Hello!

It's Friday night, I'm out of school, and The Zoo is well and truly OPEN! Have fun, and please don't feed the animals!

http://i54.tinypic.com/35aui3p.png

The shapeshifter. A mythical race that only haunts our world today. Science has nullified them; history has forgotten them; they are an impossible race, animal turned human.

But in a parallel world close to our own, the impossible is about to become reality.

12th December, 2010. And a very strange occurence. At around 10:00, a wolf went on the rampage in Camden Market, London, killing 2 people and seriously injuring another. Now everyone knows that the wolf, as a species, no longer exists anywhere in England, and how the animal managed to get into a bustling center of commerce. The police closed the case as quickly as they could, blaming the attack upon an escaped zoo animal-turned-wild. But by the 14th, the incident was no longer isolated. A tiger had broken into a house, killing a whole family. The animal, like the wolf, was put down, and both cases were freshly examined for study. These were no ordinary animal attacks.

Alongside that, people began to go missing. A woman named dissapeared after telling her husband she had gone to Camden Market to do some shopping. The body of the fourteen-year-old girl killed alongside her family by a tiger was never found. No blood, no signs of a struggle. Just there one minute, and gone the next. Everywhere the killings went, there were always unexplained happenings; missing bodies, teenagers, adults. The only links between the attacks were the fact that there were no signs of a struggle, and every person that vanished was never under the age of eleven.

It was only by the 24th, with one hundred and two dead, and at least seventy missing, that the truth was uncovered.

A bobcat that had savaged two people was brought into examination, the first animal the police had been able to subdue without killing it. After a series of blood tests, the scientists found something very odd in the subject's DNA. A mutation. The chromosomes had doubled; one set of ordinary bobcat genes, and a set that looked suspiciously like human. It was decided that the animal be kept in quarantine to be observed. For the first twenty-four hours, the animal remained the same; vicious, crazed, and with no human tendencies at all. Then, exactly twenty-four hours since the attack began, a sleepy guard rubbed his eyes and stared confusedley at the security camera screen. He blinked. He blinked again. But it was still there. A man was lying where the bobcat had been sleeping a moment ago, in tattered rags. The scientists and security were notified, and the man was woken from his apparently deep slumber. But, even after much testing and interrogating, the man still yielded no answers. He remembered nothing of how he got there; where he had been, nor of what he had been doing. All he could remember was sitting down with his wife and son...and then nothing.

By now, the government, and the public, were pressurising science for an answer. And so science gave them their answer. The shapeshifter had materiallized into everyday existence, and life would never be the same again. And so, on Christmas morning, Operation Zoo was launched. Every shapeshifter, animal or human, was rounded up, and taken to the Zoo. This was a old military site that had been left to ruin and repair since World War II, and now was the new home for almost 150 captured shapeshifters. A 10-metre wall was built around the chosen site, topped with barbed wire, and the mutants were airshipped in by helicopter, the animal relased from cages lowered into the ground. And then they were alone. Humans ranging in age, from eleven to around fourty, now found themselves in a new world. After exploring the site, and testing out the new rules of this new reality, it was discovered that after the first mindlessley painful shift, it was possible to shift upon demand, and relatively painlessley. At first, a loose group of shifters formed a sort of council, but were quickly disbanded when several of them were killed by a member of another group of would-be leaders. Then came a period of panic that lasted for a while, as dominance was established, and others realised their other power: to kill. around 90 died, maybe even more had a sqaudron flown in a tranqed the survivors.

Eventually, once the battle died down, there were two groups, or Houses, the name coined by a fifteen-year old in memory of a distant school. Forest House, and Plane House. The two live in seperate areas; the forested area, and the runway strip, and are on the brink of another war, caused by stealing food supplies from both sides. No Keeper will save them this time. This time, the Zoo is closing down. For good.

Naomh Lupez
Mexican Wolf
Somewhere in the Forest, near the river.

