That would be a whole lot of stuff to cover!

But the official site is a great resource that covers the things you need: http://www.dragonball.com/ - that's the first season of Dragon Ball. I think it's vital to know what happened in the first season to really appreciate what happens in Dragon Ball Z. There's a list of characters, good and bad. And story summaries for the different sagas.

After you're done with that, then check out Dragon Ball Z's official site: http://www.dragonballz.com/ . It has all the same information, but of course, for Dragon Ball Z.
