Hating Maria Susannon

Ugh, the parts where I had to type with a complete disregard for grammar were hell. I hope that they don’t detract from my overall grade, though, because that would be annoying.

Part one

---

Maria Melody Violet Susannon looked lazily around the classroom, running a slender hand through her flowing, platinum blonde hair. Her eyes were a beautiful shade of sparkling ocean blue, glistening as if they contained the seas themselves. Of course, having large bodies of water in your eyes is probably not a good thing, so let’s drop that subject.

Maria was tall and thin enough to be anorexic (but wasn’t), and she had curves in all of the right places. Her long hair reached her knees, and was always well-groomed, even when she had just gotten up. Her face was pale and radiant, like the surface of the moon itself. She had plump pink lips, and a light dusting of freckles over her nose.

When she was young, the girl’s mother had been unfortunately diagnosed with lung cancer, and died soon after. Her father, full of pent up grief and rage at his wife’s death, decided to take it out on his only daughter, having to take her to the hospital many times to treat broken bones and burns. When Maria was older, her father began to beat her more severely, forcing her to leave home and take to the streets.

When she was roaming the alleyways, a kindly mage had taken her in, and she had been learning how to use psychic powers ever since.

Despite her traumatic past, this girl was still a kind, loving, gentle, smart and beautiful person, loved by all. Well, not quite…

---

Elizabeth O’Rly looked up from her test, and glared at the beauty queen sitting across the room from her. Maria, or Mary to her friends, had finished the difficult algebra test in mere seconds, and then took to distracting the class around her by practicing telekinesis. Making objects fly around the room and occasionally hit someone in the head was her idea of a good time, apparently.

Elizabeth herself was quite pretty, but looked like a pile of Raticate droppings when compared to the goddess that was Maria.

She had medium length, honey-coloured hair, and pretty brown eyes. She was slightly shorter than average for girls her age, and quite slender. Not as stick-thin as Maria, but thin nonetheless. She had a rather mischievous sort of face, and had a rather cunning sort of look about her. She was quick-witted, to say the least.

Unlike the girl that she detested with every fibre of her being, Elizabeth had a rather normal life. A normal family, normal friends, normal everything. Sometimes she thought that she’d kill for a bit of excitement, but it never came.

Grumbling as an airborne chair almost decapitated her; the short girl ducked her head down again to continue with her test.

---

Daniel Fisher stifled a snort as he saw Elizabeth duck to avoid a flying chair. However he wasn’t laughing for long, as he saw that it had changed its flight path and curved towards him. He flinched, bracing himself for the impact, but it never came. The boy looked towards the girl controlling the chair, and she smiled sweetly at him.

Daniel had short, spiky brown hair and hazel eyes. He was tall and muscular, very much into sports, and luckily, didn’t have curves in all of the right places. He was kind, though, and one of the most popular people in his class. However, he wasn’t too smart, and failing almost all of his classes.

The boy looked back at the girl that he (and everyone else) lusted after, and she winked seductively at him.

---

“Alright class, hand in your tests and you can go,” said the maths teacher, after the bell had rung.

Maria leapt up and threw her test up, floating it over to the balding man. He plucked it out of the air and smiled kindly at his favourite student. Flashing her pearly white teeth at him, Maria walked out of the room, swinging her hips rhythmically.

Elizabeth glared daggers at the girl’s back, and stood up. Slamming the test down on the teacher’s desk, she stalked out of the room, muttering incoherent insults under her breath.

Daniel looked over at the two girls – Elizabeth was obviously not happy. Scratching his head, he wondered what exactly the matter was.

---

“Hey, Cherrie!” squealed Maria, opening her locker and taking out an unhappy Glameow. The Pokemon hissed at her, as spending countless hours cramped in a locker wasn’t her idea of an exciting day.

Ignoring the normal type’s display of agitation, the platinum blonde admired the cat-like creature.

