There was a deadly hush in the gym. Foxamivalth stood on his box, looking down on the lights of the arena below while his heart tried desperately to beat its way out of his chest. He took a couple of seconds to calm his breathing down before turning to look at the screen on his left. Three pokémon, a Flygon, a Gengar and a Heracross, looked back at him with expressionless faces. He nodded and began to think while his hand stretched to the poké balls attached to his belt. Having chosen which of his battlers to use, he placed three of the balls into the scanner. There was a beeping noise and then the three chosen ones, Archeops, Carracosta and Snorlax, appeared on the opposite screen. The figure on the other side of the room studied them carefully, already planning how he could bring them down. Unlike his opponent, this trainer showed no signs of fear, as if this was all part of the job for him. This was, of course, paperairy – the Gym Leader of the Terminal Gym.

He pressed one of the buttons on the control panel and his Gengar appeared in a flash of light. The phantom smiled creepily and shrank away into the shadows, where she felt more comfortable. Foxamivalth saw his opponent’s choice and quickly decided on his own. A flash of light heralded Carracosta’s arrival to the arena, where he stood shivering as the arena drained his strength. Gengar smiled as she saw the confusion on the turtle’s face; having spent long hours training in this arena she was used to the feeling of losing her power. I pressed a button so that the word “begin” appeared on both screens and settled down to watch the battle; I had a feeling that it would be a good one.

Before Carracosta could even register that the battle had begun, Gengar had begun her first move. Her ethereal body began to glow with bright, white light, which illuminated her half of the arena. Carracosta had to raise an arm to shield her eyes. The light faded away again a little while later, but there was something different; Gengar’s body now shined a little when the light caught it right. I frowned when I saw this, not sure what to make of it. But if I was perplexed then Carracosta was even more so; he tilted his head sideways while his opponent carried on grinning, confident that whatever he had just done would be enough for the time being.

Since Gengar wasn’t making another move for the time being, Carracosta decided that it was time for him to go. A stream of pink hearts flowed from his mouth, drifting through the blackness of the arena. The ghost didn’t react as they floated closer to her; in fact, she seemed to be waiting for them to come closer. It finally dawned on me what was going on and why a smile was spreading across paperfairy’s face. Instead of the hearts being absorbed when they touched the ghost’s purple body, they were bouncing off and being tainted by a black mark. Foxamivalth muttered something as the marked hearts sank into his turtle’s rocky chest. He stumbled, his want to harm the Gengar fading away rapidly. Thoughts that he couldn’t quite understand clouded his mind; he was in love with his opponent, but how was that possible? The attack had been supposed to make her fall in love with him. He could tell that something had gone wrong but had no idea what so he was only able to stand, waiting for the last of his free will to drain away.

Meanwhile, Gengar was getting ready to make things even more difficult for the ancient turtle. Closing her eyes and sitting down on the floor, she began to chant. It was a song that she had only practiced once but, like most ghost-types, knew it instinctively. A pulsing black aura began to emanate from the spectre, spiking more and more rapidly as the speed of his chanting increased. Foxamivalth’s face began to get pale when he realised what was happening. Suddenly, both pokémon were screaming as loudly as they could. And these weren’t just ordinary screams either. They were blood-curdling, bestial screams which could only be achieved when an animal is in intense pain. I shivered when I heard it, the mere sound shaking my skeleton. Carracosta slumped to the ground again soon afterwards, followed quickly by the attack’s effecter. Only Gengar appeared to have been in pain, but Carracosta did seem to be very scared. He wasn’t sure what was going on any more.

In fact, his fear seemed to outweigh his love for Gengar at the moment. He knew that he had to stop her whatever the cost. Water began to seep out of his hard skin, forming a sort of armour around him. He began to channel his energy into the armour so that it span around him in an anti-clockwise direction. It felt good to be surrounded by his natural element but he knew that the water wouldn’t be any use unless he attacked with it. The miniature whirlpool moved slowly away from its creator, who controlled it effortlessly with his mind, and towards the slumped Gengar. The vortex approached the ghost, who did nothing to dodge or block it. It enveloped her but she didn’t react at all – the pain was nothing compared to what she had just been through. Just as Carracosta thought it was over, the whirlpool bounced back from Gengar and got stuck around him. The phantom’s defensive coat was still in play, meaning that the whirlpool’s trapping and damaging effects were reflected back again. The turtle groaned, and then groaned even louder as the curse that Gengar had used on him took effect; things weren’t looking good for him and he knew it. He was going to have t work hard if he was going to win this.

