#17
(Riddle By sonickid01)

Three men are sent to jail. After some time, they are all given the death sentence. One of the men, however, is blind while the other two have no health defects.

But the executioner offers them a deal. He has five hats- two red and three white. While the men are sleeping, he places a random hat upon each prisoner's head. The moment they wake up, the executioner pulls them into a line without giving them a chance to look in the mirror or take off their hat.

They all look at each other's hats. The order goes; the first man is not blind, the second man is not blind, and the third man is blind. Healthy, healthy, blind.

The executioner walks to the first man and says, "what color is your hat?"

The man replies, "I do not know." He is sent away to be shot.

The executioner walks to the second man, asking the same question.

The second prisoner replies with the same answer and is sent to be shot.

However, when the third, blind man is asked the question, he cleverly replies correctly. The executioner asks if that was a random guess, and the blind man explains how he came to his answer.

All the prisoners were quite intelligent, almost genius-like. The blind man was 100% sure of his answer.

What did the blind man say?

Hints:

- The man's answer did not actually have anything to do with eyesight, but with the other prisoner's replies.

- Remember that there were 2 red hats and 3 white hats.

- A lot of it has to do with probability.

Answered By Matt: First, we know that at least one of the hats must be white, since there are only two red, and three men. Had the first man seen two red hats on the two men, he would have known his was white. Since he was unsure, this means that at least one of the other two men has a white hat, and both of the other two men know that. If the second man knows that at least one of his and the blind man's hats must be white, and he sees that the blind man has on a red hat, it must mean that the he has the white hat, because otherwise the first man would have known he had the white hat and would have answered correctly. The problem is, the second man says he does NOT know what color he has, meaning that the blind man DID NOT have a red hat. (Yes, I'm using his exact words )

I'm as small as an ant, as big as a whale. I'll approach like a breeeze, but can come like a gale. By some I get hit, but all have shown fear. I'll dance to the music, though I can't hear. Of names I have many, of names I have one. I'm as slow as a snail, but from me you can't run.

What am I?

A train goes between Chicago and New York. The brakeman, the fireman and the engineer are named Smith, Jones and Brown. (The names are not necessarily in order). There are also three passengers named Mr. Smith, Mr. Jones and Mr. Brown. Mr. Brown lives in New York. The brakeman lives halfway between New York and Chicago. Mr. Jones earns exactly $20,000 per year. Smith beat the fireman at their last game of golf. The passenger who lives in Chicago has the same name as the brakeman. The brakeman's next door neighbor is a passenger on this train and earns exactly three times as much as the brakeman.

What is the name of the engineer?

Hehe, snuck on for a post.

Anyway, the answer to 6 is... THEY ARE TEETH!! :O

Oh, and the answer for 7 is that he wasn't in da truck. He was walking down the sidewalk. If he had been going down the street, it would of been going the wrong way. However, he wasn't in the truck, and so he waved to the officer. simple as that. However, It probably isn't it.

8 could be gravity, the dark, or something natural occuring everywhere. :P

10 is the one that confounds me. Hmm... what could it be? I was thinking a statue or car.

Oh, and my teacher gave me this awsome paper when we were studying global warming, and I was the first one to get the answer. I'll post it tommorow when mah privalidges are back. :)

6) They are teeth, red hill is the gums.

7) Either he was not in a truck, simply walking, or he was the policeman's son.

8) Time.

9) Higher eye is the sun, over a field of daisies.

Here's a tough riddle that even I still don't fully understand after having it told to me.

-------------------------------

Hint:

Aha. I knew you would click here and highlight this. Nah, the hint is below.

))- The man's answer did not actually have anything to do with eyesight, but with the other prisoner's replies.

))- Remember that there were 2 red hats and 3 white hats.

))- A lot of it has to do with probability.

The answer to sonickid's:

First, we know that at least one of the hats must be white, since there are only two red, and three men.

Since the blind man knows he cannot have a red hat, he knows his hat is white.

Got this one!

A man goes to work every day at a large building. His office is on the 38th floor, almost at the very top. When it's raining, he takes the elevator, but when it's sunny, he takes the stairs.

He is a dwarf. When it is raining, he can use his umbrella to reach the Floor 38 button, but when it is sunny, he cannot, and climbs the stairs.

I'll try to remember one.

The answer to sonickid's:

First, we know that at least one of the hats must be white, since there are only two red, and three men. Had the first man seen two red hats on the two men, he would have known his was white. Since he was unsure, this means that at least one of the other two men has a white hat, and both of the other two men know that. Since the blind man knows he cannot have a red hat, he knows his hat is white.

Let's add something to this... which colors wore the 3 man? =)

Matt: I finally understood my logic, and yes, the 3d man has got a white hat...but what are the colors of the others?

sonickid01

Let's add something to this... which colors wore the 3 man? =)

Matt: I finally understood my logic, and yes, the 3d man has got a white hat...but what are the colors of the others?
That doesn't matter. It is actually impossible to find that with the given clues. Since the blind man has a white hat, you have 2 red and 2 white. If there was only 1 of one color, it's obvious that one is red and one is white. However, you can have all the following combinations with the other two men:

White White
White Red
Red White
Red Red

And you don't know which it is except by totally guessing. But it's in not knowing what hat these guys are wearing that we know the blind man's hat. That's the fun of the riddle. :D

---------

Decided to draw a bit of tiny diagram to match Matt's answer.

There are two red hats and three white hats. All the possible combinations for the three men are:

W R R
R W R
R R W
W W R
W R W
R W W
W W W

If the first was true, the man would know he had a white hat since all the possible red hats were taken. But he did not know, and so, he had to have a red hat. The possibilities are now:

R W R
R R W
W W R
W R W
R W W
W W W

If any man sees two reds, he knows immediately what his color is. Red hats on friend = "I am white." The first man does not see this, with this second combination. It is a possibility thus far. On the next one, he does, however, but not on the other ones.

R W R
W W R
W R W
R W W
W W W

Now, if the second man sees two reds, he also knows what his hat is. So we scratch that one off the list.

W W R
W R W
R W W
W W W

So we are still debating between whether the blind man has a red or a white hat. On the first one, both the first and second man see a white and red hat. But, the first man did not know what his hat is. The second man heard that, and learned that he or his friend must have a white hat, or both.

W W R
W R W
W W W

Now if the blind man has a red hat, the second man must know his is white, because of the clues given by the first man not knowing his hat. But the second man doesn't know either, so the blind prisoner does not have red.

W R W
W W W

So we are left with two choices. However; both give the same answer to the asked question: "what is the blind man's hat?" to which the answer would be "white." So, contradictory to what I had said before to answer Marth, we DO know that the first man's hat was white, but we are not sure of the second man's hat. But who cares, right?

All of this page's worth of work was done in the blind man's head and calculated out.

Smart blind felon.
