Flashing lights welcomed me into the room as I entered. One of the trainers who entered with me had to shield their eyes from the brightness within the arena. As far as I could understand, the arena had been thought up by the other trainer, Dino, as the arena for his gym. This battle would be a test for him so that he could get used to battling in his own arena. The other trainer, the one who was shielding their eyes with one arm, was 3m0d0ll – she certainly wasn’t going to make it easy for the potential gym leader. The two contestants took up their places on either side of the room while I stayed close to the door. With the battle about to start, the flashing lights ceased, leaving white tiles which would illuminate based on whose pokémon was standing on them. I motioned for the battle to begin and each trainer chose a poké ball; they were tossed into the air almost simultaneously and split at about the same time. A metallic beast of incredible intelligence materialised in front of 3m0d0ll while a black carrion bird rose before Dino – the tiles beneath them had turned green and purple respectively. The two combatants watched each other cautiously –both knew that this wouldn’t be easy but both of them would give it everything they could and go down fighting if they had to.

Coel managed to sneak in first. He gathered the powers of darkness and shadow, which was harder than it sounded in a room filled with lights, inside his body and prepared to unleash them on the Metang. The metal creature could only watch as the crow pushed off the ground and sped towards it; however, the glaring red eyes showed no sign of fear. It knew that the attack could hurt much more than it looked like it would but faced it only with the determination and fearlessness that befitted one of its kind. The Commander of Murkrow swooped in on Metang while channelling the stored up energy into his feet and talons. He struck the steel-type, leaving scratched along his side; fortunately, the attack hadn’t done too much damage... this time.

Now it was time to fight back – but Metang remained still. I rubbed my eyes and looked again at the pokémon; surely he hadn’t given up already. Something strange was going on here. I looked again and this time saw two piles of sand beneath each of its deadly claws – what was going on? Sand was pouring out of the monster’s claws but it wasn’t doing anything with it; then it was. As small particles of rock flew all over the place, 3m0d0ll smiled sweetly, her goggles already covered her eyes. I struggled to get mine on so that I could see what in the world was going on. This battle seemed to be getting interesting.

Now that the whole battlefield seemed to have been turned against him, Coel knew that it wasn’t a good idea to try and attack for the time being. Rather than that, he would hone his skills so that he could deal more damage when he did decide to attack. He watched his adversary carefully, making a mental note of where its weak points were and planning how he could hit them to cause more damage. By the time he’d finished analysing his opponent’s defences he knew that he would be able to hit harder than he could before.

And he was going to have to if his opponent had anything to do with it. The metal beast was immune to the deadly poisons which could cripple others, like Coel, but that wasn’t going to stop it using them in order to gain an advantage. Its claw-like hand took on a purple hue as he stored up deadly a deadly mixture of toxins that could fell a Wailord if given enough time. 3m0d0ll’s pokémon stepped forward and thrust one purple claw into Coel’s chest. The Honchkrow squawked and retreated a little to make a gap between himself and the opponent; his fluffy plumage had been badly damaged by the attack and now a horrible poison was running through his blood. To make matters worse, the sandstorm buffeted the flying-type until he was forced to land to avoid smashing a wall; the sandstorm had hurt him more than he’d like to say. For Dino, this battle was now a race against time – could he manage to bring down Metang before his bird was unable to continue.

Luckily for Coel, his adversary had suffered a little at the end of the round. If you looked carefully then you would have seen it step forward at the end of the round; you would have seen it step onto a purple tile. Now its eyes had begun to go misty and its vision was impaired. It would be much harder for the psychic beast to hit the Honchkrow during the next round, giving him a chance to strike.

Coel was angry and he wanted Metang to know it. The plotting he had done in the last round was now coming to fruition; he knew exactly what he had to do in order to bring down the metal menace he had been matched up against. Fire erupted from his beak, spilling out into the arena and causing the temperature to rise dramatically. Also, some fire headed straight towards Metang, whose clouded eyes could see the flames but not well enough to dodge them. Fire hit metal and made it heat up as Metang emitted some sort of sound which I assumed meant that he was in pain. The battle was certainly heating up.