She could feel the hum of the forest under her paws. Long claws dug into soft, fertile soil, veined with tree roots as thick as her foreleg and twice as long. Her fur brushed the stout trnk of a tree, worn and cracked with age, leaves dappling sunlight on her thick-furred back. Her eyes were focused on the river glimmering promises of fish through the thinning trees leading up to its bank, out of reach for the Mexican wolf staring transfixed by the beauty of the shimmering, leaping froth of fast-flowing water. She could also see a little further down the bank, where the waters calmed into a smooth ribbon of life weaving through the forest it had created.

Naomh Lupez sighed, a suprisingly human-like sound, and her tail swished through the leaves, a faint echo of a dog wagging its tail. This was home. This was where she was meant to be.

A sound split her thoughts, as if an animal had shifted slightly on the cracked leaves littering the forest floor. Annoyed, Naomh lifted her feathered tail level to her body, not in greeting, but as a show of defiance, and moved silently forward into the thickening undergrowth. Whoever was there was going to get a nasty suprise.

Drake Merwood
Human
Ruined Plane

Drake clicked his tounge noisily against the roof of his mouth as he stared distractedly up at the shattered windscreen of the plane. Shadows were moving inside, but he paid them no heed, squinting his eyes as he examined the shards of glass sticking out of the frame. He supposed they could be of some use, but he would have to check first. Sighing a little, he boarded the aircraft, to meet kids and adults sleeping, fighting, some even staring wistfully out of the windows as if expecting the craft to suddenly fly them out to Barbados. Drake shook his head slightly at that notion, barely noticing the way the passengers respectfully stepped out of his way as he passed. The engine was long out of gas, and he doubted the outsiders would be sending out any high-octane aeropane fuel along with their occasional food package.
Reaching the door to the cockpit, he wrenched open the rusty door to find a thirty-year-old dozing in the captain's seat. 'Get out.' Drake snarled, and watched with faint pleasure as the man ran out of the door. He reached the window pane, selected a sharp-edged fragment of glass, and tugged it bodily from the frame after some straining and grunting, before wrapping it securey in an old rag. Sure, it wouldmake a good blade, and there was no scrap metal left to make a new one starting from scratch, but it would need a good handle...He suddenly remembered the roll of masking tape secured to his belt, and rolled the sticky stuff around and around the base of the glass, until it was a thick, secure handle. Best he could do, considering the circumstances.
Suddenly studying the cockpit for the first time, he grinned and sank into the seat, spinning around in it a few times for effect. He could get to like this place. Embedding himself in the torn, but still soft plush covering, he lay back and smiled at the ceiling. This was turning out to be a good day.

Elsetta padded towards the river slowly, with the feeling someone was there, listening, waiting for her. The tension was heavy. Elsetta slowly shuffled towards the river and began to drink, her thirst not near quenched yet. She needed water, a lot of it, to make up for her lack of it.

Rinn wandered around in the forest, seemingly lost. He had been walking for a few hours now, determinded to not use his shapeshifting form. He reached a clearing in the trees, and he could see it; the river. He could see a Panther and a Tiger by the riverside, both conversing and drinking... Rinn was thirsty. As quickly as he could, Rinn shapeshifted into his Fox and bolted towards the river, bowing down and taking a quick sip before rushing back into the trees, peering out at the two animals using the trees to his advantage.

Naomh Lupez
Mexican Wolf
Riverside

Almost at once, Naomh caught the faint sound of pawsteps, and watched silently as a tiger, possibly Siberian, padded slowly up to the river, and bent its head to drink. Naomh growled quietly under her breath, and moved closer to the flowing water. Plain, or Forest, it was hard to tell; she didn't know many of the Forests by name, and it was common to meet one she could barely recognise. However, she would often catch a Plain trying to sneak into their territory, and so she wasn't ready to take any chances.

However, the next shifter to come into her line of vision was one she definitely knew. Tracy? Tina? No, it was Tam. She watched the pitch-black cat make her way down to the river, looking irritated, and take a sip, nodding at the tiger relatively cordially. So that made two Forests by the river, unless the panther had had a sudden change of heart concerning alliances. Still not too willing to show herself, she listened hard as to decipher the cats' speech. It was easy for members of the same family to understand each other, but the less you were related, the harder it got. She recollected a wasted afternoon trying to convince a King cobra shifter to get the hell out of her den, and retreated a little further, ears flat on her skull. No point in makng a fool of herself, whatever the circumstances.