The Glameow had well-groomed grey fur, with the tips of her ears, her paws and her muzzle a milky-white colour. She yawned, showing an array of pointed white teeth. Cherrie’s eyelids were the same colour as the inside of her ears – light pink. She had a long, spiralling tail that had a puff of light grey fur on the end, and was waving it around.

“Glameow!” she mewed, twitching her whiskers.

Elizabeth rolled her eyes, feeling sorry for the Pokemon. She stuffed her books into her locker, and took out her bag. Sneering at Maria, she trekked out of the school gates. Plodding through the grey, dreary streets, the girl sighed.

“This is boring…” she muttered to herself.

Tearing a single green leaf from a tree, the girl proceeded to tear it into tiny pieces. Sprinkling the bits of leaf over the ground, Elizabeth turned a corner, and walked down her driveway.

Opening the door and sauntering down the hallway, the girl entered her room and turned on her computer. Putting her bag down and taking off her shoes, the girl sat on her bed and peeled off her sweaty, smelly socks.

She smiled at the red and white orb on her bedside table. It held in it her only Pokemon, Tali. She had raised the Pokemon from an egg, and had trained her well.

Wrinkling her nose in disgust at the putrid smell wafting from the socks, Elizabeth sat down at her computer, which had just finished loading. Opening her internet client, she first checked her email.

“Hey, Maria sent me an email. I wonder what she wants… and how did she get my email address?” murmured the girl to herself, clicking on the flashing icon.

hey lizzzzz,

maria here. i waz wondering y u were glaring at me 2day at skool

i hope ur not angry at me

plz meet me at the park at 4, I need 2 talk 2 u!

Grimacing at Maria’s atrocious concept of grammar, Elizabeth checked the clock. It was close to four. Getting up again with a groan, the girl slipped on a pair of sandals, snatched up her Pokeball (you never know when you’d need the protection), and headed out again.

The walk to the park was dull and uninteresting; with every house she passed looking more and more like the last. At one point, she thought she saw a dead Zubat on the road, but when she had gotten closer it had turned out to be a black plastic bag.

As she reached the park (which wasn’t really what one would call a park – it was more like a field with virtually no grass and a withered tree to one side), she saw a shining figure leaning against the black, gnarled tree.

“Lizzie!” Maria called, her voice melodious and angelic.

“Hi Maria!” said Elizabeth voice through gritted teeth, smiling a false smile.

The blonde girl gave her ‘friend’ a lung-crushing hug, and smiled sweetly. Elizabeth almost gagged from the amount of perfume that Maria was wearing – she smelt so sweet that the brown-eyed girl wanted the throw up.

“Lizzie, you aren’t mad at me, are you?” asked Maria, creasing her brow.

“Oh, not at all!” Elizabeth lied through her teeth, “I was just jealous of your powers!”

“That’s good!” smiled Maria, brightening up considerably.

It was then that she spied Elizabeth’s Pokeball, that was clutched tightly in the girl’s hand.

“Oh, you have a Pokemon? Let’s have a battle!”

Not waiting for a response from her opponent, Maria backed away a few meters and whistled. Suddenly, a grey blur fell out of the sky.

“Glameow!” cried Cherrie, leaping from seemingly nowhere.

“Um… okay… go Tali, I suppose,” said Elizabeth uncertainly, throwing the orb.

In a burst of light, a cat-like figure emerged from the opened sphere. She had a slender figure, with a long, forked tail. Her lavender coat shone magnificently in the sunlight, and ruby red jewel on her forehead sparkled magnificently. Her amethyst eyes gazed calmly at her opponent as she waved her tail in the air.

“Espeon,” Tali rasped, looking back at her trainer.

“An Espeon?!” exclaimed Maria in disbelief, “Is that all you have?! Cherrie, use Slash!”

“Try to dodge it, Tali, and then use Psychic!” countered the Espeon’s trainer.

The grey cat leapt towards Tali with a surprising burst of speed, catching her target off guard. The psychic type frantically tried to scramble out of the way, but the Glameow raked her claws through the Espeon’s silky coat, tearing through flesh and causing the Pokemon to howl in pain.