But Metang could barely see the end of its nose due to the temporary effects of the arena. Since this made an attack on Coel almost impossible, it was glad that its trainer had decided that it should focus on boosting its defences for now. The beast’s metal armour started flashing silver as it hardened. It would be more difficult for Coel to damage Metang using physical attacks from now, but the Honchkrow didn’t seem too upset – in fact, he looked quite pleased with what was going on.

The carrion bird opened his mouth again but no fire came bursting forth as it had last time; this time an icy mist rolled from the curved beak. This haze mixed with the swirling sandstorm, weakening each of the combatants. Metang felt its newly strengthened armour wane away, leaving its sort of vulnerable to its opponent’s attacks. Meanwhile, Coel began to forget the brilliant plan he had come up with in the last round; it had worked so well up until now but from now on the mafia boss would have to work things out as he went.

Without the protection of enhanced metal armour, Metang knew that it had to do something to stay ahead of the competition. Using a cloth thrown to it by its trainer, it began to wipe dirt and sand off of its metal shell in an attempt to make it shine brightly once more. Sand that had built up during the sandstorm was shed and soon the metal was shining brightly once more. Even better, since it was now more streamlined than before, Metang could move more quickly – even quicker than Coel.

Speaking of Coel, the poison was still attacking him and getting stronger as it did. The bird groaned as pain rocketed through his system from every part of his body. He knew that he couldn’t keep this up for long – he had to take down Metang, and fast.

Metang, now that his speed had increased, was able to take the first strike, and it wanted to use it to cause as much damage as possible. It lifted his sharp claws from the ground and filled them with pulsing, brown energy; this energy then solidified to created several small rocks. After that, the heavy, steel arms were aimed at Coel, who was hovering nearby with a pained look on his face. A spray of rocks was ejected from the “palm” of Metang’s hand; they struck Coel hard and smashed him into the flashing panels on the wall in front of me. The carrion-bird screeched as she hit the wall and sunk to the ground as the rocks turned back to energy – he was taking a beating and he had to stop it soon.

For the moment, however, he was only concerned with getting rid of the poison running through his blood. Once he had pushed off the shiny white tiles and was hovering in the air once again, he closed his eyes to concentrate on healing himself. A pink aura formed around him and then became tinged with purple as the venom was brought out of his body. Coel’s face was screwed up as he focused on drawing out every last drop of the poison so that he suffered no more from the terrible pain he had been in during the last few rounds. Then, when it had been purged from his system, he focused the aura into a beam, which he fired at Metang. The attack hit the metal beast on the top of his circular head, but he shrugged it off as if nothing had happened – it was immune to the effects of poison.

Metang wasn’t too worried about its opponent getting rid of his leech; it had done enough damage while it was there. The super-intelligent creature was more concerned with the present – how could it hit this bird the hardest? It decided within seconds and was soon rushing at the crow with a dangerous look in its blood-red eye. One of its claws was glowing with silver light, getting brighter as the juggernaut approached its target. Coel could only watch as it approached; he was petrified with fear. Metang swung his glowing “fist” at the helpless mafia bird. The Honchkrow screamed in pain as the attack hit him; it had hit the same place as one of the rocks had smashed earlier, making shockwaves of pain surge through him. Things weren’t going well at all.

But maybe Coel would be lucky with this attack. More brown energy appeared in front of the bird as he struggled to stay in the air; this time, the energy turned into mud and sand rather than the rocks that Metang had created. The orb of earth hovered in front of Coel until he was stable, then he struck it with one wing, sending it flying for Metang, who allowed the attack to hit, knowing that it would do little damage. However, some of the grit got into its eyes, where it could irritate it and decrease its accuracy. Dino and Coel’s celebrations were cut shot, however, when the grit leaked out through the iron beast’s arms – its ability had stopped it losing accuracy so he could still see as well as before. This hadn’t gone according to Coel’s plan. At all.

