Welcome, reader/writer of pokemon fanfiction, to the PE2K Beta Company.

Section I: Introduction

A beta reader (or betareader) is a person who reads a work of fiction with critical eye with the aim to improve grammar, spelling, characterization, and general style of the story prior to release to the general public.

Section II: Notes

Admittedly, I’ve taken this from another board (two actually – Pokemon Fan Universe and BulbaGarden). But PE2K will benefit from this thing for sure.

There are some authors out there, especially newer ones, that aren’t very experienced and don’t realize they may be making simple, fixable mistakes. It is a beta reader’s job to do that for the author. They try to point out as many mistakes and flaws as possible and give the writer possibilities for fixing it.

Section III: To Apply

To be a beta reader:

Read the rules carefully and then fill out the form. E-mail or pm me the form and if I approve of it, I will pm or email you back to tell you to post it here. It will serve as your profile. Edit it when those facts change.

To get a beta reader:

Read the below rules carefully and then post your request here. If you want a specific person to beta your fic, email or pm them, do not post it here.

Beta Rules:
1. English means both American and Britain variants.

2. A beta reader MUST understand characterization (including Mary Sue make up), as well as parts of plots, action, description, and other story elements.

3. Unless pointing out grammar or spelling errors, DO NOT FORCE a write to change his or her story. You can make suggestions. You can use their story as an example for do’s and don’ts. You can repeat advice to emphasize importance. However, you cannot say anything along the lines of the following: You’re story is totally wrong. Instead of (insert plot point here), write (insert plot point here). Don’t do this.

Exception: Feel free to force an author to use spellcheck – be it Words, Works, or the E-mail one, as well as read up on all rules of grammar.

4. E-mail or pm your application to me. Do not post until I have responded stating that you are excepted.

5. Feel free to be blunt.

6. If you have read and agree with these rules, write this as the title: xXBetaFrostXx when you send your application via e-mail or pm.

Writer Rules:
1. Please apply to only one or two beta readers at a time. One will be the limit, unless the company is not busy and the second beta reader agrees to be a second one.

2. Do not harass beta readers. We understand you want your story up quickly, but quality matters. The beta readers are taking the time they see fit to make your job as the writer as easy as possible. Also recall that we beta readers have lives.

3. If you are unsatisfied with your beta reader(s), e-mail or pm me, Sceptile Frost. Please include the message or interchange that you received that made you feel thus. If your claims are found truthful, you shall get another beta reader as soon as possible and you will be refunded.

4. Do not abuse #3. I will investigate claims such as these thoroughly. If it is just because he or she told you to improve it and that it wasn’t very good, pointing out what needed to be fixed, he or she has done what he or she is required of. Should this occur you shall be terminated from beta readers and shall not be able to enter your writing to be beta’d until you have served your probation period, a length I shall decide.

Writing History: I began writing in third grade with a horribly done sports story. I wrote my first pokemon fic, Now and Forever, when I was eleven and posted it December of 2005 here when I first joined to discover it was crap. However, after a complete rewrite, it has really come alive.

Writing History: I've been writing ever since I've been in fifth grade. My fifth grade Language Arts teacher got a haiku of mine published in the local newpaper, and in an Anthology I can't currently remember. Also, she got one of my short stories published in the Anthology of Short Stories (Edit. 2003 Vol. XXX). After that, most of my writing has been relatively centered with class assignments, though every once in a while, I hit a spur that gives me this awesome idea, but it fades after a week (I was working on a twenty one page story, but I lost on of the pages, and I trashed it all, finding the missing page the following day...

Writing History: Started off really getting into story writing in my Freshman year of high school, starting with a short story called “Seron,” which was honestly pretty shabby. Shortly after that came “Wings of Virtue” and “The Rainbow Halo,” back in a time I had a strange obsession with angels. “Wings of Virtue” ended up being completed, the results in my opinion were just so-so. “The Rainbow Halo” never met completion and never will. Both of them were set in a Medieval time period, but brought very little of anything new to the table. Plotline also left something to be desired.

Once high school was done, I then moved on to college and started writing “The Forgotten Five,” a short, 100-page story about the lost children of the legendary bird Phoenix. Now this, actually had a great storyline and an excellent ending, but I ruined it with a crappy sequel that I never finished. Big mistake.

Shortly after, around Sophomore year, I wrote “Twisted Fate,” which was designed to be humorous and comical story, but when all was said and done, it ended up being kind of stupid when I reread it. The story was about five friends who find themselves in the most ridiculous of situations, magically turned into flower dancers by an evil and corrupt fairy (now you can see where this got stupid). Was about 350 pages long in MS Word, the biggest story I’ve ever written, besides Trial of Juno II. I don’t consider it a waste of time as much as… a place to figure out what went wrong to improve.