Then she saw a human bloke sprint through the trees, before arriving at the river, taking a quick sip, and darting off into the trees again. Naomh snorted; she wouldn't be suprised if he was a Plain, he looked stupid enough. Then again, who would even think of going into enemy territory without shifting? She had stolen stuff from the Plains plenty of times, and one thing as for sure, if she sauntered in there as a human, they would rip her skin off. Carefully, as not to spoil her fun, she crept up behind him, shifted, and whispered sweetly in his ear, 'Look behind you next time.'

Rinn, in his black fox shift, jumped, spinning around and growling at the apparant enemy behind him. What he saw was a rather big looking Mexican Wolf, looking at him rather dangerously. He stopped growling, straightened up and smiled slightly, shifting back into his human form, running a hand through his hair.

"Maybe, you should look behind yourself before you plan on sneaking up on me next time."

He looked behind the Mexican Wolf at his sister, Livv, a large Komodo Dragon perched on a tree.

Naomh's eyes shifted slightly to accomadate for the new threat that was currently in the form of a large Komodo Dragon perched within the boughs of an old oak. She almost laughed.

The hunter has become the hunted.

Leaning against a tree almost casually, she said, 'Well, you make powerful friends.' The shifter racked her brains. Komodos were not the kind of thing you see everyday, and she was a little annoyed at herself for not remembering the human hidden within the scales. Then it clicked.

'You're...Livv?' she said, speaking directly to the large reptillian creature. 'And you're her brother. The two siblings.' Her eyes didn't leave the far more dangerous lizard to even glance at the boy, but her muscles relaxed. Definitely Forests. She had seen Livv and her brother, and heard of Livv's shift, but had failed to pick up exactly who the guy was.

'The fox and the dragon, hmm? Guess I don't stand a chance.' Sticking out her hand to the boy, she said 'I'm Naomh Lupez. Forest House. Who the hell are you?'

Allison ambled over to the water. She wanted to be alone for once in her life, for goodness' sake. The river was usually solitary, but it seemed she had picked a busy spot. A bizarre category of human and animals sat on the far side of the river. All seemed to be Forest House. Not like she really cared. When someone tried to infiltrate the border, she usually just reported it and went back to business. She was good at fighting in human form, but if they decided to take it into an animal form, she might as well slap a pat of butter on herself on her head and call herself toast. Otter shifts were not good for fighting. Actually, they weren't good for much besides swimming, fishing, and looking cute. Why couldn't her shift be something big and scary? She inhaled, filling her cheeks with air, and blew out through her mouth, and turned to walk away.

Well, it looked like pretty much everyone there had forgotten about the girl leaning against the tree. Well, it was just the way she liked it.

Naomh watched silently as they gathered, excited by a chance to fight, to takeback what had been stolen. And quite a lot had been stolen. She had buried a rabbit just a few days ago, only to find the land around dug up and reeking of lion. She couldn't remember ever meeting a lion shifter in Forest before. And that most definitely wasn't the only occurence.

Rinn as a fox let out a snarl and bounded up to the party, obviously pleased with the chance to do some fighting, before turning to his sister, asking her if she wanted to join in a language that was almost effortless for the now wolf-shaped Naomh to understand. Slipping silently into the trees, the rest of the conversation was swallowed up as she crouched between two thorny bushe, but she could still see the silouettes of Tam, tiger and Rinn, darting off through the trees. Livv stayed behind. The wolf made a low growl that almost sounded like laughter. She found it funny that they hadn't missed the presence of an entire peson.

Not the most observent shifters i've ever met. Suddenly compelled to follow the party and beat up some Plains, she was distracted by a sudden movement as Livv slipped silently into Komodo form and up a tree. The wolf growled. Something was coming.

But, as Naomh watched, the 'something' turned out to be a girl whom Naomh recognised almost immediately walking up the path. It was Allison, an otter shifter she had met once out hunting. Good fisher and swimmer, but not much else. About to shift, she was distracted by the fact that where there once was a girl, there was now a terrified otter sprinting towards the river.

