This guide will help you chain for an awesome http://www.serebii.net/games/shiny.gif

DA SHINY BIDOOF

If you plan to make a Shiny Pokémon collection, start off with a Shiny Bidoof.

I KNOW, EVERYBODY HATES BIDOOF, BUT LET'S GO GET ONE ANYWAY.

You'll need:

Poké Radar
PP Restorage
A weak Pokémon or one with Super Fang/False Swipe
Poké Balls (Luxury if you want to use it and make it adore you)
A medium-strong Pokémon with a high-PP offensive move like Quick Attack
LOTS OF PATIENCE AND TOLERANCE.
Many Max/Super Repels
Cleanse Tag

Give the strong Pokémon (its good to make it have Intimidate, like Staraptor or Luxio, the Cleanse Tag. Go into the large patch of grass in Route 202, just above Sandgem Town. Oh! And go to the farthest patch away from you (unless it's Shiny; it ALWAYS is the same Pokémon), but make sure that another patch doesn't leave the screen!

IGNORE THE CHEERFUL SONG AND DON'T LET IT CHANGE YOUR MOOD TO CHEERY SO IT MAKES YOU SKIP ALL OVER THE HOUSE; I ACCIDENTALLY DROPPED MY DS INTO THE TOILET ON A 21-SHINX STREAK BECAUSE OF THE FRIGGIN' SONG. :doh: I CAUGHT IT, THANK GOD, BUT ACCIDENTALLY RAN INTO A NORMAL BIDOOF WHEN THERE WAS AN ALTERNATE-COLORED SHINY GRASS. I FLICKED A WRONG BUTTON. :dazed:

Sympathetic now? :cry:

Use the Poké Radar. Try to stick to the non-sparkling grass (not Pokémon, grass) for Bidoof. Go to the farthest patch away from you, but make sure another one

DON'T GET DISTRACTED. YOU MIGHT MISS IT. IF IT WAS ALTERNATE, THEN WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

KILL EVERY GUY YOU SEE. NOT IF HE'S SHINY OF COURSE. GIRLS, TOO.

Do not:

Flee
Use your Bike
Get distracted
Be overconfident (you WILL mess up)
Get the song to make you giddy
Go out of the grassy patch
Kill or run from the Shiny Pokémon (duh)
Use an area with a corner
Take a break when you are looking for a Shiny and you're not in a battle

Oh, and if you need a break, close the Nintendo DS (Lite) in a battle.

Same for all COMMON Pokémon

Okay, now that down, let's move on to something better.

http://www.pokemonelite2000.com/sprites/dpffsa/dpffsa403.png

DA SHINY SHINX

A lot like the Bidoof. For a Shinx, you'll need:

Poké Radar
PP Restorage
A weak Pokémon or one with Super Fang/False Swipe
Poké Balls (Luxury if you want to use it and make it adore you)
A medium-strong Pokémon with Static and a high-PP offensive move like Quick Attack
LOTS OF PATIENCE AND TOLERANCE
Many Max/Super Repels
Cleanse Tag

Okay. We're doin' good.

Put the Static Pokémon in the top of your party and go to the same place over by Sandgem where you caught your Bidoof. Give that Pokémon the Cleanse Tag.

Great! Hunt the same way as you did the Bidoof.

Do not:

Flee
Use your Bike
Get distracted
Be overconfident (you WILL mess up)
Get the song to make you giddy
Go out of the grassy patch
Kill or run from the Shiny Pokémon (duh)
Use an area with a corner
Take a break when you are looking for a Shiny and you're not in a battle

Same for all ELECTRIC COMMON Pokémon

http://www.pokemonelite2000.com/sprites/dpmfsb/dpmfsb070.png

DA SHINY WEEPINBELL

Basically, use the Cleanse Tag, Max Repels, and chain your best. This guy's pretty easy, but I messed up on a 25 chain due to running into a grass on accident while resetting. It's in the Battle Zone on that little island by the Fight Area, in the ocean, left of the Fight Area... THAT PLACE WHERE YOU CATCH TOGEPI.

Please note there is a LOT of stuff to break your chain here.

SWARMS

Go to Prof. Rowan's HOUSE, NOT LAB and talk to the little girl.

See what's swarming today.

Go there.

Same dos/don'ts as Bidoof.

