Prebattle

Hello there, I'm a referee whose prebattle style changes every time she writes one.

Now that the introductions are over, I can tell you about the island and the two Trainers who were getting ready to make super-powered animals maul each other for glory.

The island was indeed a beautiful sight. The sun, high in the sky, was making the ocean glow golden. I had ridden my Gyrados up here to try and catch some peace and quiet, maybe do some swimming, or just lie and read beneath the coconut tree.

However, my plans were ruined soon. A speedboat carrying two arguing boys - dang boys - pulled loudly up to the island. They hopped out, ignoring me, and pull a Pokeball each out of their pockets. I groaned as I realized I was about to be treated to a Pokemon battle - and as a referee, it was my duty no matter what to make sure that the battle was fair and all that good jazz. Ready to settle their argument, the Trainers threw down. When the red light of the Pokeballs cleared, a ghostly, blue Dusknoir and a little blue-and-white serpent sat in the sand, ready to duke it out. Fisticuffs and all that. So much for a peaceful island, eh?

Round One

Mermaid wasn't particularly thrilled about facing a Pokemon whose kind was notorious for assisting Primal Dialga and nearly getting the world sealed in darkness forever. However, she wasn't about to give in. She began to retch, throat convulsing and burning as she brought a foul purple sludge into her mouth, slopped together from all the acid - and other nastiness - from her insides. She opened her mouth as wide as possible, then spat the glop of fizzing purple poison at Dusknoir. The specter had no time to dodge, and the sludge hit him right between the eyes on his belly. His face soured with agitation as the poison leached into him.
[Toxic: Dusknoir, +TOX; ImmaMermaid, -6% Energy]

Dusknoir already knew how to use poison; however, a refresher course wouldn't hurt. He began to replay Mermaid's actions in his mind: exactly how she had done what she had done. Before long, his gut began to churn and he could feel slop surfacing to the mouth on his stomach. He grimaced and swallowed - so to speak - the toxic substance, feeling annoyed. All he had learned was the way heartburn felt.
[Mimic (Failed): Dusknoir, -2% Energy]

Mermaid suppressed a sigh of relief as her opponent failed to attack. She wasn't about to do the same, however, and she knew she had to take every chance she had to gain ground on her opponent. She glowered at Dusknoir, rushing forward as fast as she possibly could. Taken aback by her ferocity - which was as strong as a Tyranitar's despite her unimpressive size - he had no chance to dodge as Mermaid slammed into him. He was actually blown back an inch or so - leaving himself with a decent bruise, and Mermaid panting tiredly.
[Dragon Rush: Dusknoir, -10% HP; ImmaMermaid, -16% Energy]

Dusknoir would love to turn this attack on his foe. He eagerly began to remember Mermaid's actions - ordinarily, his brain would be too full of new knowledge to learn again, however, Dusknoir had learned nothing from Mermaid's last move, and now he was picking up Mermaid's skill. He decided to test it out. His eye flashed, and then he let a wave of brutish anger overwhelm him. He rushed at the palm tree, making it groan in protest. A lone coconut fell, which nearly hit the random-seeming, by-standing girl nearby on the head.
[Mimic: Dusknoir, -4% Energy]

Moves: Dragon Dance ~ Protect

Looking up at her big, scary opponent, ImmaMermaid knew that she would have to get a few power boosts under her belt before even trying another attack. Draconic fury rose from her subconscious to take over her mind, guiding her into a strange dance. The serpent began to writhe as if in agony, kicking up a spray of sand around her. Blue flames poured from her mouth, creating an aura of fire. Dusknoir watched the twisting dragon, wondering if something was wrong with her – she seemed to be in pain. But ImmaMermaid was feeling a sudden surge of power course through her. This was what she had needed. Now she felt ready to go up against this ghost and any other poor fool that tried to get in her way.

Dusknoir seemed a little intimidated by this, although he wouldn’t have admitted it. He quickly decided that he needed to create something which could stand between himself and this dragon to stop it from attacking him directly. Dipping down so that he could reach the sand, he began to mould it into the shape of his own body. ImmaMermaid narrowed her eyes. What was the Dusknoir thinking? There was no way she would fall for a simple trick like that. Then, closing his eye, the spectre placed one of his hands on the sand’s “head.” Life force flowed from the creator to his created, causing the doll’s eye to open. Dratini moved back a little when the sand began to levitate, taking place next to its maker. She grimaced but wasn’t too worried – it was easy to tell the difference between them.

She wanted to attack. She wanted to give Dusknoir a taste of her newfound power, but her trainer had ordered otherwise. He wanted her to go on the defensive for the time being, which the Dratini thought was ridiculous. She wasn’t scared of this ghost no matter how scary he tried to make himself. Nevertheless, orders were orders and she wasn’t going to start trying to argue with them. She threw up a glittering blue shield between herself and the pair of Dusknoir. She focused on this wall, strengthening it where it seemed to need strengthening and making sure that it was powerful enough to shrug off whatever her opponent threw at it – not that she was expecting anything much.

Blue fire, similar to the sort that had wreathed Dratini earlier, flared up around the reaper, that’s the real one by the way. He grinned as the flames intensified, knowing that they couldn’t harm him. Pushing off his clone, he shot towards ImmaMermaid like a rocket. The dragon was surprised by the speed and power of his attack. Although he collided with the shield, he continued to strain against it, his single eye fixed on ImmaMermaid. The Dratini edged backwards, terrified by her assailant; he was more scary than she’d thought. Just as she was beginning to wonder if her shield would be able to hold him back, Dusknoir decided that he’d had enough and floated back to his companion. His glowing, red eye found his prey and he rubbed his hands together, thinking of all the ways he could hurt her when the time came.

Round Three

ImmaMermaid looked at her ghastly opponent. At last she felt it was time to attack. She slithered forward across the sand, moving as fast as she could. She was not going to stop; she was going to show this big bully of a Dusknoir what she could do! She lunged, flying through the air, her body glowing with the force of her anger and leaving red-tinged trails of white behind her. She almost connected - Dusknoir side... stepped?... at the last second. Mermaid crashed into the sand, sending a plume of the stuff into the air with a 'poof'.
[Dragon Rush: ImmaMermaid, -16% Energy]

Dusknoir glared contemptuously at the tiny serpent. He summoned up energy, feeling the heat of flames burning deep within him. The mouth on his stomach opened, and a ring of orange-and-purple flames flew from within him and at ImmaMermaid, who was just digging herself out of the sand she was buried in. As it happened, the fact that she had been buried saved her - the burnin' ring of fire sailed right over Mermaid's head. She looked up at Dusknoir, blinking in confusion.
[Will-O-Wisp: Dusknoir, -3% Energy]

Mermaid shook her head. She wasn't about to let herself be distracted - not when she needed to summon pure rage. She narrowed her eyes, letting her anger flow through her, feeling the rage of her lost Dragon Rush, and all of her lost rounds. Her eyes glowed red, and she lunged at Dusknoir suddenly. The substitute managed to block her, but the last of the clone's life was gone. It disintegrated, crumbling into dusty little flakes of dust.
[Outrage: Sub, -11% HP; Mermaid, -22% Energy]

Dusknoir smirked. Mermaid was not going to get away with that again. He clapped his hands together, making several arcs of blue, glowing energy fly out at Mermaid, surrounding her and making her eardrums fill with a horrid ringing. She whimpered and writhed; she could hardly think and her whole head throbbed. It was a bit better when the wave subsided, but Mermaid was rankled and puzzled - she had forgotten something, she knew.
