Yes! It's time again for the Evolutionary Sprite Challenge!

This is a sprite contest where we will invent a new evolution for Dunsparce.

Dunsparce is a chubby little snake with a drill on the tip of it's tail that it uses to burrow into the ground backwards where it lives in a complex network of tunnels.
And you can see what appear to be immature wings on Dunsparce's back, so the sky's the limit with him.
I expect great things of Dunsparce. Like the dopey Magikarp evolves into the might Gyarados. I wanna see a truely magnificent monster manifest from this pathetic pokemon.

You have until Sunday night the 5th, at midnight to turn in your entries.
That gives you two full weekends. So, no rush jobs. Do your very best, and take your time putting a nice polish on your final sprite.

It will be a single round contest this time. In which your sprite will be graded by our panel of judges as outlined below. As well as put up for the popular vote, where every vote your sprite receives will add 3 points to your total score.

In this contest you may use existing sprites to "Frankenstein" an entry. But I would encourage you to scratch as much of it as you can. As that will be more original and net you more points ultimately.

Sprites will be judged on a 1 to 10 scale in the following 3 categories.

Color: Which covers how well the colors chosen work with the sprite & the shading of the sprite.

Composition: In the case of Frankenstiened or Semi-frankenstiened sprites this category will judge how cohesive the constituate parts are (how well it's put together) & how difficult we think it was to make the monster.
And... in the case of scratch this category covers: line art, construction (which includes: pose, anatomy, & proportion), & difficulty.

Originality: How inventive and interesting the sprite is as a whole.
Naturally scratched sprites will garner more points in this category than entries made from existing sprites, but if your entry is inventive enough it can still do very well here.

I'm going to attempt this challenge. I've always imagined dunsparce's evlution so I can finally produce it.

I do agree. He does have an amazing potential to turn into a great thing, so my entry is going to be an incredible one, not to brag.

Zeefly is a fly (obviously), because Dunsparce looks like a grub or maggot... The closed eyes on Dunsparce (suited for being underground, as dirt might get in them and stuff), open up, to allow Zeefly to see when it is flying. Because it has wings now, it has outgrown its drill tail (which was Dunsparce's way of escaping predators) for a spiked tail to skewer prey with. It now has pinchers on its head (like Pinsir), to help it eat food.

Amazing! That's a solid evolution for Dunsparce. I can't wait to see what everyone else will come up with.

Name: Dexki

Data: Due to its lack of opening its eyes when Dunsparce it has gained no need for them anymore. It now sees by detecting the heat signatures of the things around it by flicking its toungue. Its drill has changed into a rattle since it cant express through its eyes. It uses it like a rattle snake does and rapidly shakes it back and forth to tell others around it how angry it is. The small horns on its lower jaw when a Dunsparce have changed into outter fangs that can extract poison at will. This way Dexki can latch those onto its prey and kill it that way so it can smell the air for any creatures around it.

Dunsparce evolves into Lazepine, the lazy flying worm thing. Still as sleepy-looking as it's pre-evo. I'm not super proud of this thing, but I'm happy with the wings. xD

I bet Gun6 will win, that fly is awesome. xD Everyone else's are cool looking too.

Here's my first version of Dormiper, the dormant viper. The wings grew to be more of a blanket than things to fly. It still burrows. I'm going to tinker with the wings, because they look like nothing I've ever seen.

Well, here's mine... I can't say I'm proud of the build but I think the color will destract that.

Yay, dnsparce is a full-fledged flying freak, but no one is perfect. See, that's why he has no eyes on his face. During evolution, they lose all eye sight in the upper body, but that's where the tail comes in. For a while the tail is responsible for all ability to see until its senses devolep. Then it becomes a drill again. But until the it can;t go under ground because the dirt causes the eyes to go bloodshot and it has no eyelids.

I may mess with it over time. I think it's fine enough for me, but it may not get many votes.

Nice Omis... of course being a judge I can't just base it on first impressions, i mean secodn impressions can change a lot, like slipping money to me, etc....