Gengar moved first, her light gaseous body allowing her to strike with ease. Remembering her orders, she began to close her eyes. A beam of green energy surrounded the ghost type, illuminating the black room. It flowed in a strangely devious way, then in a split second darted towards Carracosta. He had no time to react before it crashed into his body, still tethered to Gengar. She cackled evilly, and the beam began to drain energy from the turtle. He bellowed in pain as his power was sucked into the light, filling Gengar’s body as she shrieked with glee. Her grin extended farther than usual as she watched the contortion of her opponent’s face. When it finally subsided, he looked exhausted. However, the shadow pokemon looked ready to fight some more.
(-15% Health for Carracosta, +15% Health for Gengar, -9% Energy for Gengar)

Carracosta, despite the nefarious move that his opponent had just performed, was still madly in love with her. There was something about that grin…dayum! He put these thoughts aside, and began his own move. The turtle pokemon closed his eyes and clenched his fists, focusing intensely. Three rings of brilliant white light surrounded his body, revolving at an unbelievable speed. He opened his eyes, which were now glowing neon green. The rings stopped their revolving, and they were quickly replaced with huge rings of sharp stones, which circled him just as the rings had. His arms flailed as he summoned them into the air, controlling them with his mind. For a single second, his eyes glowed even brighter as the needle thin rocks flew into Gengar, who didn’t look too happy. She was barraged with these rocks, yelping in pain. They had caused serious pain, and she was not sure how much more of it she could take. Lying limply on the ground, she did not want to get up. At all.
(-32% Health, -15% Energy)

Gengar knew that her time was limited. She could only stall as she tried to recover, or risk hurting her teammates. Fortunately, paperfairy had realized this as well. Her move was a good one; it would prevent the attack coming from hitting. Her body was quite literally made for this, and she did it well. In a burst of light, another Gengar appeared, laughing in a strangely creepy way. It flexed its claws, testing its abilities. Carracosta was a bit scared; how could he defeat two of them? However, Gengar knew that her plan was a short one; the clone was a weak one, and would probably disappear as soon as it was hit. At that point, it was good enough for her; anything to avoid those deathly stones.
(-2% Health, -1% Energy, Sub@2%)

Still fairly scared by the two opponents, Carracosta knew he had to be fearless to finish this off. However, his feelings for Gengar were just too strong to hurt her. He sat on the ground and simply stared at her, loving the way he felt just looking at her. Little did he know that this was not true love; he was simply under a ghostly spell. Both of the Gengars laughed and high fived; all was going according to plan. Then, Gengar’s curse struck her enemy. It shoved a deathly nail in his mind, hurting him considerably. His whirlpool chose to return at that moment as well, beating him with powerful currents. Carracosta was NOT a happy camper.

