This was serious business.
In the grassy field – the plain grassy field, this stereotype of stereotypes, with a plain blue sky and fat white clouds above – it was time for two entities, known only as Osha-WHAT and Hitmonfighter, to meet in battle. Not only was this the first time for this quite legendary matchup, but this was the first time either of them had ever battled. All of this was taken into account and duly factored into the referee’s most solemn expression.
This, indeed, was serious business.
The ref shot a glance at Osha-WHAT, and said, “The challenger sends first.”
Osha nodded, picking out a Pokeball from her belt with care. What a way to start her first Pokemon battle with this, the creature spawned from the line of Unova’s greatest dragons!
“Go, Kibago!” she cried as she tossed the Pokeball, using the ancient and secret name of this amazing beast rather than the demeaning term modern homo sapiens now used for it. A creature with a hide of scintillating olive scales and red eyes filled with the fires of the ancient ones appeared in a haze of scarlet light. Its tusks gleamed in the light – Axew, heir of legends.
After a few seconds of consternation, Hitmonfighter made a choice that was no less noble. He tossed forth his Pokeball, and out of it came a handsome yellow reptile with a large mouth and a red underbelly. It tugged restlessly at the folds of richer-hued, baggy hide around its hips, which it could pull over itself in times of need and use to hide from dire foes.
They were Axew and Scraggy, and they were ready for battle.
“All right,” said the ref, sizing up the two Pokemon and suddenly wondering why on earth she letting this get so dramatic, “start.”

ROUND ONE

Neither Pokemon was very fast, but Kibago had the advantage of being just slightly nimbler than a pantsed snake. Hearing her orders, she tugged out a great deal of grass from the ground for a quick, expendable decoy. She opened her mouth; a single wisp of white energy poured from her and into the bundle of grass. The Axew snapped her jaws shut as the energy took hold, floating to the center of it and shaping it from within into a very crude copy of an Axew.
Disappointed, Punch nevertheless dutifully launched into his next move. He took a step forward, striking a muscle pose and blowing a kiss toward Kibago. A pink heart materialized and floated lazily over, obviously intended to shatter on Kibago. However, the heart only hit the copy, and neither the decoy nor its maker were affected.
Kibago had the next move, and she gave a little smoke as she thought of it. She began to gather energy in the pit of her stomach, feeling something even more disgusting than bile rising up. It hit her throat with a bizarre and none-too-pleasant tingling, accompanied by the bitter taste of something downright poisonous. Hastily she spat out the glob that was rising, sending a disgusting violet spray flying at her foe. Punch barely had time to blink in surprise before the poison hit him. He wiped it off as quickly as he could, but he still felt the toxins seeping into his skin.
He glared at the smug Axew before him, then lifted a hand. From his rounded, stubby fingers sprouted long claws that had been kept hidden as a secret weapon. The claws began to glow with power, turning a tingling blue shade. Gripping his shed skin with his free hand, Punch rushed forward. Kibago watched without expression as the Substitute leaped into Punch’s path. The Scraggy wasted no time with the copy; he simply plunged his claws in, hitting the bundle of grass in the key point. Punch and Kibago jumped back as grass exploded all over the place. Kibago shot a smug glance at Punch, who shivered from poison, and both were anticipating whatever came next.

ROUND TWO

Kibago grinned as she heard her next order. It was time to give this little punk a lesson in respect.
This time she was to use a move that she rarely had – a move that had been adapted from the Flying-Types to fit the needs of the ground-bound class. It was fairly easy, since this move was powered by one thing alone – not wings or feathers, but downright speed.
The Axew rushed forward, a white glow starting at the tip of her olive-colored nose and spreading out into bright streaks that streamed along behind her. Kibago moved with astonishing speed, especially with her short legs, and within seconds she was slamming bodily into Punch, sending the Scraggy flying across the grass. Kibago skidded to a halt and watched Punch smugly as he struggled to right himself.
Punch certainly was having problems; his baggy ‘pants’ impeded his progress. When he finally managed to get himself on his feet – his body slick with dew – Kibago was laughing, her stubby hand pointed in derision. Punch felt a surge of anger. Was he going to take that? Heck no!
He already felt cold from the slowly mounting fever, so calling up glacial thoughts was a relatively simple thing. Energy surged into his hand, which he balled into a fist as the cold crept into it, forming into icy spikes on the curled digits. As soon as the frost had settled, he ran at Kibago with his fist curled low. He reached her in a few rage-filled bounds, slamming her jaw in an icy uppercut.
“Ax-EW!” she yelped with pain as her natural weakness struck her; she fell backwards. Punch stepped back smugly as Kibago stood once more. Her red eyes were filled with the fire of determination.
Kibago was ready to strike. Blindingly swift, she ran forward once more. White light streamed out behind her, this time originating from her claws rather than her nose. She ran right by Punch, nicking him with the small, illuminating talon. The Scraggy gave a cry of pain as his weakness slashed him, and he fell on his skin-garbed rump yet again.
But this time Punch was more prepared. The ice had already been forming on his rounded hand when his opponent had struck, and now he slammed the frozen fist into Kibago’s ample tummy, making her shriek in surprise and fly backwards. She expected the pain and cold to stop; instead it only multiplied, spreading across her body in a tide of ice. Within seconds she was immobile, with scuff marks in nothing obscuring her vision. It took her a few seconds to realize why Punch had fallen down laughing at her: the Axew was frozen in a block of solid ice!

