View Full Version : 4 word rule?!

I know that there is a four word rule. And I know all rules should be obeyed. But I have seen a couple of things lately. There have been posts similar to the following:

Lol. Wordy word fourwordruleyoucantgetmeitypedfourwordssohah.
Now that was an extreme exaggeration. But still, the posts are similar. They type a two word message and then tag "word word" at the end, or something stupid, and it bothers me that people are getting away with this.

It's no greater than putting your message without the idiotic tag. People are trying to break the rules without getting caught. It's ridiculous and purely annoying.

Thank you for your time.

It's an opinion, all you freaks who are going to flame me now. I'll bet you're not flaming me now that you read this.

Discuss.

As long as your post isn't extremely dumb, it's fine. The 4 word rule a formality, more than anything; i've seen good posts consisting in less than 4 words

It was already announced by Jack that this is not allowed, and it is enforced, at least by me, any time it is seen. For now, just report the person to us and we will deal with it.

I completely agree with you. Honestly, people, it's not that big of a deal. If you can't put more than three words in a post, it's not worth your time writing it or someone else's time reading it.

For example. Rather than putting, 'lol wordy word word', you can put, 'lol, that's really funny'

OMG. It was magic. Add three simple words practically saying what you were before and you've met the standards. Amazing, isn't it? Not that I'm encouraging those kind of posts, but it's less irritating that 'lol (four word rule)'.

Remember when Peekaboo Pikachu used to say "Yeah!!! Lan lan lan"? That was weird. O_o

And thank you for noticing the annoying loophole. =P

Well, that isn't okay either. It's the same thing as just one "lol." You want to post more of an opinion than a reaction.

What's more annoying, and growing in the DP boards, is members replying "Remember the 4 word rule". And then they'd reply "oh, sorry, i didn't know." :sleepy:

It's a lot easier to report the post and let the mods determine if the post was ok or not. As long as the post holds enough meaning, it'll be fine.

Smilies don't count as words.

Stop breaking the damn rule.

It doesn't suck. Its here to stop spam.

Saying 'Wordy word word' or 'four word rule' or random crap filler doesn't count, and if I see it on the RP boards or G/C, I will be dishing out Infractions because its so rampant and annoying.

Ya know. I've actually seen this rule broken more than any other rule.

I encourage people to transform their posts into a lengthy one instead of just one word to sum it all up.

ex. "lol funny shedowlank word4"

Instead

"Lol, nice joke, ShadowLink. It made my day."

That is using very little words, and it is more fulfilling.

What I don't get is when, for example, somebody has a sprite/graphic shop. When somebody requests, they will quote it saying "accepted" and then get drilled for the four word rule. It's not spamming, it's notifying.

That is just one circumstance that gets on my nerve, but I do agree, the four word rule might as well not be in existence for all the ways people try to ignore it...of course, I don't think we should get rid of it, it's a good rule, I just wish people would actually follow it.

sonickid01

"Accepted"

Into ->

"OK, then. I'll get to work on it soon. It may take a while, though.
BTW, I'm now accepting requests for Reposes!"

I just increased that post 22x. Wowz.

You technically aren't breaking the rule with this however. You ARE posting four words but beings an idiot nonetheless. There should be another rule strictly enforcing that using filler words is not tolerated.

Well, as far as im concerned, its only to be expected. Pe2k has been overrun by a whole bunch of newbs lately, and there doesnt look to be a light at the end of the tunnel.

It is a good rule, it is to make sure people do not just go around saying enlightening things such as "Hi" ^^.

HOWEVER, I think there are instances where it is ok to. When you are posting in a thread and all you really have to say is a one word response, such as the URPG Pokemart.

Yeah, I agree te cashier just has to say "Approved". Another place where this thing would happen is in a Sprite or Banner Shop where the owner just has to say "Accepted". But we shouldn't get rid of this rule. Though the newbies should learn not to violate this rule.

I've seen people just posting a smiley or a word such as LOL or OMG. This should be stopped.

The rule itself is to keep pointlessness down. The alternative to this is put up a 25 character limit that's hardwired into the forum instead. I don't think that's a better move overall, though. I let go of enough <4 word posts simply because they were at least decent.

Well, I think its a really nice rule, but the fillers are annoying. People who use them should be told to stop it.

I could think of a way around the 25 char. limit. Not saying, in case it does happen. It could be a better move overall, if this breaking continues to thrive and populate. I think that the URPG Mart and maybe sometimes art threads are ok for under 4 word posts. But only then and there.

"Fillers suck word3 word4."

Sarab, d'you think they'd really stop?

25 character limit?

HI YOU GUYS LOL!!!!!!!!11

4 words, 25 characters, but still SPAM. Honestly, this whole "rule" is one hell of a chocolate teapot.

We have mods for a reason. Meaning is the only thing that has any bearing on a post's worth and the number of words often has little effect.

Haha, I think we all know what spam is by now, no need to type down some things that are spam ...

However, Finch is right, you can have really long posts but still have spam. Take last night, when some jordan2323 was repeatedly spamming all over with ads of basketball shoes and whatnot, and he typed a lot (for random spam).

To Note: Spam will be deleted, no matter how long it is. Just learn to0 make your posts worthwhile, you don't have to post to tell someoen you're going to bed or that you just went pee ...

I let it go in some places, like the different War Team threads ...

I would honestly prefer the 25 character limit, because that would eliminate all of the annoying people that post in a thread just to say "Hey, 4 word rule!" and spam it up.

Plus, this way they would have to use 25 characters, instead of us relying on them to know to put four words in. Sure, people would still get around it somehow, but it's easier that way IMO.

But what I am wondering is, if we have the 25 character limit, coudn't noobs put a bunch of smilies?

That is because, if they did smilies, it would look like this, ;biggrin;. That is already nine words so couldn't they just do that and spam?
Correct me if I am wrong.

I protect this rule with everything. I enforce it everywhere I go.

Ok...that was weird. But still, if you don't have anything above four words to say, don't say it at all.

are you sure? J/K...anyways,I type on my own time.....so mostly, it turns up to be a paragraph or two..only because I like to put as much into a conversation as I can without waiting for another person to post.

Yes, but it would be easier to enforce than then 4 word rule. We already have the fillers, so we might as well make it a forced habit to type the 25 characters. It's like being stuck between a rock and a hard place, but of the two, I'd prefer the 25 characters.

In conclusion, if a person cannot elaborate on their thoughts with more than "Hi", unless the situation doesn't need much elaboration, then they're pretty much either better off 1)banned or 2)schooled.

You can't just count every single character though.

On second thought, none of these rules are very effective. Just tighten up the sieve on spamming to where virtually none of it goes through. But then again, mods can't be everywhere at once.

And another problem is that there's not an exact point at which you can consider it spamming. The line is faint and very curved.

He's saying that we shouldn't cheat the rules, he's not encouraging members to break them. Read the thread, or the post for the matter, before you respond to it.

No matter what we do, there will always be filler words, or other ways to get around the rules. There's really no way to stop it than to ban the people that do it, which is too harsh and would downsize the population of PE2K by about half.

I think if you don't have more than 4 words it pretty pointless. I've seen people post like half a page of typing on this board (I still don't belive it). Well anyways, I have no problem with the rule cause I always have something to say ^^

i personally dont like the 4 word rule just cuz i get flamed for my 1-3 word answers in my posts, i think a 25 character limit would work better, not to mention spam would at least be made long enough to figure out what they are sayin so u can then flame them