As usual, Gengar’s lithe body allowed her to travel first, a truly heinous plan forming in her brain. She closed her eyes and put her claw-like palms together, her usual grin disappearing. Channeling her ghostly energies, a barrage of blue rings came from her body, circling Carracosta as he stood confused. She shrieked evilly, then the rings entered the turtle. He had no idea what was going on; they did not seem to hurt. Nervously touching his face, Carracosta finally realized that really nothing had happened. He sighed, obviously relieved. The grin of his opponent had made it seem a lot worse than it actually was; well, she was always grinning. He grunted, not knowing what to do.
(Carracosta cannot use Stone Edge, -8% Energy)
Carracosta was simply happy to still be alive. He shrugged at his trainer’s meager orders, then began his move. His powerful lungs contracted as he absorbed water from his body, gathering it in his stomach. A quiet hack was followed by a huge blast of water, which seemed to shine in the black room. Gengar had no time to react before the torrent hit her torso, blowing her back into the black wall. Her red eyes seemed to water, but she shook it off and began to float, ready to get some revenge on this…thing. She knew that she was going to leave soon, but wanted to make her time remaining count. However, he didn’t realize that he had really hit the substitute; the entire thing was a sham.
(-11% Health, -5% Energy)
Gengar had the perfect plan. She would sustain her time in her home for a minor price; simply sleep for a while. To her foe’s astonishment, she sat on the ground and closed her eyes, beginning to snore loudly. She counted Mareep as she willed her tired body to sleep, relaxing her strained muscles. Carracosta stared in horror, but not for why you would think. “SNORING!?!?!?!? What a turnoff. And I thought she was pretty cute toooooo.” He thought, watching the sleeping ghost as she sat, looking lifeless. “Wait, since when did ghosts need to sleep anyways?” perplexing over these problems, Carracosta was very confused when the next turn came.
(+20% Health, -8% Energy)
Carracosta tried to perform his move, but when he did so the rings returned. They created a barrier around him, refusing to move. He pounded at them, but they wouldn’t budge. Determined to end this, he prepared his move anyways, letting the needle thin rocks attack the barrier. However, it was created especially for this; it would literally let anything but the rocks pass. Carracosta sat down, totally bummed. However, his torture was not over. The curse then struck, knocking him down for the count. Foxamivalth swore, then returned his tired Pokemon back to the ball, determined to pay for the death.

Round Four

"Go, Archeops!"

Paperfairy scowled as the rainbow-feathered fossil appeared beneath him. His plan did definitely not include having his Gengar snoozing helplessly before the Archeops. With a sigh, he exchanged the ghost for a new Pokemon: Heracross. The brawling bug.

Archeops looked disdainfully at the new arrival. After all, the insect wasn't exactly his type. Trying to shove away his squick-infested misgivings, he lifted his wing/palm to his beak and pretended to kiss it. He breathed on the wing/palm, and a pink heart inflated from the spot like some sort of magenta bubble. The heart flew at Heracross, shattering in a burst of white sparks as soon as it touched her. Heracross's vision went hazy, and when Archeops came into focus again, something seemed different about him. She suddenly noticed how handsome he was: those intense dark eyes, that fine feathered physique. She clasped her hands and released a dreamy sigh.
[Attract: Archeops, -4% Energy]

Archeops wasn't finished trolling yet. He began to hack and cough, pulling up sluices of half-digested food and corrosive bile from the depths of his organs. A poisonous, sludgy substance began to bubble upward into Archeops's beak, filling it with a burning sensation and a horrid taste. Archeops got a few hops closer to Heracross, and then spat the poisons out. Heracross, still caught in a romantic haze, was taken by surprise. She yelped as the sludge splashed over her, seeping through her shell and into her veins and filling her blood with poison.
[Toxic: Archeops, -6% Energy]

Heracross was no longer thinking happy thoughts about heart-shaped boxes of chocolates and wedding bells. Archeops was a threat that needed to be neutralized. And she was about to do some serious neutralizing. She clapped her palms together, and in front of her a ball of white energy formed. This energy, when hardened, could provide a lovely substitute for rocks. And the energy hardened. Heracross smiled deviously at Archeops. She punched the ball of energy, and large chunks of gray rock-substitute flew at Archeops. The living fossil screeched in pain as he was wracked by the barrage of stone. He fell; it took a couple of moments for him to peel himself off the floor, battered and in pain.

Love hurts, baby, thought Heracross smugly.