In an attempt to fight back, the Eeveelution focused all of her energy into the jewel on her head and sent a wave of psychic energy at the Glameow, slamming her into the hard dirt, denting the earth.

“No, Cherrie!” squealed Maria, a few octaves higher than would be bearable, “Use the super special awesome attack that always wins the fight!”

The normal type nodded, and gave her opponent an apologetic look. Cherrie’s eyes began to glow blue, and a wind began to blow, stirring up dust and rustling the emerald green blades of grass. Storm clouds moved in, and thunder rumbled in the distance. By now, Elizabeth was freaking out, racking her brain for a way to stop the attack from hitting.

“Tali, try to hit it with a Swift!” she yelled desperately, hoping that it would work.

The Espeon once again focused all of her power into her jewel, and this time summoned sparkling yellow stars. With a swing of her head, Tali shot the Swift at her opponent, hoping to stop the incoming attack. However, as soon as the attack got close, Cherrie’s eyes glowed brighter, and the stars halted in midair.

“Glameow!”

With a cry, the Glameow imitated the psychic type’s movements, and shot the Swift right back. Tali gasped and rolled to the side, out of the path of the stars. Unfortunately, they changed their path, and exploded on the Espeon’s back.

“No, Tali!” cried Elizabeth, “Try to use Morning Sun!”

The psychic type tried to call the sun to heal her, but the thunderclouds that had rolled in were too thick, and the sun couldn’t shine through.

The glow that started in the Glameow’s eyes had now spread throughout her body, and she was crackling blue energy. With a yowl, the normal type leapt up into the air, and shot a vibrant rainbow beam at her opponent. Tali, thinking fast, shot a Psybeam at the oncoming attack, meeting it in midair. For a few tense moments, the two beams matched, crackling in air as each Pokemon tried to surpass the other.

“Now, Cherrie! Crank it up a notch!” screeched Maria over the crackle of the attacks clashing.

Cherrie let out a surprisingly scary snarl, which caused her foe to falter. With the momentary lapse of concentration in her opponent, the normal type was able to turn up the power of her beam and engulf the weaker psychic attack.

There was an explosion, and then the field was shrouded in dust. When the erosion cleared, a large crater became obvious to the trainers. Elizabeth peeked into the crater, and saw Tali lying still in a pool of her own blood, her foreleg broken and half of her left ear all but blown off.

“Tali!” screamed Elizabeth, running down into the crater.

The Espeon looked up at her trainer with a sad smile, and gave a weak groan.

“It’s okay Tali, we’ll get you help…” whispered the Pokemon’s trainer frantically, fumbling for the psychic type’s Pokeball.

“Oh my gosh, I’m SO sorry!” squealed Maria, jumping into the crater. “I’ll heal her for you!”

Before Elizabeth could protest, Maria started to glow blue. When she put her hand on Tali, the Espeon took on the glow as well, and her open wounds started to heal. Her foreleg snapped back into place, and her ear stopped bleeding.

“Well, I’m off now, see you later!” Maria remarked, leaping out of the crater.

The brown-haired girl stroked her Espeon, frowning at the psychic type’s mangled ear. Maria would pay for doing this to her companion; she’d make sure of it.

---

Maria sauntered into her house, slamming the door shut behind her. She stroked Cherrie’s head, stoked about her recent win.

“Hey Kate!” she sang, twirling on the spot.

The sound of boots on the floor alerted her to her adoptive mother’s approach. The female mage was beautiful – not as beautiful as her daughter, of course, but still very pretty.

She had short, blood red hair, with gold highlights. Her eyes were a beautiful shade of emerald green, flecked with gold. She had a small nose, and luscious red lips. She was very tall (and had to duck when she entered a room to avoid being decapitated by a ceiling fan), and very thin.

“Hey Mary, how was your day?” she greeted, using Maria’s nickname.

“Oh, it was great!” exclaimed the blonde, “Cherrie and I won a battle!”

“That’s great, dear,” congratulated Kate, giving her adopted daughter a pat on the head before walking away.

