As bluntly as I can put it...
A role play is when two or more people take roles, or characters, and play them in different situations, hence the name.

Basically to put it, you can pretty much say Role Playing is similiar to a public group of people that can "add" chapters to a story, after having to have read the previous chapters to continue the stories in a sensual track, of course. When you Role Play, you are pretty much required to enter your own "character" most of the times, and rarely does any Role Play allow you to choose a character.
In a Role Play, there are about three phases.
Introducing the Role Play (In a Forum case, as a thread with text, supposedly to be an explanation, or plot revisement)
Waiting for the public to apply for the Role Play, after having their "characters" approved by that Role Play's creator, or some other guy in charge of the thing.
The Role Play in action itself.
In Role Plays, a word that can be called a common concept, or recurring events throughout many kinds of Role Plays, ideas, shows, etc., would be the word "cliche". When something is "cliche", it means that it is a commonly used phenomenom among many ideas and stuff. Perhaps you have seen many television shows were characters always meet their arch-nemesis after a rescue, or so? That's a "cliche" kind of thing.
Role Playing is very simple. You just have to understand what the idea of the Role Play is, and you start posting things in chapter format, probably. You interact with things through dialogue.
Simple as that.
Its a game where you "become" another person and be a hero of somesort.
Yeah, that kind of description is REALLY helpful.
