Well i guess they could see a hurt one in the wild and they could help it heal and it would become their friend and would fight for them.

Both of those are the unoriginal ways of a trainer getting a pokemon ie, they were both used on the anime and have been done to death. Readers often run for the hills when they see both...

I'd say just think a bit, you do not have to have someone else tell you what to do, you have a good head on your neck and do not need someone elses original ideas\plots\character profiles to get you going.

The beganing it always the hardest, but a good idea to get you started is this:

Think of pokemon as normal farm\pet animals.
Now, in the real world, what are the many different ways one can get a pet ;) ?

They could have it from growing up, maybe get it from their parents, older brother/sister. Who says the reader has to even know how they get it? The story doesn't have to begin with the pokemon and the beginning of a journey.
