Warning for People without a Heart
This thread contains dangerously high levels
of cuteness. Please continue on with Caution.

Thanks very much for taking the time to check it out my art thread, I hope it won't disappoint!

I'm still very new to these forums so lets start off with a little background info shall we? I'm Hotaru, I've been working towards a career in art for 8 years now. I'm 18 and about to attend my 2nd year of college, I'm majoring in Graphic Arts which has become a passion of mine. Most of my work that you'll see (the anime stuff, anyways) is a mix of traditional and digital media. I hand-draw and ink most of the stuff by hand, and use either Adobe Photoshop Elements, Oc, or Illustrator to shade and color.

I run a virtual pokemon pet store on another site called Gaia Online, and I've posted my art on many different forums under the name Hotaru-Neko. So if you recognize my stuff but are suspicious because my username is a bit off, threat not folks! I'm the same Hotaru. :'D

Because my shop is so demanding not only art wise, but time wise, I do not take requests. I wish I could, but between school and other commitments on other sites it would be unfair to everyone and most likely they would just not get done. I do have a rather large assortment of drawings, so hopefully you'll find something that suits your fancy.

I have only a few requests as to behavior in my thread, so please take some time to read them over!

You are allowed to use my Pokemon art for sigs and such, but please only use them on PE2k. Much of my Pokemon art was done for use on another site for that very reason and most definally do not use them as "sig pets" in any shape or form.

You are not allowed to use any of my OC art, or any of my portfolio pieces at all. You are allowed to look at them for long periods of time tough! :D

Please don't quote pictures! D:' I'm a dial-upper folks, so I'm going to try and make the loading time as painless as possible by using thumbnails, do not defeat the purpose of them! ;-;'

Once again I don't do requests! I know someone will still miss this despite it being mentioned twice and once even being bolded. :hungry:

To wrap things up don't spam, be nice, all Pe2k rules apply... You know the drill!

And if I haven't bored you to death yet.. you shall be rewarded with ARTZ! ;O

3 Objects Project
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/0903/zeldagirl/th_nibbleskittycup.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/zeldagirl/nibbleskittycup.jpg)
I had just finished taking my Basic Drawing class a month before 2D started. Basic was HELL, all we did was draw still life that had to look as real as possible. Being a cartoonist it was very difficult for me to have almost no artistic license. All of our homework assingments where to do 3 objects: one had to be overlapping the other. [U]Always, It was a nightmare. I was pleasently surprised though in 2D that our first project was another 3 object piece, but this time we could do WHATEVER we wanted with it! We could draw to the edge of the paper (definint no no in Basic) we could mess with it's actual size (HUGE no no in basic) and pretty much had open range to our project. (ZOMG MR. TORU WOULD OF DIEEED) The Cat is a lucky kitty I bought at 12 at night while we where driving threw Vegas on a trip to California, the carrot was my late bunnys favorite toy, and the background was actually a little cup that belonged to my 101 year old great great grandmother. It was so nice to work with objects that actually MEANT something to me again. Done completely with pastels.

Bird Tripdic
(Meant to be viewed as a whole)
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/0903/zeldagirl/th_birdiess3.gif (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/zeldagirl/birdiess3.gif)http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/0903/zeldagirl/th_birdiess2.gif (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/zeldagirl/birdiess2.gif)http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/0903/zeldagirl/th_birdiess.gif (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/zeldagirl/birdiess.gif)
This was done for my 2D class last spring, we had to pick a picture of a real animal and draw it three times using different techniques: Curvilinear, Geometric, and Abstract. The middle one is my abstract piece, and it is actually taken from the back of the birds neck where it's feathers kind of ruffle up, it looked a lot like a moutain to me so that's what it turned into! Done with number .oo5, 1, 3, and 5 Micron pens.

Bracelet Dipdic
(Meant to be viewed together)
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/0903/zeldagirl/th_bacelet2.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/zeldagirl/bacelet2.jpg)http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/0903/zeldagirl/th_braclet.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/zeldagirl/braclet.jpg)
Simmilar to the animal project, this time we had to do it with a man-made object. Mine was a Bracelet that my mom gave to me last christmas, it didn't cost very much, but it was very beautiful. The paper collage flower was made out of only shapes I found within the bracelet, very fun. The other piece was mixed media: Paint, Sharpie, and a number 5 Micron.

