I picked up a small rock and examined it carefully while the battlers drew out a makeshift arena on whatever sand they could find; it seemed to have been brought here by the tide from somewhere far away. I tossed it into the sea, which was strangely wild for this time of year – waves pounded the beach with startling aggression. I watched the churning ocean cautiously; the tide was on its way in and I didn’t think that the battle would be over before the hurriedly mapped out battlefield was washed away. So, with a little apprehension, I turned back to the two battlers and motioned for them to get on with the battle.

70hoLic, who had taken position at the north end of the beach, threw a single red and white ball into the air. It split, allowing light to spill out of it and a blue Frillish to take form; the ghost’s red eyes swept the arena, hunting for his opponent. Meanwhile, murgle-flag prepared to send out his own chosen warrior – this one was a sludge monster named Impulse. The Gulpin and Frillish took a moment to observe each other; then they were ready and the fun could begin.

Fish was eager to get the battle rolling so was able to get moving a little before his opponent. However, he didn’t attack straight away; he flew out over the sea, where he gathered up a ball of spinning water for his attack. The ball was fired at an incredible speed, almost breaking the sound barrier, smashing into Impulse before he knew that it had been released; his soft body compressed as the attack ploughed into him. The attack caused a reasonable amount of damage but carried a nasty sting in its tail – its suddenness had confused Impulse so much that he wasn’t sure where or who he was. Although he would be able to continue battling for the time being, there was no telling what could happen in the rounds to come.

But he seemed fine for now and the time had come for him to get revenge. Gulpin are known for the strong acids in their stomachs however they also make a variety of poisons inside their bodies; Impulse was going to use one of these toxic mixtures to attack the smirking Frillish. Chemicals sloshed together inside the laboratory that was the pokémon’s venom sac; reactions happened, substances bonded and fell apart again – the poison was created more quickly than usual due to Impulse’s boiling anger. Soon he was taking careful aim at Fish, who had come back into the hastily drawn perimeter of the battlefield. The Gulpin spat the mixture out; it sailed through the air, landing on the Frillish’s bulbous blue head. Some of it dripped down into his eyes to cause even more irritation. But the attack hadn’t caused as much damage as its creator had hoped – he might have to rethink his strategy a little before continuing.

It hit him almost immediately; his opponent was a water-type, everyone knew that water-types didn’t like it being too hot – he could use the weather against him. It wasn’t very sunny at that moment but, thankfully, the Gulpin had a way of changing that. Fire filled his mouth as he stared up at the grey skies; a fireball leapt from the small, green poison-type and soared into the clouds, where it exploded, bathing the trainers and their pokémon in light; the light didn’t die out like it normally would after an explosion though – it continued to illuminate the beach, it would for a while.

It didn’t affect Fish too much yet, however, since he was intending on using his ghost-type moves to break the Gulpin anyway. The Frillish’s terrifying eyes started to glow purple as he stared menacingly at his adversary; black beams of energy were created at the ends of his tentacles and swept across the sand and rocks before coming together to form a single ball of necromantic energy. The tentacles dropped back again as the beams ceased. Just as it seemed that something had gone wrong, a red eye opened in the ball of energy, glaring at Impulse, who cringed under its gaze. Rings of energy were emitted from the eye – several hit the green blob and made him cry out in pain. The attack did a lot of damage to the stomach pokémon – in fact, this round had not gone at all well for him. All he and his trainer could hope for was that the next round was a little kinder to them.

[Impulse] Gulpin (M)

The bout continued with Gulpin drawing on the power from the sunlight that blanketed the field. It was still a little confused, but managed to figure that the growing ball of solar energy in his mouth should be blasting Frillish - and so he aimed to do so. Once the ball grew to a considerable size, Gulpin let loose, a bright yellow beam streaming across the field and slamming directly into Frillish. Despite the raw power of the strike, Frillish appeared barely impacted, and simply floated back into position, with little damage being done.

To retaliate, Frillish opted to repeat its earlier strike, using its ghastly tentacles to draw ghastly energies into itself, creating another purple orb. The menacing red eye from earlier appeared once again, sending waves of red energy slamming into Gulpin. The pain was more so than that of Solarbeam, further angering the Poison-type.

As Gulpin prepared to realitate, it realized that it had not been given orders for its second action. Gulpin assumed that was part of a greater plan, and stood still, awaiting its next order.

Frillish's Trainer seemed to have mercy and did not order a strike on the idle Gulpin - rather, Frillish's eyes began to glow a bright blue before suddenly turning back to their original color. As the glow died, the bright sunlight appeared to fade quickly, and in its place, it began to rain. The rain was light at first, but rapidly evolved into a downpour, drenching the combatants and Trainers.