Archeops had a dastardly plan in his mind, and his trainer had the exact same thought. He flew around the stadium in a swift pattern, trying to distract the bug pokemon. It worked, and by the time he touched down there were two Archeops! Heracross was amazed; did he get another friend to come battle with them? That wasn’t fair! However, there was nothing he could do about it; he would just have to live with it. What he didn’t know was that the other Archeops was simply a clone; it would probably die after a hit or two. They cackled evilly as they watched the less-hopeful Heracross, who didn’t look like he wanted to be in that situation right now.
(-10% Health, -4% Energy)
Heracross didn’t know which of the Archeops to hit, so he just picked one at random and went with it. His claws began to glow a pristine white, illuminating the dark black room. He walked closer and closer to Archeops, taking his time. However, once he got close enough to touch he leaped high in the air, way above Archeops. Coming down with his fists out, he knew this was going to hurt. He reached the bird pokemon a second later, pounding it repeatedly with his rock hard fists. Smashing its wings, he laughed a maniacal laugh of glee…until he realized he had hit the clone. He fell to the ground, still covered in the smoke from its disappearance. “Well that was disappointing,” he thought, now regretting his insane behavior. Maybe he was going to need to be more careful next time…
(-11% Health, Sub Breaks! -3% Energy)
Archeops was a little confused by the huge amount of h4x his trainer wanted to use, but went along with it anyways. His eyes glowed red as he crossed his wings, looking rather intimidating. The same shade of red began to cover his entire body, simply adding to Heracross’ fright. However, at the same time he began to feel more powerful. He was confused; why would his foe power him up? The confusion only got worse as he began to hallucinate, his eyes bloodshot and crimson. He had no idea where he was, and all he could see was the shadow of Archeops laughing. Where was he? Who was the guy yelling at him? He did not like yelly-guy. Yelling guy bad.
(-5% Energy, ATK+2, Heracross=CFS)
With the newfound power inside of him, Heracross was barely able to control himself. However, his inner self told him to follow the commands of the yelling man, telling him it would be all okay. He tried to listen, hearing the words “Brick Break”. He knew Brick Break! Walking towards the weird shadow, Heracross began to swing his arms back and forth. Moving them faster and faster, his left arm began to be shrouded by a thin white light. It grew as he got closer and closer, leaving Archeops scared. He leapt up and pounded his first straight into its rock head, almost causing a critical hit. Archeops yelped in pain, taking serious damage as he collapsed on the floor. Heracross wasn’t exactly sure if he had done good or bad, but he knew it was a good hit. “Wow, I’m stronger than I thought.”

Uh...

80 at the beginning of the round
- 10 for Sub
70
sub breaks
- 24 for BB

that equals 46 for me...

this also implies that Defeatist activates.

EDIT: Actually, what the hell? BB was critical, and when I calculate it with +2 ATK (you put +3), it does 44 damage.

Heracross stumbles from side to side slightly, completely out of it from whatever it was that had just stricken her. She wasn’t even entirely clear on her perception of time, as she had just convinced herself that her last attack had been in her current state. Vaguely, through the cacophony of confusion in her brain, she hears her Trainer’s commands, and while they’re somewhat complex, she gets the general gist of what she’s supposed to be doing. A small sparkle of light appears in her hand, drawn from her own life force, and she opens her fist, allowing it to float in front of her. The tiny glimmer of life expands, stretching thin into an object of the same shape as Heracross herself, although a good deal smaller. It will absorb any incoming damage for Heracross for the time being, although it’s so very fragile that a stiff breeze could break it.

Archeops has a way around this, of course. He’s taken a hell of a lot of damage, mainly from that last critical, but he knows exactly how to turn it right back on Heracross. His body glows with a light green outline (it can’t all be reds and blues you know), and his eyes fix on Heracross-the original, mind, not the doll. Almost instantly the damage to his body is replicated on Heracross’s body. She cries out in pain as multiple lacerations and bruises identical to the ones on Archeops’ body appear, albeit in different places due to their different looking bodies.

Grinning, Archeops proceeds to make his own double, made with a lot more energy. He pours most of what he has left into the copy, creating a life-sized replica, which even looks less beat up than him. Ordinarily he would have a problem with having a copy more resilient than him, but right now he’s just glad that it can take the hits for him.

Heracross stumbles backwards, not sure of where these wounds came from and when, still fighting off the growing insanity in her head, and now dealing with the next set of unrepentantly complex orders for her next attack. It’s simply too much for her to deal with. With a cry of anguish she smashes her head against the floor, demanding the voices go away. Surprisingly, they do lessen, although that’s just from the effect of Swagger wearing off.

