View Full Version : Experimenting with Shiftry
currently experimenting with shiftrys possible movesets and could do with some advice and some opinions on movesets potentials. Ok im going to ignore the standard shiftry sunnybeam set, but here are my possibilities.
1 turn sleeping rest makes him hard to take down.
Adamant (252hp,129def,129sp def)
Leech Seed then dig to counter fires, but more so to stall for a turn while leech seed saps health away, Shadow Ball for an attacking move to counter anyone who switches in an alakazam with fire punch or other psychics and ghosts.
Unsure on nature[?](Unsure on evs but prolly mainly def and sp def with hp)
Sunny day to double speed then double team up and any fires who switch in to take advantage of sunnyday you use dig on.
Any peoples opinions on the movesets? i used the 2nd set on aerodactyl and managed to kill him fairly easily but dig was taking double damage from earthquake but not hitting, but used to stall mainly. Peoples opinions? constructive criticism please.

Base stats for Shiftry.
I'd try something like
In this case, using a + spA with a uh... -atk doesn't seem that bad, since Explosion does have a high power... Evs in SpA and HP, maybe.
Ok im going to ignore the standard shiftry sunnybeam set
dont like the fact the whole set relys on sunny day switch in tyranitar and ure whole set needs another sunnyday which gives ample time to switch out again and the fact it boosts fire type moves against shiftry further still and also doubles the speed of other pokes with chlorophyll too such as other potential exploders like exxegutor. More about endurance i think for this poke.

I wasn't aware that was the standard.
Next time if you don't state what the hell a standard set is I'm going to keep ignoring that.
btw, 2 of your sets have sunnybeam (standard?)
And dig (wtf?)
dig is to stall, it also counters fires sure a player could switch to a flying type or a poke with levitate but its to stall while leech seed saps health, base 100 attack is its best stat especially with +10% from adamant as well.
the thing with the set is, all of the moves on the set rely on sunny day :eek:
to a certain extent. for example
hp fire is boosted by sunny day, explosion is about attacking fire from the doubled speed from sunnyday, and solar beam.

To be quite honest, why would you have rain dance on a Lanturn, for example, if you're gonna put dive and Thunderbolt on it instead of Thunder and Surf? Same logic in this. If you're gonna use Sunny day, geez, for crying out loud, take advantage of it. Dig is a base 60 move, what's it gonna do to anything? Let you take a 100 power attack while underground? (iirc, Quake doubles in power if you're underground, and Shiftry's defense is, uh, crap?)
Seriously though, if you were gonna leech seed and stall and stuff, don't use Shiftry. It has attack, but the defense is .... not there. Ludicolo has Leech seed, Surf, Protect and Toxic, for example, because it has 299 spDef. Shiftry has like 219 defense both ways.
As well, if you were gonna go all offensive on it, and still have rest, you'd need a heal bell/aromatheraphy user on your team. No way you can live 2-3 turns if your opponent is any smart. If you're going offensive, I'll suggest +speed Personality, les you be outrun because you only have 259 speed at max neutral.
As well, if you're gonna do sunny day with your shiftry, DO use a set that takes advantage. Otherwise there's just no point to using Sunny day.
And fyi, just because all the moves take advantage of sday doesn't make it standard :( It's standard only if it's the most common set around (I wouldn't know, I don't netbattle RS taht much, and I don't even see Shiftry being used the times I do)

Sunny Beamer: Sunny Day, Solar Beam, HP Ice, Explosion @ Leftovers
Lonely or Naughty Nature. 252/110/0/12/136/0. That'll give it enough Speed to outrun everything w/ SD (with an exception of Ninjask and other pogeys that had their Speed boosted. It can hopefully outrun all pogeys with Chlorophyll, since most of them has 198 Speed). Its HP is also divisible by 16 for leftovers. The remaining goes to offense. HP Ice for Salemence and other Chlorophyll pogeys.
Physical Sweeper: Swords Dance, Substitute, Focus Punch, Shadow Ball @ Leftovers.
Jolly Nature. 192/66/0/252/0/0. It has enough HP to Sub four times. Max Speed is important on Sweepers, and the remaining EPs go to Attack.
Sceptile wanna-be: Substitute, Leech Seed, Hidden Power Ice, Faint Attack @ Leftovers.
Timid Nature: 60/0/0/252/198/0. Not as annoying as Sceptile, but it works.
NOTE: There are better EV distro out there. :ermm:
Like mlugia had stated, Shiftry is not made to stall.

If you have to use Sunny day, for gods sake, have a set that needs it!
- Sunny Day
- Solar beam
- HP Fire
- Brick Break
- Aerial Ace/Amnesia
- Shadow Ball
currently using stuff for 202 so no substitute or swords dance just yet but looking forward to it when fr/lg comes out on my gameboy. finished EV training my physical shiftry. has 252 speed,252 attack,jolly with
aerial ace,rest[+earlybird] , brick break, shadow ball.

If your team has no Aromatherapy or Heal bell user, Shiftry's defense is a bit too low to be using rest on, isn't it?
ive yet to add a healbeller in ruby sapphire, was thinking maybe chimecho.

HP Fire (Heck, I got lucky)
If used wisely, you could easily trick opponents in battle.

Shiftry doesn't really have many good support moves to use given its stats and movepool. It has at its disposal an arsenal of special attacks, however, which is why my set can work. (see above) It has good attack, yet gets no STAB. It is really sub-par, IMO.