5 word Project
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/0903/zeldagirl/th_thespines.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/zeldagirl/thespines.jpg)
Do you want to see someone frustrated with a piece of paper? Well you should of seen me almost ripping it up 10 minutes before class started. This was my final, my mom's going threw a divorce and it's been.. a mess. It happened a few days after class started, and although I tried not to let it get the better of me, I was lagging behind almost all semester due to things always coming up on the weekends projects where due. This doubled as a gift to my boyfriend, and because I was rushing, my Prismacolor colored pencils set mysteriously vanishing, and virtually having no time to complete the piece due to me trying to get another in on time (which didn't, and still isn't done) I was in tears at how much I messed this one up. It was still a gift to my boyfriend, and I thought for my first really large-scale ink job, the lineart looked pretty good.. It shall be posted for all to see.

::looks at picture and realizes how bazaar it looks:: ...and no I wasn't high when I did it. D:' the project was a challenge to include 4 randomly drawn words, plus one of your choice into one piece of work. my words : Magnet, Ladle, knot, pyramid, and the one I chose was Ramen. Done with every Micron pen under the sun, Crayola colored pencils, and a recently added touch of Prisma markers.

These are really good, I like them a lot. I like the Bulbasaur the best.

I have an art thread of my own, just in case you wanted to check it out. *coughlinkonsicough* :tongue3:

Amazing! Much better than the typical stuff around here. I'm no fan of cuteness, but your style has its charm.

Especially the Nidoking. I want one.

Well tough. Becuase I've already stolen it and hidden it in my brrom cupboard.

These are awesome. You Oekaki, I gather? I used to... before my tablet died. D:

Sorry for the delay! ^ ^;

Mario: Thanks! My favorite Pokemon is Bulbasaur so I'm happy to hear I did it some justice :'D I'm going to be heading to my grandma's for dinner soon, but I'll definally be checking out yours and some other fanart threads when I come back.

Argento: Great to hear, and thank you very much. <3

Tombi: Wait a minute. if the Nidoking is in the cupboard, and you don't seem to have one.. where is he? http://graphics3.gaiaonline.com/images/template/smiles/icon_gonk.gif

Actually, I've only completed one Oekaki. =D' ::has no patience::

Calypso: Thanks and those evolutionary lines are some of my favorites! xD <3

May I ask if you use AOL? I remember when I used it, it would automatically compress JPG's and make them look horrible. Anyways, I'm not a fan of PNG's being a Dial-upper. I use the "save for web" feature which can give you a very PNG-ish look while keeping the file size to the bare minimum.

Calypso

Nope, I use Internet Explorer. And I know what you mean, high quality Jpg's can work well, though in some cases on the first post they look a little blurry (unless thats just my damn comp =PP), whereas your banner looks almost perfect. But then again the images are smaller. Never mind though, it doesn't stop teh almighty cuteness. I've got my eye on that Nidorina xP

OHHH

Ok, totally know what the problem is now.

See, I am a pretty lazy person. When you upload something from photobucket it automatically makes those little convenient thumbnails... http://graphics3.gaiaonline.com/images/template/smiles/icon_ninja.gif and after a hard day of trying to set up the thread, they where just so tempting I tell you! I shall make some better ones when I get the chance though, since I can see now they are quite a bit more blurry than I would like them to be.

They look OK when you click on them though, right? Some of them had to be saved at 80% because of filesize limits on the website I use them on, but none of them noticeably have that static sort of look the thumbnails do on my computer.

I'm going to try and get some of my real media art up.. though this might take awhile. D: Crappy digital camera + horrible picture taking skillz= Mission impossible.

Amazing how there are a lot of talented artists here in PE2K. O_O

I really like your art! =D It's incredibly cute! o.o

One thing that I'm constantly wondering about is how such great artists can make their art so....anime like! =O If I'm not mistaken, but are you using a tablet to draw your art? :3 If so, I would like to know what program you use the tablet to draw. x3 I.e. Photoshop, Paint, etc?