Needs, too.
Same for all RARE Pokémon

Other Stuff:

RESETTING THE RADAR

I made this because the people who read were getting low chains, so I made this part. Okay...

If there aren't 4 patches wiggling, or if the farthest away isn't the same color, walk the steps you need
If the walking to that any patch, wiggling or not, looks like it will make any patch go off the screen, reset (otherwise the chain will automatically stop)

RESET - Walk the amount of steps the game says to take and press Y (unless the Poke Radar isn't selected, which it should be)

Now that is good advice. You should put advice for getting a harder to get shiny like Budew, Chatot, Chansey, Porygon, and/or Eevee.

Thanks for the guide! This'll help. I was chaining some Shink though, when a Starly came in and broke it. Then I was chaining them again, then the Pokeradar stopped, and then I was JUST chaining them, and a Sentret broke my chain.

Darn worthless wimps. >.>

With the radar, if you keep killing the wild guys that appear ( non rare) than a rare one will appear after killing some e.g kill two machops on route 210 and a Bagon or a Miltank might appear (pearl only)

either he was calling me a baka or he is saying a "baka" pokemon (i.e. Bidoof) that will mess your chain up and make you lose your chain.

Either way...

You do realize that chaining doesn't increase your chances of finding a shiny? The odds are still about 1/8000 no matter how high your chain goes. The only reason the Pokéradar is good for finding shinies is because it lets you find a lot of one specific Pokémon without being interrupted. For example, in my Sapphire, I was looking for a shiny Lunatone and I found a shiny Zubat instead :dazed:. If I had been in my Pearl, I could have used the Pokéradar to eliminate my chances of finding a Zubat and concentrate solely on Lunatones. However, even if I had a 100-Lunatone chain, the odds of finding a shiny one as the 101st would still be the same.

What are you talking about, when you chain, the chances of finding a shiny increases by just a little bit. and its 1/8125 chance of finding a shiny gets lowered ervery time you catch or defeat a pokemon. and let me ask you one thing, why would they make shiny patches if the encounter of finding a shiny pokemon stays the same? If your going to be on this site, get some freakin' common sense!

A chain of 40 gives you a better chance for a shiny if you know how to do it. If you don't then don't bother.

i dont even know how to make a chain with the poke radar. some one please tell me!
After you use the Pokéradar once and KO or capture the Pokémon you find, the Pokéradar automatically activates again, and you can find another Pokémon. If it's of the same species and you KO or capture it again, the Pokéradar wil activate again. You can keep this up for as long as the same species of Pokémon continues to appear, and stringing them together this way is called "chaining." Pokétch app. #20 keeps track of how long your longest chains are and what Pokémon you chained each time.

Oh, and I figured out how to calculate your odds.

In order to get your percentage of getting a shiny, put the current amount of your chain (lets say its 40) over 8192, so on your calculator or computer, put 40/8192. My calculator automatically puts it in decimal form, as most do. If you round, the percentage is 0.0049% .

If you wanted a fraction of your odds, do 8192 devided by your chain. (lets once again say its 40, do 8192 devided by 40)
If you round, you should get 1/205, which is why its a good number to stop at.)

This I am pretty certain about, but its not been confirmed by nintendo yet. :)

Actually, the odds are not what I posted - that theory has been disproven.
Really, there is a huge curb.

At 30, your odds are still around 1/5500, at 35 they're 1/1100, and at 40, its 1/200.

And resetting the radar is when you walk 50 steps, with your repel on, and dont enter a battle. This recharges the radar, so you can then use it again to get a new batch of shaking patches. This wont break your chain.

And dont try to grow your chain higher than 50 - Your odds actuallly stop getting better at 40, so just reset the radar from now untill you see the shiny patch.

Thanks for the advice. ^^ I'll do that.

Now I did witness the shiny grass... It looks like four stars coming off of it. :D

Yeah. [and sorry for the double post up there. I barely ever do that.]

It has 4 stars in the corners that pulse.
I had a huge chain of 184 swablus today. Its my highest ever. Infact, way higher than my 2nd best, 117 absols. xD My third best is 94 pidgeys.

Anyways congrats on the ralts. I didnt have to try too hard for mine because I got it at a chain of 10. xD good job.

This has been the most helpful guide I've found since Pokeradar chaining was discovered...

And also the one that causes me the most sadness.

