cat. Before the sleek Psychic-type had a chance to react, the Moonlight Pokemon's attack nipped its rear, sending it shooting forward. Espeon let out a faint cry before rotating, landing softly on the pads of its paws. The Pokemon's quiet grace amazed me as I watched the battle. The cat let out a cry as it leapt into the air, its pronged tail swaying gently.

In mid-leap, Espeon opened its mouth as wide as she could, and fired a small volley of glimmering stars. The Swift attack was too quick and fired too suddenly to react. The volley of stars exploded on contact with Umbreon's body, scattering a stunningly amazing display of stardust. Fortunately, the damage was minimal, but Espeon used the attack as a distraction, already preparing another attack.

"This could be bad," I said, wondering how Alden would avoid the attack.

Espeon craned forward, and then channeled a massive amount of psychic energy. It then lunged forward, arcing its body towards the sky. The energy sent a thin beam straight into the sky, vanishing without any obvious threat.

"What's that all about?" I asked, still watching the sky.

Umbreon ducked her head as a shower of stars fell upon her, exploding and sending sparks of golden light in every direction. Umbreon finally lifted her head back up and shook it a bit, but by the time she had recovered, Espeon had already made its next move. Arching its body toward the sky, Espeon sent a thin beam shooting strait up into the clouds. Umbreon looked up, a perplexed look in her golden eyes. Alden looked more nervous That must be a Future Sight, thought the trainer. How is Umbreon going to avoid an attack that could come at any moment?

"Look out," shouted Alden, snapping the black pokemon's trance. Umbreon looked down, from the sky, to her trainer. "It looks like a future sight attack. You have to be on guard because you never know when exactly it is going to hit you." The pokemon nodded her head, acknowledging her trainer's advice.

Well, for now I guess there is only one thing to do, thought the trainer. "Alright Umbreon, since we likely have a little bit of time before that future sight hits, lets go on the offensive!" The tranier pointed at the Espeon, who was staring warily at Umbreon. "Use a Confuse Ray!"

Umbreon sat down on the patch of ground she was currently on and closed her eyes. The blue lines and circles on her body faded, leaving a sleak black appearance to the entirety of the pokemon's fur. After a second of what looked like intense concentration, Umbreon opened her golden eyes. Her stripes and rings blazed with a bright, intense blue, and a ray of light shot out of her eyes toward the Espeon. The light, with its sinister, yet colorful hue, enveloped the Espeon.

Alden demanded a Confuse Ray from his faithful Umbreon. The black fox-like creature began glowing in an eerie purple aura, and before he could react, Espeon was caught in the same aura. The Psychic-type's eyes began twitching rapidly as the Umbreon's attack began taking effect. Espeon was left in a dazed state, clumsily stumbling around.

"Looks like the confusion will be difficult for it to shake," I said, keeping an eye on the sky, in case the Future Sight attack decided to come early.

After a few seconds, Espeon seemed to sober up, but its eyes were still spinning rapidly. The brilliant red gem on its forehead began glowing with a peculiar purple energy as it gently swayed.

"Not good..." I thought to myself, preparing to sprint if it became necessary, "in its current state, Espeon's attacks can hit anywhere."

As I had predicted, Espeon began firing its Psybeam in random directions. Several of the blasts vanished before they could hit any, and some just knocked up dirt. One even managed to explode right under Espeon, causing minor damage to the cat. This made him give up, and instead it tried to snap out of its stupor, which would give Umbreon an opening to strike. However, the sky above us began to glow with a faint purple hue...

As Espeon's rage ended, it appeared as though a perfect time for Umbreon to counterattack the pink cat. Alden was so focused on what Umbreon's next move should be, he neglected to notice the pink hue in the sky appearing above Umbreon. Now is the perfect time to further break down the Espeon's defenses thought Alden to himself. "Alright Umbreon, lets use a T...".

He stopped mid sentance as he noticed the pink swirl in the sky above the black pokemon. "Quick Umbreon!" yelled the trainer. He knew that the future sight attack was about to hit. "Use a Quick Attack!"

This may not be a strong attack but it may be the only way to avoid the Future Sight and further weaken the Espeon. Who knows... with any luck, Umbreon's close proximity may cause the Espeon to take residual damage. Alden knew in the back of his mind that this was wishful thinking... but hey, why not give it a try?

Umbreon's rings burned with a bright blue color as her body moved rapidly, becoming a blur. She took off, charging at the confused Espeon as fast as her legs would carry her. As she approached the pink cat, still burred out of view, she lowered her head and prepared to smash against the Espeon with her full force.