Those pictures are awsome! ;D Anyway, to the point, you should save your pics in PNG, like Icey said, but apart from that, your artwork is some of the best I've seen here on PEK2, and I've been a member of this forum for more than a year.

They look perfect when you click on them, just at a first glance they look blurry. May I suggest posting links instead?

The new cat is so cute ^^. Remind me of mine a little o_o.

Oh and some of the pokemon images remind me of Sutio Ratio (which is always good ;DD)

Hotaru Pachirisu
07-14-2007, 06:46 PM
Calypso: Nooooo. XD; Oh well, at least I got threw a whole page without someone mentioning Sutio Ratio~ ;-; Regardless, thank you.

Links would be easier on me for sure, but as someone who enjoys strolling threw art threads myself, (unless it's just 1 or 2 pieces) I don't really have the patience to go threw every picture and find myself just randomly clicking links. I like the convenience of a little preview, seeing something that interests me, then enlarging it to see the deals if I want to. You know, something similar to browsing someones DA gallery. So I've adopted doing so in my own threads. ^ ^

Do you mean The glass cat? =D

DratiniLover: Read my last few replys, I explain why I don't use PNG's and why the previews are blurry. (That will hopefully be fixed sometime today, at least some of them) <3 And wowie what a compliment, thanks so much!

Argento: Your patience was rewarded! BD; not very good quality, but it gets the job done. ::nods::

Jet: Yeah, I have far too many Pokemon I need to finish ATM, but hopefully as I complete new work and post up some more older stuff I can slowly fill up some would-be requests. Two Pidgeys with one stone! :hungry: ::Bricked::

ChronoPika: Most of my Pokemon is drawn, an inked by hand, but I do darken the outline and do the shade coloring thing in one of 3 different programs: Photoshop elements, OpenCanvas, and Adobe Illustrator. (Elements is prolly the easiest one to get, 60$ at your local Wal-mart. )

Bulbasaur, oddish, Delcatty, and Contest eevee, and the turtle birthday picture where all done exclusively in Illustrator.

Growlithe, Riolu, Chise, Anthro Hotaru-Neko, Dawn Alaska's Portrait, Hotaru-Neko, Amy Headshot, Kat love Sunny, Remi, and Let it Snow where all drawn in Open Canvas, but all the cel shaded pieces where colored in elements.

Everything else was drawn and inked by hand, and colored in Elements (with the exception of chingling, it was colored in Illustrator. and 911 tribute that was done all within Elements )

As for how people get things to look anime like.. I have no idea. :surp: It just takes a lot of years of practice. I've gotten headshots down pretty well I think but doing full bodys really freaks me out. I can do it some days, and make a total mess of it other days.

I guess the only advice I can give you is to take a look at an atrists work and do some mental deconstruction. I always found it especially useful to look at unfinished work, or doodles. They are usually done very quickly, and provide a striped down/crash course-like look at how an artist sets up their work.

Hope I helped!

Sorrry ^^;

But Suta Ratio does own. Nonetheless though I like your design's better, they look more natural to the pokemon =3. I'm thinking 'tis the shading that causes an obvious resembelance =P

::snort:: Alright I guess I have to pull out my little explanation.. XD

This.. is Bombchu :'D

I made him for my birthday event. As I'm a huge zelda fan I've always associated bombchu's and Pikachu's together (name, colors, pointy ears, lolz)

It was also nothing I've seen done before so... here it is. <3

I like how it turned out xD

as a little info on the critter: Bombchu is a electric/steel type Pokemon with the natural ability to use both Self destruct and Explosion.

It is much faster than your adverage Pikachu, but can become reckless as to keeping track of where it's been and where it's going.

for those of you non zelda fans (shame on you! D< ) here is what a bombchu looks like http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v437/PokeHaven/bombchuzelda.jpg

I've associated this lil' thing called a ChuChu with the real Pikachu. Sad. :|
