What about those characteristics? "Likes to doze off" "Mischievous" ...
Are these connected to nature?

No. Those what you said were introduced in D/P. They are like nature only that instead of just a single word its a whole sentence.

How do they tell you that?

MetalKid's IV Caculator. (http://www.metalkid.info/Pokemon/OnlineProgram/Calculators/IV.aspx) By far, the best IV Caculator.

And some of us really wish they weren't, despite the fact that we still abide by them anyway. Natures are REALLY annoying, though, especially when put with IVs. It takes a lot of restarts to get a Palkia with a Modest nature and good IVs...

Not when you have someone like Alakazam who can't use Attack and uses a heavy Special Attack.

Natures also boost a contest stat and hurt another contest stat/Poffin/Pokeblock flavor preference. Just replace Attack with Cool (Spicy), Special Attack with Beauty (Dry), Speed with Cute (Sweet), Special Defense with Smart (Bitter), and Defense with Tough (Sour).