From what I'm inferring in the first post, the sparkles that flash on patches of grass when you come out of battle can be different colors. Is this correct?
If this is so, and this is the method by which to tell what patch to go to, to continue your chain, then I'm stuck and outta luck (SOL.)

I have colorblindness issues :(

The highest chain I'd ever gotten was a 22-Roserade at the Trophy garden... which I've not been able to duplicate since, either with swarms or not.

i go for easy pokemon. try out with something like a growlithe or bidoof. then work your way up. if you ever see 2 peices of grass that look the same as the one your looking for reset it. run a diff way from the sparkle grass and then run like 100 steps and do it again

my highest chain was 15 with starly. the only shiny i got was a shellos (west) with 11 lol

so i was walking to the north part of rt 210 to get a shiny ponyta (which are blue btw and look awesome) and on the way up, in the long grass where u cant use the radar, i find the shiny ponyta. NOT EVEN KIDDING!!! :crackup: wat r the odds? (1/8192ish)

Sparkles?

Is that the key?
I currently hate the 'Radar with an I-don't use-mine passion.

So if I see a sparkle, it hints at something?

So, does chaining actually increase shiny chances? I've been wondering that. If there's a FAQ that states this, please link me to it.

yes there is, and if you care, you should look it up.
i do have the formula though.

PLEASE READ FOR ALL OF YOUR MATHMATICAL
QUESTIONS ABOUT THE SHINY RATE
i found the formula to find the shiny rate, depending on how far you are in your chain.
dont listen to the people that say "the chance doubles" or "the percentage doesnt go up".
this is a part of the games coding.

formula:

14747-40(n)
P (shiny)= ___________________
2621440 x (41-n)

