I heard rumors that now, physical/special will not be decided by an attack's type, but will be different for different attacks. If so, then how will one be able to discern whether the attack is physical or special?

When you look at you pokemon's data on their attacks, there is either an impact sign(physical), a circle inside a bigger circle(special), or a ying-yang(other). Its also common sense mostly.EX: Volt tackle is physical, whilst shadowball is special, and agility is other.

i actually love this new idea because then the pokemon that were once weak could be stronger for example Flareeon was thought of as physcial and stunk, but now its know a phsycial fire move fire fang! i cant wait to get these games

do you think battle revouloution will also be like this?

Kenny

It probably will.

Anyway, I think the new feature is cool because now I can teach Gengar Shadow Ball and Sludge Bomb, which both gain STAB. Also, if you haven't heard, some moves are even stronger like Outrage (120 instead of 90) and Fly (90 instead of 70).

the strongest move however in terms of numbers is explosion at a massive 250!!but still makes user faint

Parukia too. With his slighty larger Sp.Def than Def, he would have an advantage w/o the splits. But now, Dragon Claw is physical, so therefore more damage... I know that is a bad example, but it still fits.

I think it's better. Now Gengar gains STAB and Sp. ATK when it uses Sludge Bomb and Shadow Ball.

Anyway, apart from physical/special changes, the moves are different in strength, too. Fly does 90, Outrage does 120, and Flash has 100 accuracy.

Same
Type
Attack
Bonus

It means that if you look at a move, like Thunderbolt for example; if you compare two Pokemon (One Electric Type, One not)who can use it that have the same Special Attack, the Electric will do more damage with it.

A good example is Zapdos & Gardevoir. They both can learn Thunderbolt, and both have the same base Special Attack (125). Lets compare damage against something neutral to Electric Damage... like Stantler (With Neutral Nature and No EVs for anyone wondering).

If Stantler is hit by Thunderbolt from Gardevoir, he will have (not accounting for Critical Hits) between 41% and 50% Health left.

If Stantler is hit by Thunderbolt from Zapdos, he will have (not accounting for Critical Hits) between 11% and 25% Health left.

Kill the Smilies =x

Yes and I love the new Physical/Special move difference. Makes tons more sense. However, some skills like Blaze Kick and Ice Punch still have me confused...
Are the Special, or Physical?

the only bit i dont like about the phys/sp split is that the water starter has no good moves for sp atk, it should have better phys atk, so that is would pawn with earthquake, brickbreak, steel wing and a water attack rather than just luster cannon and hydro pump

Ehh... Back on topic. ><

For some Pokemon, this change is very good, but for others, it stinks... For instance, Alakazam's elemental punches are now physical, so it can't pull them off now. Yet, Hitmonchan, who couldn't use 'em very well since they were Special, is now more powerful!

It's more realistic, but in some cases it doesn't make since. Such as Razor Leaf, which is now Physical instead of Special. We've all seen Bulbasaur launch leaves on the anime, and in the games the attack is shown as flying leaves hitting the opponent. It's a Physical attack now, which I don't understand. In this case, shouldn't Earthquake become Special -- not that I want it to -- since there's no contact made? Some Physical attacks have remained Physical that shouldn't (if that makes since), but I guess it's for the best.

*grumbles* I like it depending on the Pokemon and its needs, but my beloved Sceptile, who has three formerly Special-type attacks (Leaf Blade, Dragon Claw, and Thunderpunch) would have to transform into a Physical Sweeper. Unless a Sceptile keeps Giga or Mega Drain from when it's a Treecko (or breeds to get some new move), it will have more Physical attacks when it's Attack stat is lower...

Skye

No, I think razor leaf should be a physical move, because the leaves are hitting the pokemon. (I don't have a very good point.) -_-

I beleive it isn't based on physically hitting, more on like what is hitting.

Ex. Fangs, Claws, Leaves, ect. are physical.

Beams, blasts, energy are Special.

Physical Sceptile actually can work, as Sceptile gets Swords Dance to boost its medium-high attack stat.

Also, Sceptile does get a lot of special moves as well. Instead of Leaf Blade, it gets Energy Ball, an 80-power 100-accuracy special Grass move. Instead of Dragon Claw, it gets Dragon Pulse, which is just like it except special and has ten extra power. It lost Thunderpunch, but now benefits even more from Hidden Power, which is now always special. It also gets special Hyper Beam and Frenzy Plant (which are novelty, but w/e) and Leaf Storm, the Grass equivalent of Overheat.

Oh, and if that isn't enough, Sceptile also gets Focus Bomb, a 120-pow, 75-acc special Fighting move. :)

I don't really think the change has ruined that many Pokemon. Zam loses the punches, gets Hidden Power anything, Shadow Ball and Focus Bomb. Ninjask loses Silver Wind, but gains tons of physical moves, backed up by Swords Dance and outrageous speed (90 attack isn't too bad). Nothing got that badly shafted. :P