Archeops sets his sights immediately on Heracross’ Substitute. If it weren’t there he’d have a clean shot to finish off Heracross, but it is, and he doesn’t. With a grimace, he bursts forward in a blast of speed, sacrificing power-which he doesn’t need anyway-for quickness. He passes by the Substitute, barely clipping it with his beak, and it blasts apart in a pitiful puff of smoke.

Heracross, meanwhile, steadies herself. While that bang to the head had hurt, it had also made the voices pretty much go away, allowing her to concentrate on her mercifully simple orders. She draws her fist back and jumps forward, targeting Archeops’ face. Her hand glows with energy, and she swings it forward, striking… a copy. The Substitute jumps in the way, taking the hit and shattering from the sheer energy. While it doesn’t do jack to stop the attack, it allows Archeops to wing out of the way. Heracross isn’t done yet, though. Before Archeops can react or attack again, she twists her body, taking sheer thrill in being back in the game. She leaps up and draws her fist back and unleashes a haymaker. Archeops squawks as it strikes him in the face, but he doesn’t make a single other sound than the thump as his unconscious body hits the floor. Heracross smiles, although it’s extremely pained, as her own wounds combined with the poison flushing through her veins are taking their toll. She’ll be able to take about as much of a hit as her Substitute did.

Heracross digs her heels in and prepares for a last ditch assault. Her body has been beaten, bruised and flushed with poison, and she’s pretty much down for the count as a guarantee. But her pain can be used for her own purposes. Her body glows scarlet, stronger over her various wounds but overall ridiculously bright from the Toxic. She leaps at Snorlax, who has just recently joined the battle, and tilts her neck back. The moment she enters range, her head launches forward, and smacks directly into Snorlax’s gut, sending him stumbling backwards from the unexpected and rather immediate attack. He shakes off the surprise rather quickly, though, and while the more instantly gratifying response would be a heavy smackdown, a much better solution over the long term comes into play. A bluish-white aura rises from his body, and a matching aura quickly appears around Heracross as well. While she doesn’t feel any effect, Snorlax’s body begins altering to match Heracross’ increased power, both from her special ability and from Swagger. Once the energy fades away, Snorlax’s own power is just as boosted as Heracross’. Content, he raises his arms, generating a bright green energy bubble which will protect him until Heracross just keels over. Heracross, seeing the shield and wanting to maintain some dignity in falling, doesn’t even bother to attack it, instead just falling to her back and allowing the poison to finally overcome her, carrying her to sweet unconsciousness.

Gengar, floating in her happy cloud land, vaguely hears the command for Sleep Talk, followed shortly by a cry of rage from whatever dark and terrible god rolls the random numbers on realizing just how many moves she learns. After about two minutes of nothing while said dark and terrible god works out what the hell she’s supposed to be doing, she rolls over in her sleep (which looks really rather bizarre when floating in midair) so that she’s effectively on her back. Her mouth opens in a lazy almost-yawn, and a small ball of blue light appears in front of it. The ball flies up into the air and hits the ceiling, before vanishing into nothing. Snorlax, having watched with curiosity and no small amount of puzzlement, shrugs, walks over, grabs Gengar out of midair, and bites into her side. Strangely, she doesn’t seem to notice.

Another Sleep Talk, followed by more rage. This time Gengar rotates to an upright position and faces Snorlax’s general direction. Her mouth opens again, and this time it’s a much larger, crackling ball of yellow energy surrounded by cords of electricity. As its wielder is asleep, there is no awesome flourish to go with the Zap Cannon’s launching, which makes it even more anticlimactic when the ball goes wide. Snorlax doesn’t even have to move, it just goes straight past him and into a wall. Snorlax isn’t quite sure how he got so lucky, but it netted him a free KO so who’s complaining? He snatches up Gengar again and takes another large bite, this one on the top of the head. When he releases Gengar this time, she doesn’t even float anymore, just falls to the ground rather pointlessly.

“Er… Gengar is unable to battle… I guess…”