P = probability

n = chain length
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
the probability of finding a shiny pokemon after a chain of 20 is about 0.253%,
and after 40, its 0.5%. shinys are still hard to find though.
i really hope i can do this. ...i can hardly even get to 20! ...and yet some people can get over 100!! 0__o
any more tips anyone??
(i am going to try your guide...) but i know a starly is gonna break a chain
of bidoof after ten with my luck. :goofy:
ALSO! more info to know. AFTER 40, STOP CHAINING, AND START TO RESET YOUR POKERADAR!
if you can get up to 40. after 40, the percentage of the shiny rate no longer goes up.
you will notice that in the formula. 41-40 is 1 , times that to 2621440, and it will ofcoarse will stay that number [1x(y)=(y)].
that will be the highest it can go.
if you use the formula, you will notice the decimal is moved. for a chain of 40, your calculator will show 0.0005! so move the decimal back 3 places.
it should say 0.5.
it took me awhile to figure that out.
:p
i am stupid. anyway, i hope that helps you guys. as for me, any more tips?
and why would ur pokemon hold clense tags if you already have repels? :/
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
EDIT!:
im taking my break now, but i have SUCCESSFULLY gotten to 40! now if there are always 4 grass patches shaking, most likely, i would only have to use
the pokeradar 50 times, or around the area. i never tried bidoof, actually im on shinx, with my lv.100 raichu, nacho in front, who has the ability static.
i think i finally got the hang of this after 2 days! [goodiegoodie] i hope i can get that shiny. cuz if i do, im naming it Tangy. :)
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
EDIT AGAIN! :)
found five shinys! a shinx, a voltorb, and three pachirisu. :)
now people hunting for voltorb, DONT waste ANY masterball on it the ones you find in swarms. they dont have self-destruct OR explosion yet.
they are too low leveled (around lv.28) to learn them at that point, so just capture them just like any other pokemon. i caught mine with a dusk ball.
~i no longer need help. :D ~
This guide will help you chain for an awesome http://www.serebii.net/games/shiny.gif
http://www.pokemonelite2000.com/sprites/dpmfsa/dpmfsa399.png
DA SHINY BIDOOF
If you plan to make a Shiny Pokémon collection, start off with a Shiny Bidoof.
I KNOW, EVERYBODY HATES BIDOOF, BUT LET'S GO GET ONE ANYWAY.
You'll need:
Poké Radar
PP Restorage
A weak Pokémon or one with Super Fang/False Swipe
Poké Balls (Luxury if you want to use it and make it adore you)
A medium-strong Pokémon with a high-PP offensive move like Quick Attack
LOTS OF PATIENCE AND TOLERANCE.
Many Max/Super Repels
Cleanse Tag
Give the strong Pokémon (its good to make it have Intimidate, like Staraptor or Luxio, the Cleanse Tag. Go into the large patch of grass in Route 202, just above Sandgem Town. Oh! And go to the farthest patch away from you (unless it's Shiny; it ALWAYS is the same Pokémon), but make sure that another patch doesn't leave the screen!
IGNORE THE CHEERFUL SONG AND DON'T LET IT CHANGE YOUR MOOD TO CHEERY SO IT MAKES YOU SKIP ALL OVER THE HOUSE; I ACCIDENTALLY DROPPED MY DS INTO THE TOILET ON A 21-SHINX STREAK BECAUSE OF THE FRIGGIN' SONG. :doh: I CAUGHT IT, THANK GOD, BUT ACCIDENTALLY RAN INTO A NORMAL BIDOOF WHEN THERE WAS AN ALTERNATE-COLORED SHINY GRASS. I FLICKED A WRONG BUTTON. :dazed:
Sympathetic now? :cry:
Use the Poké Radar. Try to stick to the non-sparkling grass (not Pokémon, grass) for Bidoof. Go to the farthest patch away from you, but make sure another one
DON'T GET DISTRACTED. YOU MIGHT MISS IT. IF IT WAS ALTERNATE, THEN WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
KILL EVERY GUY YOU SEE. NOT IF HE'S SHINY OF COURSE. GIRLS, TOO.
Do not:
Flee
Use your Bike
Get distracted
Be overconfident (you WILL mess up)
Get the song to make you giddy
Go out of the grassy patch
Kill or run from the Shiny Pokémon (duh)
Use an area with a corner
Take a break when you are looking for a Shiny and you're not in a battle
Oh, and if you need a break, close the Nintendo DS (Lite) in a battle.
Same for all COMMON Pokémon
Okay, now that down, let's move on to something better.
http://www.pokemonelite2000.com/sprites/dpffsa/dpffsa403.png
DA SHINY SHINX
A lot like the Bidoof. For a Shinx, you'll need:
Poké Radar
PP Restorage
A weak Pokémon or one with Super Fang/False Swipe
Poké Balls (Luxury if you want to use it and make it adore you)
A medium-strong Pokémon with Static and a high-PP offensive move like Quick Attack
LOTS OF PATIENCE AND TOLERANCE
Many Max/Super Repels
Cleanse Tag
Okay. We're doin' good.
Put the Static Pokémon in the top of your party and go to the same place over by Sandgem where you caught your Bidoof. Give that Pokémon the Cleanse Tag.
Great! Hunt the same way as you did the Bidoof.
Do not:
Flee
Use your Bike
Get distracted
Be overconfident (you WILL mess up)
Get the song to make you giddy
Go out of the grassy patch
Kill or run from the Shiny Pokémon (duh)
Use an area with a corner
Take a break when you are looking for a Shiny and you're not in a battle
Same for all ELECTRIC COMMON Pokémon
http://www.pokemonelite2000.com/sprites/dpmfsb/dpmfsb070.png
DA SHINY WEEPINBELL
Basically, use the Cleanse Tag, Max Repels, and chain your best. This guy's pretty easy, but I messed up on a 25 chain due to running into a grass on accident while resetting. It's in the Battle Zone on that little island by the Fight Area, in the ocean, left of the Fight Area... THAT PLACE WHERE YOU CATCH TOGEPI.
Please note there is a LOT of stuff to break your chain here.
SWARMS
Go to Prof. Rowan's HOUSE, NOT LAB and talk to the little girl.
See what's swarming today.
Go there.
Same dos/don'ts as Bidoof.
Needs, too.
Same for all RARE Pokémon
Other Stuff:
RESETTING THE RADAR
