View Full Version : Melee or Brawl?

Since I've seen the discussion on other places, but not here yet, I acutally want to know which people here prefer? From a casual and a competitive standpoint(state which you'd consider yourself)
Casually I don't mind Brawl. Its fun and laid back. Not hard to pick up really, and a skill gap doesn't make as big of a difference as it did in Melee, which I can see making it alot more appealing to casual players. Only major gripe with it here is alot less crazy, entertaining combos, like someone fluking at a low percentage vs a Falcon, and getting double GodKnee'd into a weak knee off the stage for death.
I just don't see it getting a competitive scene thats nearly as good as Melee. Playing in high level, AT LEAST AT THIS POINT, means playing campy, which, as a whole, makes for a boring match. Don't even feel like I need to get started on tripping, as anyone can see why its stupid. Theres also the lack of any real advance techs like wavedashing/landing/l-canceling/shffling. Combos also are MUCH more avoidable, which, although evening the skill gap, means less punishment for mistakes overall, which is something I don't think should be taken away, as a skill gap rewards those who acutally practice.
Overall, I still like Melee more(obvious from my post but yeah), but its not to say I hate Brawl, I just hate it in tourneys.
Was a Doc main Shiek/Marth as secondaries in Melee in case anyone cares.

I prefer Brawl. Its slow like the original SSB game. Melee was way to fast for me and everyone played as Fox and Falco :(

I agree with most of what you said. But the "fast slow" thing? What are you talking about?
Brawl has a cool adeventure mode, it can do wifi, and it has more players. Brawl all the way!

Well, Brawl is a lot slower when your fighting or at least thats what I think. I haven't done the SSE yet so I don't really know if its good or not

I'm gonna have to stick with SSBM, since it introduced me to the series. I love it and I always will love it.

High level Smash is insanely fast. Wave dashing/Lcanceling and such make it much faster paced, and the characters fall alot faster, which opens up more combos and such. Its why Melee matches last like 2 minutes, and Brawl 4-5 isn't uncommon.

Brawl beats melee BIGTIME except for the fact roy isnt in

Brawl for me, too. Can't beat the wide variety in stages and characters, and the number of extra things in the game (however pointless they may be) keep the player striving to unlock them all. Besides, if you like Melee so much, then just don't even play Brawl.

What? Brawl's slow like SSB 64? Damnit I'm cancelling my order. I almost did when I heard you couldn't wavedash.

Well, isn't Marth in? In my belief, Roy is the noob Marth and Marth could pown roy any day. I prefer SSBM though because I can pay attention to it better for some reason.

I like Brawl. Better graphics, more characters, SSE, Boss Battles, stickers, Stage Builder and Challenges.

And I prefer Brawl anyway because it has fast stages and stages that aren't that fast and better graphics and a lot more characters and it has my favorite Hedgehog and the Pokemon Trainer.

Maybe fast with no comparison, but here's some high level Melee. Check out the speed difference: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJTA9Y5e264
Edit: Forgot to post my opinion. <_<
In terms of gameplay and depth, definitely Melee. Melee had so many techs... Wavedashing, l-canceling, jump cancel grabs, crouch canceling... Comboing made it a lot more exciting. It was also a lot faster, which I like. To be fair, though, Brawl hasn't been fully played out yet, so not everything has been discovered.
Brawl with Melee gameplay would be a dream come true.

Brawl is better. More challenging computer at level 9, more characters, better graphics, and wifi.

Eh, I know it hasn't had everything discovered yet, since it took a few months to discover wavedashing, and M2King just posted some new combo with Marth the other day for Melee, but the comboing thing and the fact that Sakuri purposely made it more like a party game instead of a competitive one is what gets to me. The things they have found are just annoying as hell and we're the most annoying things in melee, like D3's chaingrab, and IC's infinite chaingrab on everyone.
Hmm..A tough choice indeed. Well, in that case I'll probably have to go with Melee.
Mostly because I love fast paced action (using wavedash), in my fighting games.
Needless to say, I'm not saying that Brawl is a terrible game.

I do believe the Smash series was a party game to begin with. What ever competitive scene it has is because people were like: "OH! I'll own you in this game! No one has been able to beat me!" Thus, a some what gaming scene was started for it. The only reason it is where it's at now is because it's been out for years already.
I wouldn't even classify Melee nor Brawl as a real fighting game. The depth they have and the learning curve for them both really isn't anything compared to Virtual Fighter, Tekken, SFII Turbo, SF 3S, CvS2 and many more titles.
Either way at the end of the day, both of them are just casual games where friends can have fun with and try to best one another.