Great. Obviously, Allison had caught sight of Livv and begun 'fleeing for her life' Staying in wolf form, Naomh began running fast through the trees and caught up with the otter just before the riverbank, scrabbling to block access to the river and panting 'She's not going to kill you, you know. Calm down!'

"Prove it," she said, baring her teeth. "I saw-" he? she? "it lick it's lips, okay?" She could try going around, but that would probably result in her face being permanently smooshed into the ground. "What do you know whoever it is? What is that, anyway?" She gestured a paw at the giant lizard.

A rustle in some nearby bushes alerted Livv, who snapped her head up and forward to try and see what it was. The rustle was only a quiet one, but Livv's hearing was superb. Jumping down from the branch she quickly scuttled around the riverside, attempting to smell out any opposing shifters. And the scent of a wolf and an otter were the first two smells to pass through her nostrils. Slowly, she began to make her way to the river bank, looking for the two animals she had just caught a scent of; and almost immediately, they were there. She recognized the wolf as Naomh Lupez, a girl who had earlier introduced herself to her brother. She smiled, shifting back into her human form and blowing a line of hair out of her face, and then yelled out excitedly.

It took a while to decipher the otter's furious squeals and snaps of teeth, but by the time Naomh had got it, it was far too late.

Ah, hell. Naomh couldn't help but swear slightly under her breath as first Livv, then Tam followed by the rest of the raid party she was leading turned up on the spot. Tam growled something that Naomh wasn't fast enough to understand but though most likely to be a sort of expression of 'What the hell!?' Then came a long explanation from the now reptillian Livv, and finally Rinn pointed at the otter with a small black paw.

'Who's this?'

Naomh shifted back into a human fluidly for the benifit of the various species oddly grouped together in front of her, and said smoothly, 'Since most of you haen't been properly introduced'-she gave Livv a quick glance then-'this is Allison. Sorry about that, by the way.' she said, now speaking directly to the otter. 'Just didn't want you running like crazy everytime your saw Livv's shift. It would be a tiny bit antisocial.'

Naomh suddenly found out she was very, very tired. Plonking herself on the soft grass lining the river, she yawned rather pointedly. 'Oh, and if Miss Tiger here is so very bored you'd better get on with the raid.' The raid. Suddenly Naomh wanted to beat up some Plains so bad, but she qualmed her excitement. She had been up for half of the night. Now was not the time to go stealing stuff from her enemies.

Naomh almost laghed out loud at the tiger's comment, which despite taking a little while to decipher, was well worth the effort. Naomh would sleep later, but what kind of idiot would fall asleep next to a fast-flowing river in plain view of anyone who decided to walk on by?

She settled for a faint smile that traced the corners of her lips, and replied, 'No. You?' This was the shifter that had proclaimed she was going to fall asleep on the spot no more than a minute ago.

"I see you laughing at me," she spat. She was always mocked and laughed at.

"You just flomped down on the ground for no reason at all! If we're going to the plains, we're not going to collapse on the ground and expect to be there, SHALL WE?!" Elsetta yelled. She could see the laughter in Naomh's eyes, the laughter she had seen in too many eyes.

Vivi walked to Elsetta, her movements swift yet graceful. Vivi's husky form was truly beautiful.

"El! Stop it!" Vivi snapped, showing obvious signs of fury. "She has no intention of bullying you, you twit!"

Vivi whacked Elsetta across the face with a paw. Livi bounded out and took hold of Vivi's neck like she would a cub of hers. Livi plonked Vivi down between the trees and pulled Elsetta aside, telling Elsetta to calm it, because Naomh was not trying to bully her, just... blah de blah.

Elsetta pulled away and Livi purred. Elsetta had gotten the point. Vivi and Livi walked forwards.

"We would like to assist in the raid," Livi said.

Rinn snarled, looking at all of the shifters around him. An odd bunch, he thought, staring at the Snow Leopard and the Husky that had just walked over to them. He glanced at his sister, Livv. A special one, she was. Not many people could shift into a Komodo Dragon... Actually, Livv was the only person Rinn knew that could do that in the Zoo. Scratching the top of his head with a claw, he spoke.