Omis, out of all the entries posted, yours is my favorite, and for a few reasons.

First, I think it fits with the Pokemon style of monsters. I can actually see this evolution in the game, and the style matches the Pokemon feel. The shading style, and color styles matches the Advance Generation sprites well, as for TVTMaster's evolution, it looks like something I would see in Digimon.

TVTMaster's shading doesn't really fit with the Advance Generation style as much as Omis's. Plus, I think it's too dark, and too large of a sprite. (Pokemon wise)

Tabbloza's evolution is alright, but it doesn't have that Pokemon feel either. It's also a monster that I could see in Digimon. I really like the wings though, the wings look great.

RocketMeowth's evolution doesn't fit the Pokemon style that well, even though I like the shading. It looks like a monster I would see in a different anime other than Pokemon or Digimon.

gun6's evolution also fits that Pokemon style just like Omis's though, I don't like the shading that much. In my opinion, the shading could have been made more better, and just a little bit brighter. I like the pose, and the wings look alright, though the remind me of a bug's wings.


I think I'll enter once I get a solid idea in my head. ^_^;

I agree with you. Even mine doesen't look like a pokemon, but, hey, some people only focus on the quality of the sprite, but unlike them I use common sense to decide on the winner.

Slightly off topic: Well...I don't think I'll get to tweak mine today. I'm going to a Girl Scout awards ceromny which will last all day. (Bring on the french crepes!) So...I might be gone for the rest of the day,

You might want to fix the wing positioning, though. IMO, it's left wing isn't exactly where it should be.

HOLY!!! That entry is magnificent! My favorite part is its head. It looks so much more like a dragon then any pokemon I have seen. You entry is my favorite out of them all for the head of the sprite.

How long did you spend on that? It looks like it must have taken a while to do seeing as how complex and small it is.

It's a great sprite, but the connection of it's right wing (if you were the creature), is a bit awkward (maybe a bit too low and too close to the head), and the body seems to take a sharp turn when it goes up to connect it to the drill.

Color: 3/10, I really don't like the checkerboard shading method. I've seen it used successfully, but this isn't one of those times.
Composition: 2/10, Sorry, but your linework is really choppy, the color of the lines are inconsistant with the shading, and it's head & eyes are pretty misshapen.

-Denrok lives in solitary and travels a lot, rarely staying long enough to claim a territory as its own. The poison-tipped end of it's barbed tail is lethal enough to weaken a foe so much that it can fall over and wretch in pain for weeks. The wings that have developed and now the creature enjoys real flight and from the air it can dive for a dedly effect. The pincers have also developed and they can tear into flesh well. Despite this Denrok are usualy docile and try to avoid other creatures. Dunsparse evolves into Denrok at level 32. Denrok is Normal/Poison. (BTW, it might be hard to notice, but it's basicaly a scorpion with wings.)

Color: 2/10, I really dislike checkered shading, it only works sometimes in big sprites.
Composition: 2/10, The head looks mutated and most of the linework is very choppy.

Composition: 7/10, Some of the lines are messed up anad I don't like all black outlines.
Originality: 7/10, It seems like a Dunsparce/Ariados/Gligar fusion, I can't really see why Dunsparce would need to grow 8 legs.

Color: 6/10, Pretty good but I only see a few highlights.
Composition: 5/10, Linework was too staright, looks like you used the line tool and I would've liked to see some outline shading instead of it being just one colour.
Originality: 7/10, Good but I think the snake/Dunsparce=Snake thing has been done a little too much.

I always use the line tool. Its the best way to get smooth, even lines. The key is shorter segments. ^_^

Composition: 9/10, Excellent... all hunched over and sneaky...
Originality: 9/10, Very good.. there was one other similar but only one.

Color: 8/10, As the others have said, shading was a tad off. However, i liekd how the colors seemd to be closer to Dunsparces than the other participants.
Composition: 7/10, The main body is excellent but the tail is very awkward.