Once she was out of earshot, Maria looked at her Glameow, “You almost screwed up today, you know. If you had killed that Espeon, we’d have a big fat lawsuit on our hands. We must have some more… training.”

---

“That was a close call, wasn’t it?”

Elizabeth looked down at her Espeon as they walked home, scowling at the damage that Maria had done to her Pokemon’s ear. Tali looked up at her trainer and smiled softly, thankful to be alive. She shook out her lavender coat, dislodging a few clumps of dirt that had collected on the silky fur.

The pavement was hard and rough under the Espeon’s paws, but she didn’t really mind. She moved to the side, stepping onto the soft green grass. As a psychic type, she was in tune with emotions, and this Espeon could sense joy all around her, but loathing from her trainer.

She frowned, hoping that Elizabeth wouldn’t do anything stupid. As they turned into the driveway, she felt the familiar falling feeling as she got sucked back into her Pokeball.

---

Elizabeth went back into her home, and back into her room. Kicking off her sandals and tossing Tali’s Pokeball on the bed, the girl sat back down at the computer. Logging onto her instant messenger, and looked at the ‘online’ list.

“Daniel’s on…” she murmured, clicking on his screen name.

Elizabeth had been in love with Daniel Fisher for a long, long time. They had been best friends as toddlers, but had grown up in separate primary schools. Now, in year seven, they were in the same class! While the two were no longer as close as they once were, they still talked occasionally. The girl brought up a chat window, and smiled to herself.

<<oXo~LiZzY~oXo: Hey Dan!>>
<<-dan-: hi liz, wats up?>>
<< oXo~LiZzY~oXo: Not much, you?>>
<<-dan-: nm>>
<<-dan-: lol>>
<< oXo~LiZzY~oXo: Hey, you know Maria Susannon?>>
<<-dan-: yh, shes hot lol>>
<<-dan-: I think im in love with her… lol>>

Elizabeth’s heart sank, knowing that unless she could unearth a dark secret about Maria (and that the same time, get revenge for hurting Tali), then there wasn’t a chance in hell that Dan would ever fall in love with her. Despite being close to tears, she kept typing like she was fine.

<< oXo~LiZzY~oXo: Well, her Glameow almost killed my Espeon in a fight today!>>
<<-dan-: omg, relly????>>
<< oXo~LiZzY~oXo: Yeah, Tali almost died, and she lost part of her ear!>>
<<-dan-: omg, that’s meen!>>
<< oXo~LiZzY~oXo: Tell me about it!>>
<<-dan-: g2g, cya>>
<< oXo~LiZzY~oXo: Bye, I guess.>>

Elizabeth frowned – she would do all that she could to keep Maria away from Daniel.

Hating Maria Susannon

Part two

“So, how exactly are we going to do this?” purred a silky voice in Elizabeth’s head.

“Well, I was thinking that you should confront the Glameow – she looked apologetic when she used that attack on you, so she might be willing to help our plight,” answered the girl, looking as if she was conversing with herself to anyone outside of the conversation.

The Espeon she was talking to furrowed her brow. “And what if she isn’t?”

“Then,” said Elizabeth, “We use force.”

Tali grinned, showing pointed, razor-sharp teeth. “I like the way you think, Lizzy.”

The two shared a laugh, and then fell into a slightly awkward silence. Elizabeth smiled fondly at her Pokemon, and thought back to that day, eight years ago, that she had hatched.

---

“It’s hatching!” squealed five-year-old Elizabeth, gazing intently at the shivering egg that she’d been given as a birthday present just one week prior.

The brown and tan egg was rocking around on the carpet, small pieces of shell flying off in random directions. Suddenly, a wet, brown leg smashed its way out, quickly followed by another. Small cracks began appearing near the top of the egg, and soon it shattered, revealing an ear.

Impatient, the small child began to pull the holes apart, tiny hands easily breaking through the thin shell. Soon, the egg was completely destroyed, and there, lying in the fragments, was a tiny ball of soggy fur, her breathing laboured from the amount of energy she exerted trying to break out of the egg.

