Which move is better Protect or Mind Reader? Tell me what you think and why. :)

Protect is a pretty handy move for when you're trying to wear your opponent down with Toxic, or when you're about to be hit in the face with a Solarbeam, but in general, it's pretty useless.

Mind Reader isn't really very useful, because most of the moves it combos with aren't exactly brilliant moves to begin with, so I'm going for Protect.

How can you even compare the two moves? THey have nothing in common other than they both do no damage to the opponent.

I'm with mlugia. You should compare moves that are alike. Such as mind reader with lock on, and protect and detact.

That would be pointless though, because Protect and Detect are identical, as are Mind Reader and Lock-on, so you can't really say that one is preferred over the other because they do the same thing, :P

Don't they have different pp and accuracy and either protect or detect cant be used over and over again effectively. I forgot which though.

Upon further inspection, it has been noted by myself that Protect is indeed better than Detect for two reasons:

1) It has 10PP as opposed to Detect's 5.

2) It's a TM, unlike Detect (well, Detect was a TM in G/S/C, but not any more).

They both do the same thing, Detect is a Fighting move, whereas Protect is Normal.

As for Mind Reader and Lock-on, they truely are identical.
Same type (Normal), same PP (5), and neither has ever been a TM.
Oh, and they also both do the same thing, :P

Well, that's my two cents... pence... whatever.

protect sucks because you're only delaying your defeat.
Protect screams weak.
lock-on is good combo with sheer cold, fissure and horn drill.
end of story

With that kind of attitude and reasoning, I'd love to take you for a dance on Netbattle and destroy all your pre-conceptions =)

Yeah I thought Mind Reader was like Protect...but I forgot it wasn't. :)

Sry bout that, realized I put the wrong thing here after it was too late. But thanks for the feedback anyway. :)

I prefer Mind Reader. I guess I'm more offense oriented, but Protect and Detect seem like they're just delaying the inevitable, and on top of that you lose a couple turns if your monster isn't fast enough.

i prefer mind reader, since i'm more of a attack person than a, defence person. and detect eventually misses so i doesen't work.

Even though these moves have nothing at all to do with each other, in my mind, Protect is better, without question. Protect can have many uses with Toxic, Lefties, etc. However, Mind Reader almost never works. As soon as you use it, your opponent WILL switch. (unless you trap, which makes the whole thing much too slow and not even worthwhile)

yeah lock on is only good if wobbefet learned it since pokemon cant escape from him.

Yeah, that would be a great combo...except that Wobby doesn't have any attacks that have an accuaracy under 100%. :silenced:

It's too bad he can't learn any TMs. -_-

yeah that's the problem.so detect has to be better.

Indeed.

By the way, has anyone ever had any luck with the Poliwrath [Whirlpool, Mind Reader, Dynamicpunch/etc.] combo? It seems pretty slow to me, but very effective when it works.
