I use '>>' and '> __________>' all the time.

'> ___>' always has a space but can have various amounts of underscores.

xD

But yeah, I prefer '> ________>' to '>>' but I use '>>' more than '> ___________>'.

According to what I've seen, the opposite is true.

To me, >> looks like Fast Forward and << looks like Rewind. And >.> and <.< just dont look right. Not to mention it's harder to make these because the . doesn't need the Shift button while the > and < do. And the _ as well. This leaves me with >_> and <_<.

Most people prefer > to < because English is read from left to right. I'm one of them. So >_> it is.

Finally, what is the optimal number of underscores? I use one for convenience's sake, but let's see when it's stretched.

>_> >__> >___> >____> >_____> >______> >_______> >________> ... >______________________________________>

<_< <__< <___< <____< <_____< <______< <_______< <________< ... <______________________________________<

When stretched too long... it loses its awesomeness as shown. So I usually keep it short. In my opinion, 2 and 3 underscores are the best, and 1 and 4 underscores are close behind, but I still use just one underscore all the time.