Dragon Claw/Ice Punch~Dragon Claw/Ice Punch

Kibago glares at Punch through the ice. She's not going to take this lying down. A growl manages to escape her throat, and a small amount of fire builds up in her throat. With a guttural roar she opens her mouth and unleashes a fireball blast, the heat reducing her ice prison to liquid... well, at least she tries to. Unfortunately her mouth was closed when she was frozen, and so the fire can't actually escape to do its job. It only succeeds in staving off frostbite for a few moments before dying out.

Punch chuckles at Kibago's obvious frustration, then switches to serious mode faster than a bipolar schizophrenic. He pulls his pants up, a wicked grin on his face, and bursts forward, his right hand trailing behind him. The hand glows, light streaming out from the fingertips to extend into a wicked set of claws. Punch moves faster, and faster, approaching Kibago with as much speed as he can muster... and then stops, directly in front of the tiny dragon. He quickly swipes at Kibago's side, leaving an exposed gouge in the ice but in a place that doesn't compromise its integrity, before pointing and laughing at his frozen prey.

Kibago angrily forces energy down her arms into her own claws, causing them to glow. She uses what wiggle room she has to scrape at the ice around her hands. This wiggle room, however, is not enough, and all she succeeds at doing is scratching the inside. Punch laughs again, and forms another Dragon Claw, slashing Kibago's other side. And then, as though to add insult to injury, he gleefully notices an area of his skin that has started peeling off. He immediately sets to work tugging at the skin, and in no time at all a rather grotesque pile of yellow skin is lying on the grass, and Punch is moving around a bit, stretching out to get used to the feel of his new skin while Kibago just sits there uselessly.

ROUND FOUR

Kibago continued to wait in her ice clock, feeling very impatient. A little droplet ran across her field of vision and her claws now had a little bit of motion – just enough to scrape the ice in frustration. She struggled a little and tried to make the rest of her body move, but it was to no avail. She settled for giving Punch a very menacing glare.
Punch gave a little wink. This time there would be no troublesome grass doll to block him. Once again he struck his pose – flexing his right bicep while holding his molted skin with his left hand – and smiled charmingly at Kibago. He blew a kiss in her direction and, as before, a shower of pink sparks came from his mouth and coalesced into a heart-shaped blob. It floated toward Kibago, who could only watch with apprehension as it grew bigger and bigger. Then, with a weird shink noise, it exploded all over Kibago’s ice blocks, the dust finding its way to her through the cracks. She blinked, seeing Punch as if through new eyes. How could she not have noticed the razzle-dazzle in his smile or the odd cuteness of the little spike on his head? She would have given a gusty sigh of longing had she been able.
No! She told herself. Snap out of it; focus! She tried to escape again, wiggling as hard as she possibly could. She felt a little give, heard a cracking noise, then...
Nothing. A Pidgey called overhead and a Starly answered, but her situation remained the same. Kibago gave a little growl of frustration.
Punch, meanwhile, was hugely relieved that he had a chance to relax, if only for a moment. He flopped backwards on the grass and let out a deep breath, feeling a limited degree of energy come back into his sore body. It now seemed to be a waiting game, a play of attrition and will that had very much to do with luck and ice blocks.

ROUND FIVE

Kibago immediately began to wriggle and writhe the best that she could, her muscles straining and flexing within her ice block. She clawed at the place she’d felt giving before, and heard a slight groan as the ice shifted. It seemed immovable, however; Kibago growled in frustration and reluctantly began to shiver and wait, glaring with angry red eyes at Punch.

Punch gave a smile of relief and flopped down onto the grass, landing on his red underbelly and watching the clouds go by up above. He could feel a blessed recession of fatigue in his muscles and joints, as well as the small collection of scratches he’d gathered during the battle. He let his eyes half-close in pleasure, thinking that he pretty much had all the time in the world.

However, Kibago was about to prove him wrong. She scraped her claws in the ice, shoving her body weight forward, then...

Crrrck...

Crrerrrrrk...

WHAM!

The ice block shattered into frigid little fragments. Punch jolted in surprise as Kibago stood before him, grinning intimidatingly at her foe.

Kibago lifted her hands into the air, calling up the ancient and mystical powers of dragons. A swirling vortex of orange energy appeared between her palms, pulsing with power. It quickly began to resolve itself into an orange sphere, which Kibago threw at her foe. Punch squeaked with dismay at the sight of the incoming energy-fireball, then shrieked in pain as the power of the attack sent him flying; he felt like his whole body was burning. Kibago grimaced; she could feel the drop in her power after such an all-out powerful attack. The look on Punch’s face, however, was worth it.

Punch straightened himself rather stiffly, thinking his conditionals over. Kibago had used a move other than physical, so he was to use... Dragon Dance. He closed his eyes and began to stretch, spinning, twisting, and mocking punches; he was loosening up his muscles for speed of movement and precision of attack. He could feel his body limbering up, powerful and ready to take on anything. For a second, a faint blue-and-red aura flickered around him before it vanished.

He looked at Kibago, who was still picking ice shards out of her thin scales. She was beginning to narrow the gap, but...

They were both determined. Fatigue would likely decide this battle, and they were both pretty much even in said department.