Round Four

If Metang had possessed lips, it would have been smiling. Since it didn't, it just launched into its attack. It lifted one of its large, hefty steel arms, thinking the coldest thoughts it could think. The result - a coating of spiky icicles along the arm, and a glowing halo of frost around it - was almost immediate. Coel looked on warily as the ice spread to Metang's claws, making a ball of spiky ice like a large fist grasping nails. Once Metang was satisfied, it rushed forward, bearing down on Coel as fast as it could. It slammed the icy fist into the side of Coel's face, making him screech in pain. He groaned. There were now icicles on his face.
[Ice Punch: Metang, -12% Energy; Coel, -12% HP]

Coel truly wanted revenge. However, he knew that he was in bad shape, and that patience was ever a virtue. He could attack and do little this action, or he could give himself a boost now and give his opponent h-e-double-hockey-sticks later on.

If one was inside his head, they would have realized that this line of reasoning was actually helping Coel with his move. He was dreaming of all the powerful, fearful attacks he could unleash against Metang. Just dreaming about his victory and Metang's pain seemed to be strengthening him; reveling in his dark thoughts, he smiled. His body glowed red for a few seconds, and when the glow faded, Coel felt significantly stronger.
[Nasty Plot: Coel, -3% Energy, +2 SATK]

Meanwhile, Metang was simply going with the 'bring the pain' approach. His body began to glow white, lending him a non-chromatic appearance. He levitated a little higher, then charged at Coel, leaving behind trails of white light. He slammed into the Honchkrow as hard as he could, making him fly backwards with a 'caw' of pain. Coel's body hit the floor hard, making a white tile ping cheerfully into green life.
[Iron Head: Metang, -7% Energy; Coel, -13% HP]

Coel was beginning to feel even more sore, and really angry. His rage, in fact, made him feel like he was burning under his feathers. He was ready to project this feeling onto Metang. He leaped up, flapping his wings and fanning a circling air current into existence. The current, with each frenzied beat of Coel's wings, grew hotter, until it felt like Coel's feathers were about to catch fire. With a final flap, Coel sent the wind flying at Metang. The heat made Metang let out a hollow, rippling cry. It felt like he was being melted. When the wind faded, he glared at Coel angrily. It was time to clip this bird's wings.
[Heat Wave: Metang, -23% HP; Coel, -14% Energy]

Metang, having little clue what to do, just reacts to its trainer’s orders as quickly as possible. It summons up psychic energy into its arms and holds them up, allowing it to leak out and form a shell around its body. The shell, while completely permeable and therefore useless to physical attacks, will absorb a great deal of energy from special attacks. Being up against a supernaturally lucky bird with boosted special attack and access to fire, this is most likely a good thing.

Coel, also unsure of what to do but knowing that his attack had worked before, began to repeat the process, beating his wings to create a controlled air current and using the friction of his feathers to create energy and, by extension, heat. The superheated air between his wings begins compressing, rather than expanding as heat is wont to do, forming into a focused ball of energy, until finally Coel betas his wings one last time, much harder than before to send the Heat Wave flying. Being more compact and focused than a Heat Wave normally is, the energy, on hitting Metang, focuses on one specific spot, the side of his face, dealing great damage to it.

Metang gives a silent thanks to its trainer for thinking ahead, as he’s certain that that attack would have easily defeated him had the light screen not blunted it. He shakes off the pain, though, thankful that it didn’t leave any lasting damage, and sets his sights on Coel’s currently unguarded chest. He brings his arms in, becoming as aerodynamic as a giant hunk of metal can be, and zips through the air like a gunshot. Coel doesn’t see this coming, still panting from the exertion of his Heat Wave, and is thus unprepared for the sting of Metang’s horn, followed immediately by the feeling of being struck by a cannon point blank. He’s sent flying backwards, totally startled and sore. Indeed, the shock of the attack leaves him stunned for a few moments, unable to attack.

Szandor was eager to follow up on his success in the previous round. It knew that it didn’t have much time left before Coel found a way to finish it and that it’d have to stop him quickly if it wanted to win. Therefore, it decided to use a familiar attack, which it knew would deal a fair amount of damage. The Metang’s head began to glow white as it moved closer to the dark bird before him. Coel tried to outmanoeuvre the charging juggernaut but the Metang’s speed boosts had been enough to ensure that it would catch its target. Coel was caught between the charging Szandor and one of the tiled walls, which flashed frantically as he was driven into them. Dino’s heart raced as the steel-type withdrew. Had his pokémon survived the blow? The Honchkrow sank to the floor, seemingly finished, but managed to get back to his feet before being disqualified. He looked terrible; it was obvious that another hit would be all it took to finish him. The question was whether or not Szandor would be able to take another shot.

