I think he was the greatest trainer ever, and went off to an undiscovered region and was brought to a place of mystical pokemon and never returned. But ash knew his dad, he just left on a journey and never returned.

Good question. Not everyone in the anime has both parents anyway. I'm not sure if Dawn has a father, but he certainly didn't appear in the first episode, and in any case the mother seems like the more important parent.

I've seen this question in every Anime Discussion of every Pokemon Forum I have ever been in, and here's the general idea that most people agree on.

Ash's father was a big-shot trainer like Ash who wanted to become a pokemon master. He stopped in Pallet town once and had a... well, a fling with Delia Ketchum (Ash's mom). He left the morning after, not knowing she got pregnant. A few months later, he reached the dream of becoming a pokemon master, and settled down in some random town in either a yet undiscovered reigon, Sinnoh (although that's very unlikely, and if you read on you'll see why), or in a town in Kanto that Ash has never been to. He met a hot young woman and got her pregnant with Richie, and they lived happily until Richie went on his journey to fill his dad's shoes. Then, we skip ahead to near the series finale. What will happen is, Ash will find out from his mom about his dad, then meet up with Richie on the way to challenge his father for the title of Pokemon Master, and Richie will be doing the same thing. When they get there, they'll find out that they're brothers, and battle to see who gets to challenge the dad. Ash will win, and then in a climactic series finale, Ash will defeat his father, become the greatest pokemon master ever, and the series will end. Eight months later, there will be a spin-off that will feature a new trainer with the same goals as Ash did, and that series will end similarly.

I'm also writing a fan-fic about how Ash's dad is a Pikachu who fell in love with Ash's mom, made a magical deal to become human, but under the condition that if they have a baby, the Pikachu would return back to norma. So, Ash is born, the Pikachu returns to normal, and runs away. Ten years later, the Pikachu becomes Richie's Pikachu Sparky. However, that's probably not what happened. Then again, you never know. Also, IU would just like to point out that if this idea was true:

then Ash and gary would not be cousins, Ash would be either Gary's Uncle or Father (again, you never know). Anyway, they can't be cousins, because they would have mentioned that fact at some point, possibly to help explain their Rivalry.
