View Full Version : Random, Somewhat Stupid Idea

What if we went further than the Pokedex?

Not just a quick sentence or two about the Pokemon, an in-depth, encyclopedia-esque entry. It would list everything possibly known about the Pokemon, sprites, moves, etc. It would be a ton of work, but I would contribute (me, loving to do research and writing reports). Problem is that it would need its own site, probably, since it would be so big.

It's really far-fetched, but it just stumbled into my mind recently.

Psypoke has everything that any Pokemon-lover would ever need, pretty much. Images, basic info, Pokedex entries, where to catch the Pokemon, breeding info, training guides, etc.

But you have a great idea there. ;)

Good luck doing that with 300+ different pokemon. You should go ahead and do it, then come back when you're finished...

I think the Pokedex we have is just fine. It's quite helpful, and so easy to access/navigate. Even nublets like me can figure it out.

Why not do a wikipedia style thing, where anyone can update the entries?

I could set up a temporary wiki if you're interested, we can give it a try.

A poke-Wiki has been done(Bulbapedia), so i don't know if we should try it or not.

Ah, alrighty.

I was messing around with wikis, and most of the free ones just totally suck. It's nowhere near as easy as Wikipedia's system is (but Wikipedia is too complex, in my opinion). Oh well.

If you were to look up any of the Pokemon up on Wikipedia, you'd find detailed accounts of each one already.

I agree.
If it ain't broke, why fix it?

Just a quick sidenote, i used to spout off about corrupt mods around here, but i quickly saw how it COULD be after spending about 24 hours messing around with Smogon. [end transmission]

Pe2K PokeDex. Is. Just. Fine.

It's already good, I will agree. But I'd like to say.. I think a site that was a dedicated pokedex with locations, maps of the areas where they are found, etc, would be great, and a Wiki would be great. I want to reserve Pokepedia.org someday. :p A wiki for all things pokemon. ^_^

I was just saying, I think it'd be great to have a Pokemon site dedicated to ONLY Pokemon that was a wiki.

Hmm...I never favored Wiki for edutainment purposes. Sure, it saved my butt for my Titanic report (and it'll probably do it again in the near future), but for some reason, the format irritates me...

I'm definitely a picky one.

Ah, but my friend, one does exist

Bulbapedia

No clue on the url.

bulbapedia.com is a safe bet, but i'm not sure.

Yeah, keep plugging BulbaGarden.
It shows where you come from.

WELL, I personally looked at Bulbapedia and it's not nearly as good as other sites I've seen. I'm just trying to say that it would be an entertaining project to do (at least, for me), and it would only help PE2K's reputation. What do have to lose?

Precisely. I am not a huge fan of the wiki format either (all of the wiki scripts look almost identical to each other). I do think it'd be nice to have a completely customized, well designed site that everyone could contribute to.

Edit: I looked at bulbapedia and it uses the Wikimedia site. Too overdone, no stylization to it.

I think we need a different wiki application, such as Sinapse Lite (http://sinapseaddict.4lifenet.net). There is a new version of Sinapse Lite, but it's still being worked on.

Well, the problem there is that if we let anyone edit whatever they want, then we're going to have to deal with vandalism and abuse and false information and....well, I could go on. And since there are different theories on different Pokemon, people are going to say 'I'm right and you're wrong'. Not saying we shouldn't continue, just pointing that out.

Nope. I do have an account there(which i don't use), but I joined PE2K long before then.

That would be bad. There are such thing as Pokemon haters, they go around saying innapropriate things about Pokemon and its fans. I once had to deal with one, you don't want to know the things they said. <_<

Meh. As Pokemon fans, it's our job to moderate the wiki if it were to exist. I'd say if we were to try it, we'd need to get used to vandals. I'm suprised there's not more on this forum. But then again, there's a great moderation team that deals with that stuff before we do.

Anyways, it'd be up to the community to manage it anyways. Most wiki systems feature a revision system that lets you load from a previous copy of it, before the vandalism occured.

I wonder if I should've made a poll about this. Frankly, I'm surprised that this topic got a few replies.

I'm almost done with basic Bulbasaur information. It's taken me a while to horde stuff, and, while I've researched things myself, I admit to using a few different things from other sites.

Oh, a sinner am I...

(Sorry, I just saw the Da Vinci Code with my mom...)

ELMO, I didn't mean I thought vandals and haters to mess up everything. I doubt that would happen. I don't doubt a Wiki could be done, if it were I would be willing to help with it. You are the one who made PE2K radio, so I don't doubt you could pull this off.

NextGenAutheress, don't be afraid to get information from other sites. As long as they are credited in a bibliography, you should be fine.

Hmm. I'm writing all this in Word, but I think I'll be able to code a few things.

Unless we have to totally start from scratch.

Well, I've been experimenting with Wikis, and I'm still looking for a good one (phpWiki and phpKiwi are too plain, and some others I tested are very stupid, like no button to create a new entry). I'll be sure to let you guys know if I have a test up and running.

I'm not going to take any credit, so don't think me hosting this wiki or site or whatever would change anything. It'd still be PE2K's, but I'm not going to brand it "PE2K" anything until TMI people have a fiesta and decide it should be done.

If someone thinks it should be added to PE2K, so be it! I'll hand over the files and the mySQL data backups to Ryan and let him have a field day!

Well, always remember that Ryan's technically God here and if he says that it's retarded, then...well, the idea's screwed up and put in the garbage can along with all the censored Pokemon anime stuff.

Precisely my point. If he doesn't like it, I can trash it or side-project it to my PokePreserve project.
