Yes! It's time once again for the Evolutionary Sprite Challenge!

This is a sprite contest where we will invent a pre-evolution for Scyther.

Even natures most savage killers were once tiny babies.
Let's see what you all can come up with.
Scyther is based on a praying mantis btw.

You have until Sunday night the 19th, at midnight to turn in your entries.
That gives you a full week. So, no rush jobs. Do your very best, and take your time putting a nice polish on your final sprite.

It will be a single round contest. In which your sprite will be graded by our panel of judges as outlined below. As well as put up for the popular vote, where every vote your sprite receives will add 3 points to your total score.

In this contest you may use existing sprites to "Frankenstein" an entry. But I would encourage you to scratch as much of it as you can. As that will be more original and net you more points ultimately.

Sprites will be judged on a 1 to 10 scale in the following 3 categories.

Color: Which covers how well the colors chosen work with the sprite & the shading of the sprite.

Composition: In the case of Frankenstiened or Semi-frankenstiened sprites this category will judge how cohesive the constituate parts are (how well it's put together) & how difficult we think it was to make the monster.
And... in the case of scratch this category covers: line art, construction (which includes: pose, anatomy, & proportion), & difficulty.

Originality: How inventive and interesting the sprite is as a whole.
Naturally scratched sprites will garner more points in this category than entries made from existing sprites, but if your entry is inventive enough it can still do very well here.

Darvae

Before growing wings, it burrows underground to get around and uses its dagger-like claws to cut through hard rock. It prefers cool climates, and is rumored to be able to sniff out water in the desrt because of this. They have a rude disposition, and are not approached by many who value their lives.

I think it's the shoulder blade on the left arm. I'll be sure to tweak it.

EDIT: Tweaked shoulder, leg length, floppy spike, and blades. Any comments on the resize? I actually think shriking could become a new form of spriting. I'll show my findings in the GSS.

Name: Scnipit
Type: Bug/Fighting
Pokedex: Scnipit are left to fend for themselves from birth by the parenting scyther/scissor. This ensures that only the strongest Scnipit suvive until evolution, therefore increasing the strength of the scyther line. Scnipit are fierce by nature, and despite their small size, should not be approached under any circumstances. Scnipit hones its' skills as a ninja by fighting between its' siblings. Pokemon and trainers alike avoid any area where Scyther are known to nest, as surprise attacks are a frequent occurance. As the Scnipit grows stronger and becomes closer to evolution, the blades on its' hands grow, to eventually evolve into Scyther's scythes.

EDIT: I've decided to use the light orange coloured scnipit, as seen above.

I think the yellow is perfect. That shade of green isn't really pleasant, and the rest just don't suit him.

Color: 8/10 - I love your color choice. The contrast is nearly perfect. The shading on the legs knocked you down a point- I can bearly see it.
Composition: 9/10 - The difficulty is deffinitely up there. You have a lot a featurs in such a small package.
Originality: 8/10 - I would have never thought of anything like it. It just doesn't seem much like a pokemon.

Color: 8/10 Excellent shading, the color is a little dull, but it's a very natural looking custom.
Composition: 8/10 Very nice, very nice, the legs look kinda funny to me, but they're alright. Pose is kinda boring.

Color: 5/10 Scyther colors, The shading is too busy following the edge of the sprite to worry about where the light would actually hit it.
Composition: 6/10 The line work is a bit dark for the color in most places, and your lines are too straight most of the time. I find that straight lines almost alway look really choppy in sprites. Maybe it's just me, but it seems easier to smooth out a line if it has at least a slight curve.
Originality: 6/10 I like your character design, with the dragonfly-like backside. But the head and thorax are of an almost unaltered scyther. If you had changed it a little more this coulda been great.

Composition: 6/10 There are a lot of little things that don't exactly look to be symmetrical.

Composition: 7/10 You get a point for a dynamic pose, but lose it for funny lookin' ears... er horns, er whatever they are.
Originality: 8/10 I like it. I just think it just needs something I just can't put my finger on. It looks a little plain to me, but I guess that's alright for a baby; something to build up from, ya know.

Composition: 9/10 The big jag on it's nose bugs me but other than that you did a wonderful job on this sprite.

Composition: 4/10 It's line art isn't great: too dark, and jaggie.
Originality: 8/10 It's like nothing else in the contest. It's an interesting idea, but I don't think it's in the Scyther line.

Tauros, Miltank, & Skarmory are all good options, but lets get some more suggestions.


BTW, we haven't really done Skarmory yet.
It was Rocket who did a Skarmory evo in the final 'open' round of Evo #1.
We could still do it, but I'ld rather not when there are so many other monsters left untouched. I'm sure we'll revisit Skarmory eventually though; as well as Kecleon which Omis did that round.

How about an Eeveelution evolution contest? We would have the same amount of time with maybe two rounds. We would have to each create our own Eeveelution for a type Eevee doesn't have an evolution for.

If not then I don't really know what we could use in the next contest. Maybe a legendary evolution contest. I don't know. lol

I'm certain Nefarious would OK this contest.
But I suggest single rounds, just from my experience doing the Evos.
You could get several contests out of this though.
Grass of course, Fighting & Metal, you could even go and do like... Ice, Flying, and so on.
If you really wanted, I'm sure people would get into it. I'ld enter too if I ever have the time.

While we are on the subject of other contests. I had an idea for a new set of sprite challenges where every few weeks we would have a different animal to make a pokemon for.
You know how most pokemon are based on animals in one way or another, and there are so many great animals that have not been pokefied yet?
I think it would be just as much fun as the Evo contest, and probably even more creative because it's a cleaner slate.

[Edit: I want to do another evo this round. I think we should switch it up like evo one week, prevo the next. Right now I'm likin' Murkrow the best.

^^ I love the animal contest! It so reminded me of the one I made a long time ago at another forum thats dead now. People were to make Pokemon from animals not yet pokefied or turn a Pokemon into an animal you think it was based off of.

If we do the animal one I definatly wouldn't have a hard time thinking of some. I have a binder full of some pretty cool ideas with my favorite at the very front. I have always wanted an excuse to sprite it. lol

And yeah I could start an Eeveelution chain of contests if I get the okay. I am gonna ask and when I get my answer (if it is a yes) then I'll plan out what type will be first. As well as the rules and what not.
