What kind of music do you mostly listen to?

I mostly listen to Alternative music.

Stardy
04-24-2009, 10:20 AM
Everything really.
My favorite is, as of right now, Punk, BUT I listen to a hell of a lot of Rap, Rock, Pop, Metal and Video Game stuff. As we speak i'm downloading some Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start, Minibosses and Chamillionaire stuff (Before, you ask, it's legal, Cha. released two mixtapes for free, Minibosses have uploaded the whole Brass album online and Up Up Down Down... have relased pretty much everything they have sang on their website. That gives me an idea for a topic...) yet my music folder contains stuff like Trigger the Bloodshed, blink-182, Metallica, Linkin Park, Fightstar, abit of everything really.

My musical taste is all over the place. I dabble in almost everything, except for gospel. The only country I can stand is Johnny Cash, and some could say that Neko Case is country.

I love country (not the "old" type, however), like singers Garth Brook and Racal Flatts, etc. I also like Pop and Halo music.

I also have the soundtrack for Spirit and Cars XP

More recently, I've taken a liking to Jon Bon Jovi, Coldplay, and one song by Three Days Grace ("Animal I Have Become").

Sooo...

Likes: Movie music, country, pop, videogame music
Neutral: Techno, some rock, classical (Josh Groban is to love XD)
Dislikes: Hard rock, heavy metal

'Alternative rock' I guess you could call it for the most part. However, I also listen to rock, electronic and a small bit of hip-hop/rap and country.

Genre(s): Heavy Metal, Thrash Metal, Black Metal, Death Metal, Melodic Death Metal, Technical Death Metal, Crossover-Thrash, Hair Metal.

That pretty much covers it.

I'm not familiar with every genre of genres (Thrash Metal, Heavy Metal, Hair Metal, it's just Metal to me.), but I listen mostly to Metal, Grunge, Punk-Rock, and Rock, most of the time. I listen to other stuff, like Death Cab sometimes. That's more when I'm in a happy mood though. n_n

Whatever appeals but generally NOT rap, country, metal or indie..

It tends to be mostly trance I listen to, but my two favourite bands happen to be A and Genesis. If we're going by times, I'd say 80's and 90's are my thing, I HATE today's music with passion!!! After the year 2000, music just went downhill and now I can't stand putting on the radio >v>

I'm not so hot with identifying genres. Mostly cos I hate to pigeonhole things. I'll list the bands and artists I'm playing most right now, instead.

Sikth, Hadouken!, Enter Shikari, Wombats, Maximum the Hormone, Metro Station, Saves the Day, At the Drive-In, Jimmy Eat World, The Get Up Kids, You Me At Six, CKY, Tool, Set Your Goals, Pennywise, Rage Against the Machine, Glassjaw, Something Corporate...

Screw it I could go on forever. That was from skipping through a random play all on my MP3 player. So I guess you could lump most of that into an odd mix of Emo/Punk/Metal with some indie for good measure.

Woodchuck
05-06-2009, 11:33 PM
Running through my mp3 player, I see...

Heavy Metal, Power Metal, Death Metal, Melodic Death Metal, Doom Metal, Progressive Metal, and most importantly: Thrash Metal.

I still listen to a little Metalcore/Deathcore every now and then, but not as much as I used to.

Oh, and Country. Country is awesome.

I'll listen to anything that sounds good to me. As long as I like the lyrics I'll listen to it. People always tell me I have a random selection of songs on my ipod. It goes from rock to rap to classical to metal to (rarely)country to anything else that I like.

AKATheTitan
05-07-2009, 01:22 AM
Metal, specifically Heavy, Speed, Power, Folk, and Thrash.

Some rock, though in the end it really comes down to songs instead of bands.

Some techno. Whoo.

Blues, RARELY.

Orchastral music.

Video Game Music. I'm serious, I have songs from Megaman X, Gauntlet: Dark Legacy, Halo, Final Fatnasy, etc. on my Zune. I like music pieces that are epic, and video games usually have them.

To be more specific than my previous post, I'll do what Jake did and search through my iPod for genres. A lot of them are technically incorrect, but you'll get the idea.

- Alternative (it's Weezer, okay?! IT'S WEEZER!!)
- Battle Metal
- Black metal
- Celtic/folk metal
- Classic Rock
- Death Metal
- Epic folk/viking metal
- Folk metal
- Folk/power metal
- Gothic Rock
- Hard Rock
- Heavy Metal
- Humppa-influenced folk metal (probably the most accurate genre I have, to be honest.)
- Industrial
- Metal (over half of my library is called 'Metal'.)
- Musicals/Broadway (It's the Circle of Life from The Lion King broadway musical. xD)
- Pop rock (The Rasmus.)
- Pirate metal
- Power metal
- Rock (Why is Fear Factory put down as Rock? .__.)
- Viking metal

Mann, my music taste is up the wall. I can't decide what I like anymore.

Basically, I'll go for any electronica, screamo and/or grunge-techno. Preferably all three, mixed.

But I'd say at this given moment, I'm more into screamo. But, you know, interesting screamo.

More like.... I Set My Friends on Fire, TDWP, or Enter Shikari than others.

Oh, here goes a ramble?

