[WaR] Trivia Section

Ah, every year or so, the WaR (which as we all know, stands for We Abhor Ryan) comes up, and every year, there's a silly section which offers a quick point or two to the ultra war-crazy freak with a few minutes on his (yes, his) hands to do the arduous task of searching Google.

So essentially, a typically easy section, right? Google skills, look up some articles in Wikipedia, reference basic pokemon sites... Quick point for the obsessive competitor who is willing to do the mundane.

Cracka please! Would I ever do something like that? This season, I'll be testing not only your knowledge of pokemon (general, TCG, anime, games, maybe even manga, etc), but also common knowledge that anyone above the age of three should have, in the form of questions concerning Literature, Mathematics, the Sciences, History, and the Fine Arts. Of course, there will also be various Pot Pourri-type questions.

Team Leaders or Designated Members may PM me with the answer. A Team Leader may designate as many (or as few) members as he/she wishes. Beware, each team, no matter how many designated members it has, may only submit ONE attempt. Yes, ONE attempt per week.

In order to designate a team member, the team leader must appoint him or her. This can be done at any time. All one needs to do is PM me, clearly saying that a certain team member is designated.

PM Format: (for the weekly answer)

Subject: [WAR] Trivia; Week One (1)
-------------------------------------------
Team Name
Final Answer: Insert Final Answer Here

The answers are due by Saturday, 1:00 PM BST (8:00 AM EDT, 5:00 AM PDT) of any given week. Any answers given beyond that time will not be considered.

The question of any given week will be posted either late Saturday or sometime Sunday.

Whichever team submits the CORRECT Final Answer FIRST wins. If more than one team obtains the final answer, ONLY one team will win (obviously, the team that sent it first).

If you cannot find the Final Answer, you may give me the farthest answer you were able to reach (in the format, [Letter]: _________). However, this will only matter if nobody is able to reach the final answer. If that situation arises, I will see if anyone obtained the correct answer to the 2nd to last part. Then the 3rd to last. And so forth. If you answer a section further along than another team, but you get it wrong, and the other team got their easier question right, they win. If both of you answer the same section correctly, the team which PMed me first wins. Ah, a dilemma, no? Try for the next section? Or just submit the one you have now? Yes, you may only submit ONE section in your single attempt. You may not submit parts A->N and the final answer. If you do, no matter how correct A->N are, I will only look at whether or not the final answer is correct.

Ah, and now, for a little fun. If you answer a section other than the final answer correctly, and it's the farthest that any team got, and you submitted it first, you get a point.

HOWEVER! If nobody achieves the final answer for a given week, one point will be deposited into the "point bank." A team will only be awarded the contents of the "point bank" if they answer the FINAL answer correctly (and are the first team to answer it correctly). Thus, on the first week, the maximum point value is obviously 1, since no additional points are in the "point bank." However, if nobody gets the final answer for week 1, then one can potentially get TWO points for week 2 (the point for winning & the point from the point bank), and ultimately upto 5 points for week 5 (assuming nobody gets the final answers, ever). However, at least one point WILL be awarded each week; for example, if nobody gets the final answer, the next-closest team will always get that single point, just not the ones in the "point bank."

To HKim: This means that at max, I'll distribute 9 points over 5 weeks (one for the first four weeks if nobody gets the final answer, and 5 for the last week), but that is highly unlikely that nobody will get the final answer for 4 weeks straight (unless a team is deliberately not giving the final answer... oooooh)

Note: It is possible (albeit rather difficult) to get the final answer WITHOUT doing all of the parts, but this requires good reasoning skills, so if you manage to succeed, you deserve the point anyway.

[i]!! Sabotage/espionage is allowed; it's their fault for not hiding their progress, or allowing a spy to see what they have. However, this of course could be abused by feeding false info to a suspected spy. I guess it would be best just to stick to your own team. Unless of course, the spy on your team is pretending to be smart and instead feeding you false logic. Ooooooh. Mindfuсk.

Part B: Here is a cropped portion of a famous painting: http://img108.imageshack.us/img108/812/paintdt6.jpg . It is only cropped. Unrotated, unflipped, undistorted. Let b be the year in which this piece was created.

Part C: Here is a horrible bridge design: http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/2782/badbridgede2.jpg . All of the members are numbered. Assuming that all members are solid, of equal diameter, and of identical material, add up the numbers of the members under the 1st, 7th, and 11th highest compression forces (relative to the strength of their respective members). Let this sum be c

Part D: Let d be equal to the greatest integer less than or equal to (a * b * c)^(4/5)

Part E: img156.imageshack.us/img156/4316/dpx3.jpg

The above is an incomplete URL. Replace the d in the url with the actual value of d. Look at the picture. There is a prominent organism there. Look at only the prominent organism. Let e be this organism's genus and species, except all in lower-case letters and without the space in between.

Part F: img98.imageshack.us/img98/9355/efm2.jpg

The above is an incomplete URL. Replace the e in the url with the actual value of e. Look at the picture. There is a prominent organism there. Look at only the prominent organism. Let f be this organism's genus and species, except all in lower-case letters and without the space in between.

Part G: img146.imageshack.us/img146/745/fyw5.jpg

The above is an incomplete URL. Replace the f in the url with the actual value of f. Look at the picture. There is a picture of someone. That person was obviously born somewhere. Let g be this person's birthplace.

Part H: img91.imageshack.us/img91/9193/gca2.jpg

The above is an incomplete URL. Replace the g in the url with the actual value of g. Look at the picture. It's a cropped portion of a pokemon card. However, unlike the other pictures, this one has been modified (hey, we're up to H, what do you expect?). Let h be equal to ( ((Sum of the power of all attacks) * (card no.) * (HP) + (weight in lbs.) + (card no.)) * c )

Part I: img63.imageshack.us/img63/5182/hrs4.jpg

The above is an incomplete URL. Replace the g in the url with the actual value of h. Look at the picture. It is a screenshot of a pokemon episode. According to Serebii, this is Japanese episode i

Part J: Imagine a circle of radius i + 3. In this, two chords that are 2i units long intersect at an imaginary point. This point is (i-3)/2 units from the center. These two chords divide the circle's interior into 4 separate regions. Of these, two are bordered by segments of different lengths, and the area of either could be expressed uniquely as xπ - y(z)^(1/2) where all variables are positive integers, and z isn't divisible by the square of a prime number. Let j = x + y + z

Part K: Let k be equal to j once converted to base 6

Part L: Let l = a + b + c + d + (the number of letters in e) + (the number of letters in f) + (the number of letters in g) + h + i + j + k

Part M: Let m be equal to l once converted to base 4

I wish I could laugh and say that it's easy, and it's no problem, and that anyone should be able to get it.

But I can't. I mean, if I was working on it on my own with no help at all, Parts A, B, M, and Final Answer would take me several hours to completely figure it out. (If I figured it out at all that is).

Of course, you guys have a week to do it, with several team members, as well as wonderful resources such as Google and Wikipedia (and while they may not give you a direct answer, you may be able to figure it out with instruction)

Current Point Bank: 2 (Max Potential Points: 3)

Special EDIT!! I specifically remember that Harry alotted me a maximum of 10 points over 5 weeks, and currently I'm only using 9 max. However, since I didn't give out any points at all this week (since nobody entered), I'm upping the point bank to 2. Which means, the max potential points for next week is 3. (This still means that the maximum amount of points I give out is 9. Reason it out if you want ;P)

Just for the curious. the final answer. you had to go to frame 25, take out the background white, take out the scribble white, then you get another scribble. IT says MEW, not MCW. Then, if you flip it 180 degrees, it turns into Muk.
