Ash was down to one pokemon, so he decided to take a chance and sent his Charizard on Richie's Charmander, which was then defeated in one attack. Then, when Richie sent out his Pikachu, Charizard decided to go to sleep. Deemed unable to battle by the Refferee, Ash's Charizard lost, losing Ash the battle.

2. Ash couldn't battle May's father for a badge when they first met because Ash needed three pokemon to fight him, but he only had his Pikachu with him.