Grabbing a towel, young Elizabeth wrapped up the newborn Eevee, and held the baby close to her chest.

“Eevee…” it murmured, before falling into a blissful slumber.

---

The purple cat-like Pokemon stared into her trainer’s eyes, and picking up on the girl’s thoughts. Tali smiled – being held against Elizabeth’s chest as a newborn was her very first memory.

The Espeon remembered how awkward it had been when she was still an Eevee, as she had no way to communicate her thoughts or feelings to her trainer, aside from gestures. One train of thought led to another, and soon she was contemplating the circumstances of her evolution.

---

“Come here Tali, I have something you show you!” beamed 7-year-old Elizabeth O’Rly.

The small, fluffy fox-like Pokemon tilted her head inquisitively, genuinely interested in what her best friend had to say.

“Since you hatched two years ago today, I went out and bought you something!” beamed Elizabeth, brandishing a light pink collar, with a shiny golden tag, “It cost me almost all of my pocket money, but it was worth it!”

The girl fastened the collar around her Pokemon’s neck, and the Eevee smiled, tears of gratitude forming in her eyes. She leapt upon her trainer, licking every inch of the girl’s face.

Suddenly, she felt a change. A tingling feeling had started at her paws, and was spreading throughout the rest of her body. She felt her body lengthen and grow taller, becoming more slender. The course, cream-coloured fuzz around her neck became shorter and finer, as did the rest of her fur.

The Eevee’s tail grew out, and split at the end, forming twin tips. A jewel grew on her forehead, and her eyes changed from brown to deep purple. Finally, her ears grew longer and wider, with pointed tips.

Tali the Espeon shook out her purple coat, and smiled at Elizabeth. The girl smiled back, and gave her newly-evolved Pokemon a big hug.

---

Tali smiled softly to herself, knowing that she was still wearing that very collar. Once again, Elizabeth spoke.

“So, we really should get back to work, eh?”

“I suppose…” yawned her Espeon friend, lying down on the bed next to her trainer.

“Alright, I’ve come up with a plan. Tomorrow, I’ll bring you to school in your Pokeball, and when everyone’s gone to class, I’ll hang back at the lockers. Now, I know for a fact that Maria keeps her Glameow in her locker for the whole day, so it’s just a matter of cracking her combination and getting the Glameow out. Once she’s out, try to make friends, and see if she’ll let you come home with her and watch everything that happens at her home from a distance,” said the girl, her mouth slightly dry from the long-winded speech that she just gave.

“Alright…” said Tali, “And how long will I have to do this?”

Elizabeth frowned slightly, “Well, there’s six periods, and each of them go for fifty minutes, and Maria takes her Glameow outside for recess and lunch, which go for fifteen and forty-five minutes respectively… so you have five hours, give or take a few minutes that you’ll have to hide during the room changes, as we’re not actually allowed to bring our Pokemon to school…”

“Hmm… five hours to win over a Glameow. I can do that.”

---

As the bell rang, all of the students collected their books from their lockers, and filed away to their first class.

“Bye, sweetie!” cooed Maria Susannon, bending at the waist for her locker to be head-height, and giving everyone a nice view up her miniskirt.

Elizabeth grimaced, and busied herself pretending to find the books that she had already removed from her locker, while clenching a marble-sized Pokeball in her sweaty palm. When the corridor had emptied and everyone was waiting for their teacher, she enlarged the sphere and tossed it.

“You know what to do?” she asked.

The psychic Pokemon nodded. “I befriend the Glameow and go home with her, and if the bell rings, or anyone comes, I hide.”

They gave a quick nod to each other, and then Elizabeth ran off to her class.

Tali scanned the lockers with her mind, searching for any sign of Pokemon life. It didn’t take her long, and soon she located the Glameow. Walking to the locker, she used her psychic powers to fiddle with the lock, opening it. As the piece of metal dropped to the ground, the grey Pokemon that was stuck inside leapt out, stretching her limbs. She turned and saw Tali, and gave the general appearance of a Stantler caught in headlights.