After that came “The Silver Talon,” which started off fantastic and really plowed on strong and had a great storyline, one being of a war of religions rather than just lands, the religion of Arrowsaw against the Seto religion. Also, hidden among their ranks was the mysterious “Dracos,” which were actually pure-blooded dragons under a human disguise (inspired by the “Brood” in Breath of Fire) I loved writing this for the longest time and then it hit lethal hole and I found it hard to keep the story progressing, until it eventually became impossible to write.

And then, around senior year or so, I started writing “The Black Sands,” (I’m not 100% sure on the name, I haven’t looked at that one in a long time) which started off about a group of gun-loving raiders called the Blackblades that get overthrown by a country that loves nothing more than being locked in it’s Medieval time period state, and uses the all-seeing Equinox (A being without any physical form) to tear apart their enemies. Shortly after, the Blackblades are forced to join one of the last military organizations alive, simply because of a mystical being called “Lesalas,” a creature very similar to Lugia who has the power to block out Equinox’s powers. A good and original idea, but never finished. To me, I had a quick and easy way to end the story but it would have been pretty abruptly. Also… I made the painful mistake of making way too many characters.

When that was said and done, I found PE2K and started writing Pokémon fan fiction instead. A few fics popped up here and there but none of them compared to what Trial of Juno I and II had become. “Road to Palantria” came close but never finished, something from the story screwed up the plotline. I then tried to rewrite Road to Palantria as “Legacy of Darzaras,” just without the Pokémon this time. It’s doing okay, a little stuck in the mud at the moment but it can get back into gear again.

And now, I’m writing “Black Rescue Team: Genesis Beyond” as the new story I’m working on, based on the upcoming Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games. And the point of this writing, it’s about 29 pages and still going on strong.

Member of GPS: No, and I really should be…
Preferences: My preference on Beta writing would be to read Adventure/Fantasy fan fictions, since… as you can see above, I’ve worked on them for so long, even if some of them never got done. Many of them required me to discover the hard way how important it is to keep plotline in mind when writing a story, and Trial of Juno I and II really told me “Yep, you’ve got it now.” Since it’s the genre I love and that I have plenty of experience writing, I’d rather Beta read those kinds of stories.
Hates: Trainer/Journey Fan Fictions. To me, I’m so used to reading and writing stories of Adventure/Fantasy nature, and the big thing I dislike about Trainer/Journey fan fictions is they all seem to be the same, and seem to be far too common.

I always got high marks in Reading and Langauge Arts classes, and writing is one of the things I do most in my spare time.

I didn't start actually working on fanfics, though, until sometime around a year or so after Pokemon came out. Before that, I didn't watch much anime, and didn't even know what fanfiction was. But I slowly got into it, and now fanfictions are my preferred style of writing. However, I do a lot of original things as well, though I don't post them for various reasons.

Read the rules, please. You can get one or TWO beta readers, not four. Since the company isn't busy at the moment, at least I don't think we are, you can ask for two beta readers. But come on, be realistic. We have other fics to beta, not just yours....

SF is right. I think the highest rating we're allowed to have is like, T-17. And even then, Ryan prefers us to not go above PG-13. Remember, there are younger visitors to this forum. Make sure to give all your fics a clear rating and include things like violence, language, and gore in the description.

Immortality. How many have gazed at me with envious eyes for this so called gift? The ability, through no fault of my own, to never age, never fear that I will not see the oncoming day. To watch as your loved ones age and die while you remain young. To weep as all that you have strived to create, crumbles to dust at your feet.

I have been here since the beginning, since the creation. I watched the unrivalled fury of nature unleashed upon the world, bubbling angrily and exploding in outrage. I watched the first drop of water fall to the steaming surface of a river of fire, cooling it for a single second, a second that seemed to last for ever. I don’t know how I came to be. I just remember opening my eyes for the first time, and knowing what I had to do.

I was the one who gave life to the first creature of this world. My home. I have watched over it, cared for it, soothed its worries and mended its hurts. I’ve loved, I’ve lost. All for this.

Words fail me as I gaze upon the destruction. Fires, different from the beginning, rage over the land, eating away at the hollowed shells that were once dwellings. The once glorious seas, sickly with age, crawl away and throw themselves into the fiery chasms that split the earth. The sky is in turmoil: Black thunderheads wage war on the noxious, yellow gasses that escape from deep underground, covering the lungs and suffocating you with its foul poison. Even heavens guardian is gone; the moon shattered; its jagged edges similar to those that frame the fallen pieces of my heart.

I remember when the world was young, how I laughed and played in the new sprung rivers and streams, dancing under the eaves of the maple I’d claimed my own. Everything was new: taste, sound, smell, touch, and sight, oh, the wonderful sights! I saw the first rainbow; I marvelled at the deadly beauty of the glaciers, I watched the first flower bloom. Everything was fantastic: the berries sweet, the water crisp and cool. Lazy days of sunshine, dancing in the falling rain... What memories I have. To me back then, the world was a candy store. But as I matured, I grew to understand that I was not meant to be alone in this wonderful place. So I created life.