"Are we going on this raid, or what? Because if we're not going soon, I'm just going to go on my own."

There the young man sat, counting blades of grass he managed to grab from the sturdy earth. "One, two, three..." he had started to count, but a gust of wind interrupted his counting as the grass fell from his hand. He sighed and looked towards the heavens. "What a boring day" he thought. Choi set out a hand on the ground for balance and hoisted himself back on his two feet.

He was alone. Not a person within a hundred yards could be found. But that was how Choi liked it. With all of these strangers in this place, Choi thought that he could never get used to being around them. Besides, more people would just burden him. The boy looked down at his left hand and examined the ring on his finger. He was surprised that the officials allowed him to keep it.

"What's the purpose of being here?" Choi shouted unintentionally, "why me?" The lad had the slightest notion of falling right where he stood and begin to sleep, but something in his gut told him otherwise. Choi sighed once again and started walking into the vast openness in front of him.

Ah, hell.

When the tiger began spitting and hissing angily at her, Naomh jerked back visibly as though hit by an electric shock. Feline eyes shone hatred at her, and for a moment the shadow of the wolf passed over Naomh's, but she fought the shift, only to find herself half-crouching and at the edge forest, with almost no idea of how she got there.

She closed her eyes, breathing deeply, and focused her mind. The mistake had been made. They had seen her fear. There was no turning back.

So much for being sociable.

Without a word, she melted back into the trees, just as Tam grinned her approval of a newly expanded party, due to two new shifters that had recently arrived on the scene. Whether she knew them or not, Naomh didn't wait to find out. Shifting neatly into a wolf, she took two leaps to cross the river, and dissapeared into the darker, more thickened brambles on the other side, before shifting again and yawning. This was by far the most uninhabited part of the entire Forest, with only hunting parties and a few stray shifters wandering this far. Surely no-one would be around.

Choi didn't know much about the two warring factions in this place. All he knew is that it was a dangerous relationship, and that if he were to come across one of the "Forests," he was likely to sustain major wounds, possibly death. It was actually quite humorous, he had thought, to throw a bunch of people into a single establishment and watch them scurry to each other like...animals.

Nonetheless, he had never come across another person, Forest or Plain, since he was thrown into this place. Choi had read stories of people becoming insane from the lack of social engagement, but they, Choi knew, were weak.

It was around this time that Choi remembered his stomach and how it ached from lack of food. Perhaps meeting up with a fellow shifter would prove beneficial. There had to be more people in here that were well more supplied than he. But that would come up as it would, Choi's eyes began to survey the land, looking for a source of food and drink.

And so the king surveyed his kingdom.

Not that he was the official leader; the Houses were very disorganised in that respect. More of a captain.

Peering out of the window to his right from the comfortable swivel chair, he noted the distant, but still visible Wall towering above him, topped with sharp barbed wire glinting in the sunlight. He envisioned himself running across the wing, leaping the 20 feet up and 30 feet across, clearing the barbed wire to defy the very Wall itself with his freedom...

Drake shook his head angrily. To defy the Wall woud be to defy his life. Everything was perfect here. Sure, the read-made food in the warehouse was beginning to run out, and the only source avaliable was the river and occasional food parcels, but he was in charge. More than he had ever been out there. Turning his head to the left, he narrowed his eyes against the glare of the sun, and saw a faint shadow, making its way across the great swathe of grass far away.

Drake melted into his lion form and instantly his vision leapt forward, exposing the shape of a boy. A low growl tore from his throat as he squeezed through the broken pane, jumped smoothly onto the wing, and began running. There was only two possibilities as to who this boy was; one of the Plains, and one of the Forests. And Drake was betting the latter. Every Plain knew there was nothing worth seeing out there. What would a Forest know about his territory?

And so the lion began the hunt. Balancing on the end of the wing, he took a deep breath and jumped onto the hot, cracked tarmac of the runway, before continuing to race along the harsh landscape, reaching the first of the tufts of grass in a matter of a few bounds. After about five minutes of continuous running, he caught up with the guy.