Melee had a very high learning curve for tourney level play. Comparing it to things like Virtua (no l ;D) Fighter or Tekken is almost irrelevant, because the gameplay is so radically different. Hell, just comparing SFII Turbo and SF Third Strike is silly -- the games contrast each other drastically.
I go with Melee for competitive fighting. Brawl is still a game I enjoy a lot though -- Wi-Fi is a huge bonus.

Since Fire responded to most of this already, I'll focus mainly on the party game thing.
Yeah, the entire series was MEANT to be just a fun party game, but the random things put in, and some oversights that were left in(Wavelanding put in, Wavedashing ignored, LCanceling which led to SHFLing was put in, no idea where Jump Canceled Grabs would be on this, Crouch Canceling, Jab Grabs, Chain Throws, Tech Chase Grab, ect.) made it far more technical and left possibilities for a great competitive community that still thrives(4.4 Million accounts on smashboards).
Honestly, Smash has far more potential competitively than at LEAST 90% of fighters and fps games. Halo is a game that HAS a competitive scene, its borderline pointless for it to have one. Everything it does pretty much, CS does better, and with Halo 3, half the match is grenade/brheadshot, which isn't hard, at all. Now that COD4 has come out, theres no reason for Halo to be the main counsel FPS tbh.
But yeah, back on smash. The fact is, Smash HAS no comparison IN the Fighting game community, which leaves it untouched pretty much, even if Sakurai doesn't like it.

I'd say I like Melee more, except I suck at wavedashing and all that.

Cybernetic Ghost, I'm pretty sure you like Melee for all the wrong reasons.
Wavedashing sucked, first of all. They didn't kill this game for skilled players if that's what you think; it's just that the balancing of all the combat will be awkward for hardcore melee-ers.
Though I do agree with you that tripping is stupid.

I have mixed oppinions.
Melee, I agree was much faster. I also think that it was much more challenging. It took me over five monthes to get all of the characters, and I still haven't beaten that stupid last event match. In Brawl, I've only had it for two weeks and I have every character in the game except Jigglypuff and Toon Link.
Brawl, is an awsome game. But there are several things wrong with it. For starters, it's much easier than Melee. I beat the story mode on Hard in a little over a week. All of the bosses are Panzies (as my brother would say) except Tabuu. And even he wasn't that hard. In Brawl, I can take down three level seven NPC's without breaking a sweat.
They're both great games, so I'm going to say a tie.

I don't think liking it for my reasons makes it the wrong ones. This is entire topic is based on opinion.
I don't see Wavedashing as anything bad, because it was VERY simple to do. If you can't wavedash, go mess around with it for 5 minutes. You won't be great at it, but you should easily be able to get the just of it. Implementing it and other advance techs and not relying on them, but just using them as something else to mindgame people with are what made Melee, melee. It opened up far more doors than Brawl currently has opened, and probably than Brawl even has in its house.
I like Melee, because it has more potential as a competitive game, and even as a party game, I still find it more fun. Now, Brawl can BE competitive, but so can anything.
Rock, Paper, Scissors could in theory be played competitively, but that doesn't mean its on the same level as Chess.

Brawl is a good game and they added a lot, but I think i prefer Melee because the game plays at a much faster pace and Roy is in Melee.
PS: Roy is clearly better than Marth.

I say Brawl, you have wi-fi and all that stuff including the new characters with awesome smash attacks and brand new stages. But melee is pretty good too, it gives for a challenge. So when you think about it, it's almost like an tie.

Definetly Melee. I liked the faster gameplay and Mewtwo. Brawl's wifi is just the bare necesities, Tripping is annoying as heck, and the story mode is a real let down. I'm not saying Brawl isn't fun, it is quite fun in fact, but I felt melee just played better for me.

Lol so true.
I do think Brawl's music was an awesome job and it alone is worth the 50 bucks.
Melee > Brawl though

Hmm. I liked Brawl better. I could never really get into Melee. I honestly didn't care Brawl existed at all until I heard how much better it was than Melee. I like the characters better (though I wish Mewtwo was in it still), the adventure mode, the stages... pretty much everything.

Here's my take on the issue...
Melee has Mewtwo. DO NOT WANT.
Brawl has Lucario. WANT
