View Full Version : How long does it take you to write a chapter?

I was just wondering if anyone else was a very slow writer like me. For a long chapter that takes alot of thought it sometimes takes me 2-4 months to 'finish' a 7-12 page chapter  .
I know that you have to keep your updates steady to keep readership they always say, but I think a good story can outlast time between chapters  . The way I see it, rushed chapters may get more readers early on, but chapters you put some time into will keep the handfull of very faithfull readers that do wait.
What do you think?

Depends a lot on how into writing the story I am.

If I'm actively writing a fic, I try not to let updates go over a week in time. Anything over that and I see that people lose interest in reading the story or they forget about it in time.

While actively writing the entire chapter, it maybe takes 1-2 hours worth of time.

It depends on whether you rewrite or not.
When I wrote fanfictions, I wrote one-page chapters, and I tried to update every week.

Wow, you are fast Neo O.o
I guess I overthink certain parts..it's not writers block, becuase I can still write, but it is 'must get this just right the first time' stopping. Does that make any sense? *feels crazy and slow :(*

Edit: One page chapters are not allowed though Ze Gobou :P. At least, I've never heard of them being allowed :P

Meh, it usually takes me about 1-2 hours to write a chapter... I sometimes get some chapters up within a week, but most of the time, it takes me a while to put it all together before I actually put it on the forum. I've found out exactly who my loyal readers are by waiting for somewhat long periods of time to put the chapters up...

not that long, long chapters tend to kill me -_-

I usually attempt to update at least once a week, but sometimes it'll be two before I can get a chapter up. Writing them can take as little as an hour, but I usually reread it and fix stuff that I don't like. Mine are usually three to five pages long, at least as far as Shadow Mist and Shadow Sky go.

At first I made one paragraph as a chapter at this one place(which I thought took forever..XD), but then I upgraded to alot more paragraphs that started to take way more time, as in a couple days.

But with the ame re-write as that one, it took a really long time to make the first chapter. I had a pre-new years revolution back in september that I would post a preview of my my fic on sppf, and so I wrote about a page in December. But after that, it drifted away for so long. I had just picked up on a few weeks ago, and it took far longer than I expected. Nine pages though.

It sed to take me a long time to finish a chapter, I just wrote it whenever I had time. Now it takes me a half-hour to write. I needed to keep it small, because I have a time limit on the computer.
I'm able to make one and a half page chapter within the half hour.

You shouldn't rush your work because of a time limit. People want quality not quantity.

It depends entirely on whether I'm in the mood to write the chapter or not. I've written a chapter in two days of teacher strike, which is the fastest chapter ever; it often used to take me just a couple of weeks to finish a chapter, but now since my chapters are both getting longer and I'm putting more effort into them, they usually take at least a month or two now.

Right now I'm writing chapter 34 of The Quest for the Legends version ILCOE. Chapter 33 was posted in October. I only very recently got into any sort of mood to write it at all; now I might finish it in maybe a week or so if I'm lucky, but it's been waiting in stasis for awfully long, just because I'd so much rather be writing chapter 35. :/ If I'm really excited about writing a chapter, it may take only a few days; most of chapter 33 was, once I had gotten in the mood which admittedly took quite a while, written in just two or three days.

Basically it varies very much.

Of course, during NaNoWriMo I can write abnormally fast; I wrote 20,000 words in the last six days of it. But normally I don't write at NaNoWriMo speed. :P

Eh, If I'm in the mood I can write my 3-page chapters an a decent hour or so... If I promised somebody, I'll make myself in the mood. And strangely, when I'm at my cousin's house I write doubly fast, even though their computer is slower... 0.0 all about my mood, I suppose...

Well, if I am on break on school, it usually takes me about two to three days to finish a chapter, one day if I am really excited about a particular chapter. XD There was this one time during my summer break that I finished two chapters in one day (they're short though, and plus that time Serebii was on downtime XD )

If I am not in school, it would take me probably a few days or so to finish. Depends if I write that chapter on weekend or on weekdays. Right now at the moment I hadn't written anything new in months because of college ("Simplicity" was written and finished months ago O.o;;; )

I definitely agree with you Neo.

I know I update slower than a slugma can travel around the world. People have lost interest in my stories and it kind of is hard to get back into them sometimes. It's too bad work just takes up the time we could use to write.

I think that's why short stories are easier. They take less time and don't require constant attention. The only problem is that people forget about them once they are done.

It takes me about a week, or just my whole math class to write a chapter, but then another week to edit and add on to it. So about 1-2 weeks. ^.^

Depending upon the schedule, I can get a good chapter done in a day or in a month. This depends on if I'm motivated, if I have time, and if I like what I'm writing. Now and Forever, which I thoroughly enjoy to write, takes about a week and a half to write a chapter - four or five pages - on average. However, I have the ability to write one-thousand words an hour (which was my NaNoWriMo pace) if I'm motivated and don't get distracted. However, our computer is right next to the tv at the moment, so it is hard to stay on task. Hopefully, this will eventually change. Of course, we just got a new computer with a couple of games I like (Command and Conquer the First Decade and Star Wars: Empire at War.) Thus, I haven't written any piece all week. Of course, there is also a project I'm working on called Interception (working name Revolution) which I write during school. It's science fiction, and I can get a couple of written days a day if class is easy. However, I don't really plan on doing any serious work on this piece until summer.

Depends on how long the chapter is. It takes me half a minute to do each paragraph. Well, uh, oh ugh! On average, it takes me about five minutes to write a story.

1 page= five minutes
2 page= eight minutes
3 page= ten minutes
4 page= fourteen minutes
5 page= seventeen minutes

And the truth is, even though it takes me less, the stories are preety cool.

I take about a day, sometimes 2 days. I'll write a rough draft first, not stopping until I reach a good spot to end the chapter. That might take a few hours. Then I'll do something else and come back a few hours later to re-read it and add or make changes.

I've never finished a chapter of a fan fiction before, but that's all procrastination. XD

If I liked the plot of my story and was in the mood to write, it would probably take me a good week to get it all down. Maybe even two, depending on the length of the chapter.