Before that moment my power had lain dormant, unneeded but close to the surface, in easy reach. I drew a little of my power, the size of an oak sapling and stood it before me. I was planning to create another like me; the instructions clear in my mind as if I had always known them. I was to shape the creature before giving life to it. So I did.

Smoothing, patting, rounding, I worked the magic like clay. I could see it clearly before me as grey as stone, dead and lifeless. Slowly a shape emerged, a simplified version of myself, with large, rounded off ears, a small, tubby body. Tapping into my telekinetic power I gave it eyes and a nose, a mouth. Squinting, I focused on creating each individual hair. Hours past, it was approaching nightfall when I finally finished it. Going to the river, I scooped up water and suspended it in mid air, carrying to the figure. Closing my eyes I saturated my breath with power and breathed on the liquid, causing to sparkle like the stars far overhead before covering the figure.

Color, flesh, fur; they sprang up under the waters touch and spread down like a wildfire, crackling slightly with the power. I watched with baited breath as my creation came to life, stirring and muttering feebly. The water reached its feet and sank into the ground, each seed that it came in contact with bursting open and growing at amazing speeds, raising trumpeted heads triumphantly to the sky. The golden fire faded, leaving the small quivering figure. Its ears twitched, turning this way and that, and it seemed to be gathering up its courage. Cautiously it opened a sparkling, golden brown eye.

It was a strange creature, with muddy pink fur with odd pink splotches appearing here and there. It tottered around on its two feet as if it was on the verge of falling over; I must admit, I was not a very good sculptor. But what skills I did have would have to do. I walked around it, examining it from all angles. I had forgotten its tail in my excitement, which worsened its balancing problem. I felt sorry for it, patting it carefully on the back, and floating back to its front. It had watched me the entire time, eyes wide with fear. I smiled, trying to reassure it. It seemed to work, its eyes slowly closed so it didn’t look so scared. Opening its mouth, it ran its tongue nervously over its teeth before trying to speak for the first time.

“Wher… Whe.. Where am I?” It managed to ask, looking around with wonder in its eyes. I smiled again.

“Earth,” I replied, happiness clear in my voice. I had done it! “Welcome to life, little one! What is your name?

“I… I… Don’t know…” It managed to say, head lowering. It obviously felt sad that it didn’t even know its name. Poor thing. I could barely understand what it was saying; it was speaking in a foreign tongue. I had to use my telepathic power to divulge the meaning.

I tried to find a way to reassure it, thinking through the possibilities. Of course it knew its name, it just had to find it…

“Think hard, young one. Try and remember something from before here.”

It frowned with concentration, forehead wrinkling.

“I remember… I remember… Light? Yes, lots of pure, white light…” It closed its eyes to help itself remember. Its eyebrows suddenly shot up, and its eyes snapped open, and a smile began to twitch up the corners of her mouth. “My name! I know my name! It’s… Sp…in…da! Spinda! My name is Spinda!” It started to jump up and down excitedly, barely able to contain its excitement. I smiled, remembering my first hours on the world.

Gone. Happiness, childish innocence, all gone; drowned by the sands of time. I will never forget how I felt that day, the joy and glee I felt as I greeted my new friend. I never discovered the origin of its name, but does that matter? No. For years we lived together, playing, talking, or just simply staring up at the periwinkle sky. With her, I created many more creatures, each as wonderful as the last. But they refused to stay, disappearing into the depths of the forest, or diving into the deep waters of the seas. After Spinda, I always created two, so that the specie could continue. I created Spinda a husband; they lived in a cave near my tree. Until that, final, horrible day. The day she died.

I was alone again.

I can’t remember how long I cried. Just dim, miserable memories of hiding away in my home, isolated from the outside world. Remembering what once was. I can still see her face, even now. It was a fate worse than death.

By the time I emerged from my despair, many years had passed. Those creatures I had created had spread, populating the planet. Some had died out, which hurt me, but most remained. It seemed that I was not the only guardian, there were many more, scattered across the land. I was glad. I was not certain if I could yet deal with this new world.

A section of a story I haven't gotten around to finishing. XD

Well, I have two things I need Beta read... Not right now but perhaps in a week on one, and two weeks on the other - from now.

The first, is a new chapter from Metamorphosis - this fanfiction is in second person and present tense- just a warning to those who don't like that type of fiction... no other warnings really.

The next is a one-shot called Monster - it's in the Horror Genre, with some scenes some people may find a little disturbing. (No, it's not hack n' slash horror, if that's what you're worried about.)

I dunno if asking for these two will be above the quota - but Monster will likely not be finished for at least two weeks, I just need someone to Beta it whenever they can. If it's going against the 'two beta' rule with this, you can rule Monster out and I'll wait and request again. XD

Well, since there doesn't seem to be much activity, apart from me doing Katie's, Katie doing Saffire, and Hahaha still doing DE?, there isn't much.

What I want is just a beta reader for a one-shot I've almost completly written.