I made this because the people who read were getting low chains, so I made this part. Okay...
If there aren't 4 patches wiggling, or if the farthest away isn't the same color, walk the steps you need
If the walking to that any patch, wiggling or not, looks like it will make any patch go off the screen, reset (otherwise the chain will automatically stop)
RESET - Walk the amount of steps the game says to take and press Y (unless the Poke Radar isn't selected, which it should be)
Does it work all the time?
theres a little more to it than that - Ive read several guides and collected data my self (and got my SAT scores back yesterday... <omg>790 in math :dance:</omg>)
anyways...
there are what I call "squares" which are basically, squares that are a certain distance from your player. I denote them as n-squares, where n is their distance from you. While using the poke radar, you only need to care about these:
444444444
433333334
432222234
432111234
4321u1234...........the u in the middle is you, the numbers are part of the n-squares
432111234
432222234
433333334
444444444
I have never seen any patch of grass wiggle outside of the 4-square. Also, If you pay close enough attention, you will notice that only 1 patch of grass wiggles in each n-square up to 4. Sometimes, an n-square wont have a wiggly patch, this happens randomly and when the one the game decided would wiggle was outside of the grass. Thus - your chain will not always break on edges, but there is a possibility that if you are on an edge (especially a corner) all of the wiggly patches will lie outside of the grass, resulting in "the grassy patch remained quiet..." and breaking your chain.
44444xxxx
43333xxxx..........numbers represent grass
43222xx$x..........x's represent non-grass
43211xxxx..........$'s represent wiggly spots
4321uxxxx
xxx$xxxxx
x$xxxxxx$
xxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxx...........The grassy patch remained quiet...
There is no place where there is a guaranteed continuance (?) of your chain, but in the 4-square the chance is reasonable large. If I follow only the 4-square patches and reset when they dont appear, I can reach a 20 chain without much trouble (except when I forget to reapply repels :dazed:
Also, I have not experimented on whether using only the same kind of patch affects your chances, but I bet it does. Also- I read somewhere that walking into a patch with another patch immediately next to it is bad, but I have AS OF YET FOUND NO EVIDENCE TO CONFIRM THIS.
Sparkles?
...
So if I see a sparkle, it hints at something?
Well, ive noticed 4 varieties of grass-
just moving- normal
moving with a little sparkle in it- normal
spasmatically writhing- higher chance of having a rarer pokemon
flashes dramatically 2x but doesnt move- ShInY!!
i had trouble too, but now i can get past 40. :)
you just need some practise. DONT give up, no matter how frustrating it may be
if your chain breaks. if you follow the rules, and start over when your chain breaks,
chances are, one of the times, you will get better. gradually. it may take awhile though.
this requires patience.
This post in conjunction with this video from youtube ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkeKPlBYYbs ) helped me immensely (as I mentioned in my earlier post on this page)
the line that truly helped a lot was the "make sure you go at least 3 steps and turn once, kind of like an L" (paraphrased).
edit/add: OH OH! and while I'm chaining Baltoy, something else I realized myself while doing my first Starly - you do NOT need to go into every sparkly patch of grass! if there's not four patches or if you can't walk at least 3-4 steps to get to the patch and possibly include a turn then simply walk around the grass so you do NOT go into one of the patches, and after 50 steps reset your Radar :)
if you want a shiny, keep resetting at 40. its the highest the shiny rate will go.
also i have found something that has helped me a lot. if you arent getting good chains,
save and quit on the route or town closest to where you are trying to chain. restart, go back
and try again. keep retrying until your chances seem higher.
i havent read this anywhere nor have i found it anywhere, but has REALLY helped me.
it may reset some chances in the coding. it helped me get 7 shiny elekid! ^.^
if this does not help you, please inform me.
Oh yeah, if you want a shiny bronzor/bronzong, just follow the same guide, but have a pokemon with Magnet Pull...
Because Bronzor is the only pokemon you can find in grass. That is steel.
Other than Magnemite. That could take a while though. Yup.
Any other abilities that help with making a certain type of pokemon appear is also VERY good indeed.
My friend is having trouble chaining buizel.
When he handed the DS over to me(during battle) the next patch was a shiny...
...
Mareep. :cool:
But we laughed too hard, and my friend hit the turn off button on accident. :dazed:
...We began laughing harder. :crackup:
Anyway...
Also having trouble looking for the entire PP restore thing. Murgh.
And anybody know if Storm Drain attracts water pokemon? I would imagine it does, but...
If not for damn Starly I would have gotten a pretty decent chain here. It is incorrect to say only bidoof appears (going back to original top few posts of this thread). Also, with the odds the way they are for seeing shinies without attempting this, I still found and caught a shiny zubat on my diamond in the first tunnel you enter in the game. Wow for luck, right? That was when I was only passing through and battling the trainers. Golbat keeps trying to evolve (damn you nintendo) but will not I know until I get the other pokedex.
Also encountered a shiny another time on my friend's platinum but the safari balls have always been weak when it comes to catching anything, except maybe eggsecute or tauros since r/b/y.