Dark energy swirled around Coel’s wings as he rose into the air. He knew that this could be his last shot and was determined not to waste it. He flew across the room in zig-zags to make sure that his target couldn’t predict the angle he would attack from. Szandor rose one arm to block the incoming carrion bird, but the Honchkrow managed dart around it and attack the Metang easily. His darkened wings sliced across its face, jabbing the eyes as it went. Szandor roared in pain and fell to the floor. Coel’s attack had done more damage than anticipated and the Metang wasn’t able to deal with the extra damage. It collapsed in a heap, the pain slowly ebbing away as it fell into an unconscious state.

So the first part of the battle was over, and Dino had one. But nothing was decided yet. Coel was still on the verge of collapse and would be easily defeated by 3m0d0ll’s next battler. It was still anyone’s game.

Round Seven

Doctor stared critically at the bird panting on the tiles before him. But he was not here to live up to his nickname: he was here to wreak havoc and beat the crap out of his opponent. He would do that shortly, however... For now, he was just going to troll. He lifted his hand and pointed at Coel, beginning to laugh at him with scorn plainly audible in the deep belly laugh. Coel, in his tired state, was already addled. But at Doctor's scorn, he was maddened.
[Taunt: Doctor, -6% Energy]

Coel was ready to attack - but his Trainer had given orders against it. Coel, tired and confused, was caught in the agony of indecision. He felt paralyzed by his own anger.
[Failed Endure: Coel, -4% Energy]

Doctor smirked. Now it was time for him to mop up. He rubbed his wires together to generate electricity, and then pointed one red tip at Coel. The tired Honchkrow had no time to react. The weak jolt was enough to put him down. As the electricity crackled into him, he fell, his battered body smoking. For Coel, it was over.
[Thunderbolt: Doctor, -3% Energy; Coel, -3% HP]

"Start with a Manet Rise to protect yourself from any Ground-type attacks, then use Ice Punch. If Gliscore uses Taunt the first action before you ca use Magnet Rise, then use Ice Punch. If you're Tormented and used Ice Punch in the first action, then use Brick Break the second. If he Protects against the second action, then use Double Team, but if your Taunted and he protects the second action use Thunder Shock."

Magnet Rise/Ice Punch~Ice Punch/Brick Break/Double Team/Thunder Shock.

Doctor’s wires crackle, and begin to rub against each other above his head. They pass electricity between each other, manipulating the natural currents in his body and focusing on one thing-polarization. The positive charge in his body begins to fill it and overwhelm it, while the negative charge is forced out of his feet. Through some very complicated technique which I’m not even going to begin to pretend I can BS my way through, Doctor begins to float off the ground, listing slightly from his lack of experience with the power of flight.

Scour doesn’t particularly care about this development. He hadn’t been planning on using Ground attacks anyway, because he and his trainer are far more clever and creative than that. He coughs slightly, filling his mouth with sweet, sweet poison. He can see a slight look of concern on Doctor’s face; obviously the Electivire has battled a poison user before, and expects to be hit by it. Hah. As if Scour would waste such good toxic ooze on him. He throws his head back, and spits the glob of Toxic straight up into the air. It goes up slightly, and then comes straight back down onto Scour’s face. It immediately and easily begins to sink in, and the enzymes in his body immediately go to work breaking down the poison as it spreads and multiplies, fueling them for rapid healing.

Doctor doesn’t quite know what to make of his enemy poisoning himself, but hey, it’s nothing much to him. His orders are clear, if complex: Ice Punch that sucker. Using his newfound power of flight, he surges forward, propelled by magnetic force. His hand glows an off white and begins emitting white frost. His fist draws back and then launches, unleashing a painful left hook to the Gliscor’s face in addition to the icy chill. Almost as soon as it hits, though, Scour begins glowing himself, an all-over red. Before Doctor can get away, Scour’s own claw comes swiping at him, striking with all the force unleashed on him two-fold. Doctor flies backwards, backflipping in the air, but quickly regains his… footing?