Forest!

There could be no other answer. Drake knew ever single corner of his kingdom, and this shifter was most definitely not in it. Crouching down in a tuft of long grass, he growled, before letting loose a huge roar, and leapt.

Almost at once, Naomh could hear a faint thump of paws hitting rock, and the quiet crackle of leaves and bracken as they were pushed aside. She sprang up, and growled softly, loping even further into the thickest reach of the woods.

Why are they following me?

The intensity of the sun made Choi wipe the sweat off of his brow. He cursed the day he became one of the Plains, dealing with the heat and all. His wolverine form wouldn't help either; both him and it were more accustomed to the cold. The wolverine would only use more energy, so Choi made a compact to rarely draw out his shifting ability.

As Choi descended over a small slope, he thought he heard a noise. However, he merely continued walking, I am pretty thirsty afterall, I'm hallucinating. A few more steps after and he definitely heard rustling on the grounds behind him. Choi tried to act tough and not appear to notice it, but suddenly the figure behind him let out a gut-wrenching roar, one that would make you clutch your heart, hoping it wouldn't stop for good. The boy turned around just as the beast lunged forward, ramming his right shoulder. Choi's eyes widened in pain and clutched his own shoulder, hoping it wouldn't fall off. The beast was a lion, which instantly told Choi that he wasn't looking for a game of cards.

"If you want my life," Choi snorted, "show me how hard you will work for it." He knew the ferocity of the wolverine, it has been noted to take down fully grown bears at times, but this beast is no bear. This is a lion. A lion with a human conscience. Choi knew he was outmatched and starving, but he jumped backwards and shifted into his wolverine, landed on his hind legs. He flashed his teeth for only a moment and then retaliated by jumping for the lion's body.

What the... As soon as Drake heard the guy's angry shout, he snorted. What kind of smart-arse prick would fight a lion just for food they hadn't got to steal? As soon as the man melted into his shift, Drake found out. A hungry, angry, wolverine shifter smart-arsed prick.

The lion jumped to the side to avoid the angry mammal, but he growled a curse through clenched teeth as the sharp teeth made a nasty cut along one leg. Wheeling round, he used one massive paw to attempt to slam the wolverine in the side and pin him, and growled, 'Give me one good reason I shouldn't kill you here and now for tresspassing on my territory, Forest.'

'Naomh...Come back!....I need to say something...!'

Oh, come on.

Naomh was tired. Very tired. Longing for a decent sleep, she wheeled round, and stalked up to the unknown shifter, snarling to reveal long, sharp teeth.

'I don't know who you are. I don't know why the hell you want to talk to me. All I know is that I am very, very, tired, and if you want to have a little counselling session about Miss Tiger over there, then spit it out.' There she waited, less-than-patiently, for the Husky to spit it out.

Vivi snarled. "Fine, I won't apologize for what she's done if this is the way you treat me."

And with that, Vivi turned around and rocketed back over to the right side of the river in two consecutive leaps. Livi and Elsetta padded over.

"Well?" Livi asked, licking a paw.

"Well, she was too rude, and she was," Vivi snarled. Anti-social people were considered dirt to her, because they would never get anywhere in life being the miserable gits they were.

Choi tasted the blood dripping from his teeth and was satisfied, but only for a moment. He managed to look up at the incoming paw, which struck his head and forced him to collapse on the ground. The large animal was too large for Choi; he was now unable to move due to the paw stapled to his body. He heard the shifter speak coldly.

"My territory..."

"Forest"

If a wolverine could smile, he was definitely grinning. Choi had assumed this is the hotshot of the entire zoo, or at least so the shifter thought. The lion would fit so appropriately.. "He also thinks I'm with the Forest," Choi thought, "is that why I'm within the grasp of death? At first, the boy had the notion of playing along, ebbing on this lion and having a little fun. But the lion's stare was warning enough, one false move and he would be food for the vultures. The idea was shrugged off.

"Honestly, if you think you own this land..." Choi began, "you should recognize who really is a friend or foe. Needless to say, we aren't friends, but we are both not Forests then, are we not?"