“Who are you?” the Glameow whispered in her native tongue.

“The name’s Tali. Remember, that Espeon you almost killed?” said Tali with a hint of sarcasm, not bothering to use telepathy for another Pokemon.

“Oh my Mew, I am so sorry about that, are you okay?” asked the Glameow, worry evident on her feline features.

“Don’t worry, I’m fine now, but I have a question for you,” smiled the Espeon, knowing that befriending this Pokemon would be easier than she thought.

“I’m all ears,” said the Glameow, smiling kindly at her new friend.

“What’s your name?” asked Tali, chuckling.

The Glameow laughed, “It’s Cherrie. An odd name, I know, but I didn’t choose it.”

“Who did?” inquired the Espeon politely, despite knowing already.

“Maria, my trainer,” spat Cherrie, with obvious contempt.

“Oh, my trainer doesn’t like her much,” said the psychic Pokemon.

The Glameow smirked. “And for good reason! You know how she’s always super-nice to everyone?”

Tali nodded mutely.

“Well, that’s just a show. She resents EVERYONE with a passion. Of course, she doesn’t say it, because it’d make her look bad!” Cherrie practically yelled, and by the end of her sentence, was visibly agitated.

Her friend stayed quiet, and when she spoke, it was barely a whisper, “Everyone?”

“Almost,” sneered the Glameow, “Except for that Daniel, she’s crazy about him! It’s always Daniel this, and Daniel that, and she knows that she can get him in a second. But she plays around to give your trainer hope – she read her mind in class, and knows that they share a common love interest.”

Tali was aghast, “But… but that’s terrible!”

“Tell me about it,” said Cherrie with a scowl, “She talks about your trainer like she’s some sort of disease – and that’s why she got me to use that super attack on you.”

“Wow…” the psychic Pokemon said softly, “And what about you? Does she treat you any different?”

“No. She treats me like a tool, and gives me long, gruelling training sessions that are complete and utter hell!” the normal type spat viciously, the resentment that she harboured for her trainer clear.

Tali made sure to choose her words carefully – one slip up and this Glameow may become suss to her plan. She put on her best ‘concerned’ face, frowning, and creasing her brow.’

“That’s… that’s horrible!” she said in a low voice, “But… how horrible is it?”

“You’d have to see it to believe it,” Cherrie said with a small frown.

It was then that a loud noise rang – it was the bell. Both of the Pokemon leapt up and looked around frantically for a place to hide. They heard footsteps and voices getting louder, and they knew they’d be discovered if they didn’t act fast. Diving onto her Glameow friend, Tali shut her eyes tightly and focused on the outside world that she’d seen through the window in the hallway.

With a small pop, they were both outside and out of danger. The Espeon smiled warmly at Cherrie, giving the normal type an affectionate nuzzle. They basked in the sunlight for a while more, comfortable with the silence. When they felt that they’d be alone in the corridor, Tali teleported them back inside.

“Cherrie, you said that the things that she does have to be seen to be believed, right?” asked the psychic type.

“Yeah, why?” replied the grey cat, tilting her head to one side.

“Well… Liz and I are trying to get revenge on your trainer, so…” Tali said, trailing off at the end.

“So you want to watch what she does and then tell your trainer?” guessed Cherrie.

The lavender furred Pokemon nodded, “Exactly. And I just want to know if I can.”

The normal type shrugged. “If it’ll get her away from me, all the power to you. But there’s something you need to know first. If she goes to jail, then I’ll be put down. You’ll need to find a way to get me before you turn her in.”

“And how do you suppose we go about with that?” inquired the psychic type.

Cherrie leaned closer, and spoke in a low voice, “I’ll let you in on a little secret. Maria never actually caught me. She got me registered in her name, but never actually put me in a Pokeball. That means that if you battled me, you could catch me like I was a wild Pokemon.”

Tali grinned, showing off rows of needle-sharp, pointed teeth. “Eureka.”
