I used the Eon ticket in Sapphire and went to the island. There, of course, was Latios. So I tried to catch it, False Swiping it 1 HP. Then I chucked all my Ultra Balls at it. It wouldn't stay in the ball for more than one wiggle!! So I kept on throwing balls, down through the Ultras, Greats, and Pokes, untill I had only a few Pokeballs left.
I had brought a weak-ish team to avoid killing it, and had recieved a serious beating, and had two Pokemon left. Its Recover had brought it to full health. I chucked a Pokeball for the heck of it, and CAUGHT IT. Is that weird or what? Has this happened to anyone else? Anyone?

Yes, happened to me when I went to capture Rayquaza. I spent twenty minutes on my sapphire version trying to catch the damned thing using the tactic of paralize and put to sleep, weak hitting moves and finally use ultras to bring the thing in (I used over 30 balls). However when it came to ruby here is the exact battle commentary;
Rayquaza appeared!
Go! Montraz!
Rayquaza used FLY!
Hanzaemon used GREAT BALL!
Rayquaza was caught!
I honistly think that the game knows you know and will/won't let you capture monsters on a whim.

I guess practice makes you perfect when it comes to throwing pokeballs, or it could be because you were lucky that time.
Pokemon has a lot to do with luck.
By weakening it, you are only increasing your odds of catching. By adding a status problem, you are increasing the odds even more.
No matter what the odds are, there is always a chance for it to be caught.
You probably had a better chance of finding a shiny, rather than catching a legend at full health(With a pokeball). Lucky XD

Lol, i suppose it's the beauty of the capure rather than the method, or perhaps there is certain coding or something which randomly allows you to capture the moster with whatever you are using. Perhaps when X (the pokemon) ='s Y (A certain status, time, health, whatever) there is a 100% likelyhood of capturing the monster. Perhaps I'm wrong and there is just a fluke but concider it; pokemon in the wild are encountered at random.

Uh, hello? It's a legendary. Of course they're going to be more difficult to catch than most Pokemon, even if it is on very low health.

the pokeball just gives a certain percent of capture.
so lets say a pokeball has a 1% chance of catching a LV50 latios. a great ball would have 1.5%, ultraball 2%, etc then when you get to those special balls, 3%.
so lets say you threw about 70 pokeballs in total, only 1 (maybe not even) would nail the catch.
its all chance really, its just that the paralysis and stuff helps a bit.
i tried a test like this on ho-oh in my fire red version. i brought around 300 pokeballs with me and just threw one each turn until it struggling, and my 150th caught it with about 97% health left. then to check again i just turned my game on and off so i could battle it again.
then i tried to weaken it with paralysis and brought it down to low hp with lugia that i had caught before. on my 50th pokeball i caught it i think, or something like that.

Evan caught Kyogre with a great ball. Here's the trick: You have the best chance of catching it when its in yellow, right before turning red, and using a great ball. That is freaky, but thats how Evan caught Kyogre and I caught two of the regis.

So there is definatly an art to the timing of a capture - perhaps I should just start waiting 50 turns until I start throwing pokeballs.

No, it's utter randomness. There are a certain set of numbers that mark your chances and weakening the pokemon hghtens your chances. I caught Rayquaza with about three pokeballs without weakening him.

but Pokemon is never random. Almost never, anyway, and definetly not random when it comes to the Pokeball system. bleep was right.

If it wasn't random, then people would have been able to work out an almost full proof way to capture all pokemon by now.

it is random--but only random from a set of percentages for each level of HP. when at, say, 70 HP, the set of numbers that the success rate is drawn from is different than if at 68 HP. though probbably not by much.
did I lose you?

Nope, I understand. I'm just saying as I was under the impression you thought it wasn't random. My bad.

It seemed obvious to me. The whole one ball per pokemon thing..

()ne time I was against rayquaza i had it down in red and almost the end of its health (literally i barely saw any red at all). Then i used 3 ultras he heald i weakened him and put him to sleep then used 3 more so on for about 25 times. Then i ran out of ultras and started using my 10 greats 3 premiers 60 normals when i had about 10 normals left i caught the dang thing at last!
-][ say its all random there is no possible system because another time i caught rayquaza with 5 normal pokeballs!
-|\|othing is predictable in any pokemon game except the basic storyline and the levels moves and stats of trainer pokemon.
-[)id I forget anything?

well there are lots of factors involved in breeding that are not compleatlyrandom, like IVs being passed on, they are still pretty random though. i suppose the breeding moves and the no. of steps you have to take are pretty much pridictable.

I hate the percent chance thing when it comes to catching pokemon. When I was trying to catch Groudon, I kept using the Sleep combo. Never worked. Until I said, "that's it. I'm going to leave and try using another strategy" and it was my last confrontation with Groudoon so it was at full health and I just threw an ultra ball for the hell of it and viola, he was caught at full health. This percent chance thing really pisses me off.

I got groudon down to 1 health (without false swipe may I add) and he was asleep. I threw an ultra ball and he broke out. I then realised that the battle had gone on for about 40 minutes, so I threw a timer ball. And he still broke out. Now, I was ever so slightly pissed. And to annoy me even more, he had no moves and had to use struggle, therefore taking health off him and making him feint. I was quite literally almost at the point of tearing my hair out. I come back, wear him down to about halfway healthwise, throw an ultra ball and catch him. I swear, if there wasn't a seat behind me, I would have collapsed.

Haha that's so awesome
It's weird yet I'm not surprised. I once caught Mewtwo with a Great Ball  At the time I never carried around Ultra Balls because I hated them. It was my first time playing Blue Version and when I saw another and more expensive form of pokéballs I got pissed and refused to use them :ermm: but this is also when Mewtwo got frozen... My Blastoise used Blizzard I believe it was and he got frozen and basically I just kept throwing Great Ball after Great Ball.

Hated.....Ultra Balls? Well anyway this should be locked, its got enough. Unless someone doesn't want it to be? Mods, wait to see if someone objects, and if they don't lock it.

Like someone said earlier, (can't remember name, please forgive me) let's say that the Pokeball has an 70% chance of catching a Pokemon that is in the level range of 20- and a Great Ball has a 55% range with Pokemon in a level range of 35- and the Ultra Ball has a 80% chance with Pokemon 60-, I may be off but I'm just guessing.
The percentage will always stay the same, but catching it with a Pokeball, let me show a scenario...
Your at Southern Island and you attempt to capture the Latios...
Wild Latios Appeared.
Go (fill in blank)
"Okay... let me fastforward a bit to show my point"
So now Latios is on the verge of going into the red and is sleeping
Since you have say about... 2.5% chance of catching it, which is now about 5% with low HP and a status condition, you continue throwing it say about 50x and you still have 5% so it is a game of luck/randomness, whatever you want to call it if you still have the 5% chance.
I am open for any objections, complaints, this is just my opinion.