It seemed that Alden was coming to the same conclusion as I had, Future Sight was coming, but when and where was still a total mystery. Umbreon dashed forward as fast as it could, trying her hardest to hit Espeon with his own attack. Apparently, Espeon had decided to try using Psybeam again, once again aiming at the ground, sending itself flying with the force of the blast. Now, whether it had done this out of confusion, or instinct, I would never find out, but in the end, it worked out for the pink cat.

Umbreon stopped, watching the Psychic-type hit the ground after shooting itself. The sky formed a swirling abyss above the cat, and suddenly, a large purple beam crashed down on Umbreon. Fortunately, she had sensed her trainer's worries, and sidestepped to avoid the attack, but she was fast enough to avoid the resulting blast. The Future Sight attack had exploded, knocking Umbreon into the air. Espeon was still confused however, and showed no interest in attacking.

"What's your next move, Alden?" I thought to myself.

OoC: Been having to deal with final exams for over the past week, hence the inactivity.

Alden cringed a little as the explosion hit Umbreon, sending the black pokemon flying. While she had successfully dodged the beam, the explosion showed that she obviously hadn't moved far enough away. We'll have to work on that in training, thought Alden to himself. Nevertheless, the hit was rather weak, and Umbreon was apparently able to shrug off the small amount of damage rather easily. Meanwhile, the Espeon was still in a fit of confusion. I guess now is as good a time as ever to go back on the offensive.

"Umbreon!" shouted her trainer. "Quick, while the Espeon is still confused, lets use another Faint Attack!" The black pokemon obliged. She closed her yellow eyes for a split second, focusing as the azure rings on her body faded into blackness. Then suddenly, she leaped forward in the direction of the Espeon, her rings ablaze with a brilliant blue glow. Umbreon faded out of view mid-jump, and then faded back into view a split second later behind the pink cat. Using the momentum of her leap, she twisted her tail around, preparing to slam the Espeon with it.

Umbreon's Faint Attack was certainly impressive. With a few quick movements, the black cat was able to completely fade from view, reappearing above the dazed Espeon, its tail ready to strike the other cat's head. The blow smashed the Psychic-type downward, its face hitting the rocky ground below it.

"That's going to give him a serious headache," I laughed.

While the attack had hurt, the blow to the head had also called Espeon back to its senses. The cat flexed its muscles, knocking Umbreon off of it, and into the air. Espeon's gem began glowing with a greenish tint, like that of a disgusting bug.

"Oh no," I said.

It was a rare sight, few Espeon were able to use Signalbeam, and this is the first time I've seen it used in the wild. The beam hit the airborne Umbreon forcefully, exploding in a wisp of green smoke. Umbreon managed to regain balance, but it was swaying strangely.

"Looks like Espeon returned the favor..." I said, worried for Umbreon's sake.

After seeing how successful its last attack was, Espeon prepared another Signalbeam, and Umbreon's confused state might spell trouble, unless Alden can come up with something clever...

Umbreon swayed slighly, obviously having been confused by the previous signal beam. This could be bad, thought Alden to himself. Umbreon's eyes closed a little and the opened again, as the black pokemon stumbled and teetered, almost falling to the ground. Still... Espeons with Signal Beam are rare. If I could catch this, that would be pretty awesome.

"Alright, Umbreon return!" Shouted Alden, holding his poke ball up. A red light shot out of the little red and white sphere. Engulfing Umbreon, the light then disappeared back into the poke ball, taking the pokemon with it. Alden clipped Umbreon's ball to his belt and then pulled out another. "Come on out Flareon!" Alden pointed the poke ball at the ground and another red light appeared, with the fiery Flareon appearing within the light. Flareon eyed the Espeon, his fire flaring slightly.

"Use a Flamethrower," said the trainer, pointing at the pink cat. Flareon's fiery mane and tail flared up as the pokemon reared back. As soon as he landed on his front paws again, he opened his mouth, sending a jet of red/orange flames shooting at the Espeon.

Alden wasn't going to risk Umbreon being damaged further, so he swapped it out for Flareon, a red dog-like Pokemon with a yellow mane. I noted that this was the 3rd Eevee that I'd seen today; a new personal record.

"Use a Flamethrower," Alden called out.

Flareon braced itself, drawing in energy from the oxygen surrounding it, and channeling a bit from inside itself. Heat built up inside the beast's mouth, soon becoming small flames. It then let out the flames it had gathered, releasing a shimmering stream of fire, the light of which reflected off the glimmering earth of the valley. The sudden change in opponents seemed to confuse Espeon, but it managed to avoid the flames in the knick of time. It then began building psychic energy, harnessing it with the red jewel in its forehead. The pink cat prepared a nasty Psybeam for its new opponent.
