after you recieve ur pokedex and have atleast 2 pokemon then ur good to go!

I don't know when you can trade, but when you do get a pokemon outside of FR or LG, your pokedex automatically updates to the National Dex.

So I'm seeing a flaw... if you can trade between fr/lg early on, and then later between ru/sa then just trade to a national game and then between early on, unless you can only trade when you get the national dex which I doubt... sounds like I can still get my guys in there early on... also does it go the other way, if I beat fr/lg do I have to do something on ru/sa to be able to trade?

To be able to trade with Ruby you have to venture out to Island 1 where you get the Ruby plate which lets you trade with Ruby.

I think it's the same thing with Sapphire. Cause you have to venture out to Island 3 (I think) where you save this girl from Hypno.

I thought it was too complicated to explain how to get the Sapphire Plate so I didn't explain. But I think you get it on Island 5 or 6. If you save the girl you unlock some mini-games, but not the Sapphire Plate. But you should check http://www.serebii.net/red_green/island5.shtml and http://www.serebii.net/red_green/island6.shtml because it gives the info on the Sapphire plate. Those links above also gives you the info on Islands 5 & 6. To get the Sapphire Plate you also have to defeat the Elite 4.
