Hey there, to anyone who knows me. Once again I failed to keep up appearances, and once again I'm gonna try to keep returning. Hopefully having somewhere definite to post will make it easier, rather than me writing and deleting posts before I even post them...

Anyway, 3D modeling is a new hobby of mine. The main problem is reference material. To create characters, for example, it's difficult without pictures of the front, sides, or back (Back's not always needed, but it helps). So, there's the problem: how can someone learn to model without reference material?

The answer hit me right in the face as I was playing Diamond: Pokemon. Older games lack perspective, showing the buildings directly from the front (Almost), and the ground from directly above, and combined with the use of tiles, getting an approximate idea of size and depth is easy, essentially meaning all you need is a picture from the front.

To cut my long rambling short, I decided to practice modeling by modeling areas from the Pokemon games in 3D, starting with Fire Red. This isn't for a game or anything of the sort, but I'd really like feedback on them, especially from people who've played the games.

Well, to the point, here's my first (relatively) complete area model, Pallet Town:

Wireframe (http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/2914/pallettown4zh0.png)

Any comments would be appreciated. Modeling Pallet Town taught me a lot as it is, so any further comments on how I could improve the look of it would only add to that.

Ah, and my new work in progress:

ZENAKU BABY! hold me

Good work on these, though I recommend taking the balck strokes down on those pieces just a little. I haven't worked much with 3D modelling so I'm not quite sure where those strokes came from. I think the next step would be to give depth to the shoreline, or details to the flowers. D/P prides itself on graphics, and these simple designs look too old-school.

GG, they were made with Blender 3D, which is a free modeling program. Has a built in game engine too, so it's actually possible to make games.

Oh, I'd love to, but it's embarrassing with people watching...

The black strokes are an edge effect that's applied when the model's rendered. Best used with toon shading, but since the fences and the like don't use textures, I turned it on to define the edge of them.

And I love my flowers! =[ Ah well, crappy 3D flowers can't compare to DPs. DP uses 2D flowers and trees, after all. Fences are 2D too, so they don't have to worry about detailing them with crappy textures...Enough excuses though =x

I'd like to work on the shoreline a bit, but to be honest, I felt it was more trouble than it was worth. The grass and water are all just one big flat image, so detailing a shore would force me to remove the water from the image and redo the grass texture. I'll try, but that'll have to wait until after Reds bedroom.

EDIT: Turned the lines down from 10 to 5, so it should be a little better. I still need them to define the fences, though.

Damn Zenaku. If anyone should be doing the graphics for the next 3D handheld platform Pokemon game, it should be you.

These look as good as the DP graphics. O___O

Can I ask why you made the outlines so thick? It looks good, but I want to know. =P

I'm not at that level yet. Don't get my hopes up. =[

Oh, all right, here. A screen of Pallet with the edge option turned off:

Here's a little extra too. Before starting Pallet, I was trying out characters and attempted KOS-MOS from Xenosaga. Head's mostly complete, but I took a break from it since I didn't have the right angled resource pic (Doing the body was just frustrating; I couldn't get it to mirror the other side correctly):

Maybe a less thick stroke, something along the lines of 1 (whatever measurement it goes by).

Looking good though.

Looks cool Zenaku. An original idea. Looks great w/wo the edge option.
One of Saphron City would look pretty cool, with the big Silph co. in it.

Yay Zenaku's back!

I think the one without the edge option looks the best, but the other ones still look great! Good work mate!

Oh, sorry, got caught up with little stuff again.

As far as those edges go, Blenders edge option is known to be a little lacking, but it's decent for small toon shading.

For the task at hand though, seems I'll be putting off Reds room too. Did the TV, got scared by the bed. If I do another town, it'll likely be Saffron, ala Callums suggestion, or Celadon, cause I just like Erika. :P

For the time being though, I've decided to through another try at a character. Unless I can learn to model with little good reference material, I'll never get better, after all. It's actually coming along pretty nicely, for a head anyway. Just need to finish the hair and model it around the head. A cup of sugar to whoever can guess what anime/manga character it is:

Sure thing.

The site there also has tutorials, and an in-depth Wiki called "Noob to Pro", to get you started. If you need to know something specific though, feel free to ask me. Better than having to search for answers, at any rate.

Phew, been a while, and a bit busy. Anyway, that character was L, from Death Note:

http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/4598/86934354un3.png

Not completely finished, and I'd like to have a go at the body once the head is, but I went ahead anyway and tested out a little cel-shading trick I managed to find somewhere. Best thing about Ls model is that the pupils are easily movable, and his eyelids can close. Not wow major, but nice if I finish and decide to animate him.

The real reason for the update is another little work I finished (Don't I just love multi-tasking?). In fact, right after taking screenshots, I accidentally loaded another file and almost lost the last hour of work. Lucky for me, it was present in the tmp folder, so that's good. You'll know what it is:

High Line Ver. (http://img104.imageshack.us/img104/4640/house1uv1.png)
Low Line Ver. (http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/1959/house2tx9.png)
No Line Ver. (http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/570/house3fe8.png)

A big difference if you compare it to the original (http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/6870/pallet2uh8.png) version I did, at least in that the details can be seen close up, and the glass includes reflections.

Any comments on the design, and which version you like best, would be appreciated.

Yeah, it's been a while. Good luck if you're gonna try out 3D, and I'll tell you now that reference images from the front and side are the easiest ways to model, unless it has an easy shape (Don't remember if I mentioned that earlier or not).

Having had no real success with modeling Pokemon, I decided to throw another attempt at it, and style it a bit, coming up with this:

Looks more like Regidiamond than Regice though...

Well, it's been a while. Had some family troubles of late, and I'll be moving in a few weeks. So, before my internet finally cuts off, I figured I'd try and force some time into PE2K now, and do whatever else I have to do once my internet cuts out (I have about 30-40 manga to read, and countless games to play =x ).

Anyway, to start, I figured I'd show my current work, roughly...80-90% complete. Since I'm good with human heads now, I decided to leave the head till last, making this a headless body. Regardless, as my first full body, I think it looks good even if it is dead.

http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/4661/hikaribodydq0.png

And before anyone asks, there won't be any panty shots. Well, ok, maybe if someone does ask...

Anyway, it'll be nice talking to you guys again, assuming my internet doesn't cut out for another week.

Was hoping for a little criticism, with this being my first (near) complete character model, but ah well. I finished the body completely, anyway.

http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/5885/hikari3hd6.png

The hands look a little weird. I know. Until I rig the body, the hand will remain flat, so I can't stop it from looking weird. I tried posing the fingers manually, like I did the arms, but they looked even worse, so I'll wait until it's rigged to make better poses.

Anyway, opinions. The clothes, scarf, face, whatever you like and whatever you don't like.

Didn't know I was making banners, but at least they look good, wherever they are.

Yeah, when making the hands, I spaced the fingers out as much as possible. Until they're rigged and posed, they really will look weird and all. The nose, isn't actually big, that's a problem with the shading.

I reduced the shading for the face and made the nose look smaller, so that shouldn't be a problem now.

Thanks for the comments

EDIT: Haven't done the rigging yet, but I managed to pose it naturally.

Zenaku, just dropping by to say how impressed I am at all your work! All these images are amazing, and I especially like the Regice one. Heh, even though it's diamond-esque, I don't see any way that it could be made to look more ice-like anyway. ^^