My music taste is crazy, pretty much. It goes from everywhere. Anyways. My favorite would be indie music. Things like Of Montreal, Tokyo Police Club, Arcade Fire, The Flaming Lips, and anything else with an accent. xD I also dig a lot of Techno, Electronica, and Dance. Daft Punk? Benny Benassi, Justice, Breathe Carolina, Tune Up, 3OH!3, and a bit of a guilty pleasure: Lady Gaga. I really basically love any kind of music, except Rap and Hip Hop, Pop and such. I like metal a bit? I'm not hxc, really. But some is okay. Yeah.

i am lovin Godd Charlotte's new song.... i cant remember what its called, but it is my current fav!

i really like the pop genre, and all of you who say you "hate it with a fiery passion" need to get over yourselves because i think that you are TRYING to hate it, there's actually nothing wrong with it, it is music...so people listen to it, it's not their fault that ppl love their songs.... you are just TRYING to set yourself away from it all, so dont trash on it!

hmmm.... i am really enjoying Jordin Spark's new song: "Tattoo".... it kinda sounds like a Beyonce/some ballad singer.... also, although i realize it is very old, My Chemical Romance's "Teenagers" is still at the top of my list

omfg, how could i forget to mention Paramore? they are freaking awesome! (too bad they dont play it on the radio around here, i only ever get to see it on TRL)

the music video is pwnful... especially when she cuts that girl's hair.... ROFL!

Yesterday my dad bought Carrie Underwood's new c.d. (my family are HUGE country music fans, living in GA and everything)

it is an amazing c.d. her song: "I know you won't" is outstanding & one of the best vocals of the past decade or so IMO.... you should really check it out, it wont be a waste

i have a really odd choice in music: Country/Punk... hehe

GG.

I can fault two people for being immature, and anyone that gets involved. I gave my two cents, but clearly a couple of people lack the sense to man up a bit here and realize that they're arguing over something stupid that shouldn't have existed in the first place.

As for me, I listen to a whole slew of music.
Classical (<3), Hip Hop, Country, Boy Band, Pop, Rock, Emo Rock, Art Rock, Progressive Rock, Metal, a bit of death metal, Metalcore, folk, techno, soudntrack, video game soundtrack, and a few others I can't quite think of. These are probably my mains.

Hunting High and Low - Stratovarius (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ljor_b1DiY8): Seriously the only song by them I like. I saw them live and they were too. much. power. metal. I can only listen to this song. If it starts playing another Stratovarius song my ears start bleeding. When I saw them this was the only song I stayed for, basically. We left early.

Rache der Kobolde - Slartibartfass (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZ9ZTUJ9NeY&feature=related): The reason I searched these guys is because their name made me laugh for a very long time. I have no idea what the hell it means, but come on. Slartibartfass. But they sound a lot like a Finntroll/Trollfest mixture only not as epic as Finntroll and slightly more sane than Trollfest, who have lyrics such as 'would you like to take a ride in my lovely boat?' etc. Overall, pretty good stuff.

I'll post some more when I find the time. :D

Eluveitie are from Switzerland, I think. They sing/growl in both English and Gaulish.

Týr I think are from the Faroe Islands. They sing in English and occasionally something else... I dunno what language it is. xDD

Stratovarius I'll take a wild guess and say Germany. Lemme just check. ... I was wrong, they're from Finland. K. They sing in English.

Slartibartfass (xDD) are from Germany. They probably growl in German.

I will listen to almost anything 'rock-related' and metal. At first I didn't really like the screaming aspect of metal, but it's not bad now. :] I am no where near a metal head of course, but whatever.

The only stuff I really don't listen to is:
Rap (I will occasionaly listen to some that has a point, but meaningless lyrics about sex is annoying)
Pop :/ (Sometimes, maybe, not often. Probably not. :| Only when I am outnumbered in the car)

...that is about it. Everything else is pretty cool with me. Even Classical (I can't deny a well put together Choral peice. :D *Chorus nerd*)

Shoegaze: The American Dollar, Silversun Pickups, Smashing Pumpkins, Deftones (quite possibly my favorite band of all time), and I suppose early Sonic Youth would count.)
http://i39.tinypic.com/wl5ggj.png

Only TWO of those bands are Shoegaze: Silversun Pickups TO AN EXTENT, and Sonic Youth's early work. The rest is rubbish and you should be ashamed of yourself for lying about genres or just being THAT stupid.

Deftones, Smashing Pumpkins (which are the entire reason why Silversun Pickups exist), are all in that genre. I suppose you could cross off TAD, but they still have similar instrumental sounds.

Eh, I like the Deftones. They get better with age like a fine wine.

Lately, I haven't listened to much mainstream music at all. I've really been getting into the bands I posted in The Metal Legion 2.0 like Horn, Ulver, and Temnozor.

And by trying to make me look stupid, you somehow fail to realize that Nu Metal and Alternative Rock are the most broad terms you can use to define a band.

Shoegaze is an incredibly tiny definition, and Smashing Pumpkins and Deftones both fit into it. I mean seriously, have you even listened to some of their songs that weren't singles?

The shoegazing sound is typified by significant use of guitar effects, and indistinguishable vocal melodies that blended into the creative noise of the guitars.[1]

Vocals are typically subdued in volume and tone, but underneath the layers of guitars is generally a strong sense of melody. However, lyrics are not emphasized; vocals are often treated as an additional instrument.[2] While the genres which influenced shoegazing often used drum machines, shoegazing more often features live drumming.

Good one.

More recently I've been listening to a lot of metalcore, and Mitch is getting me into a bit of death metal. In addition, my love for classical music has grown, especially piano/orchestra sonatas and ballads, making it the continued topper of my list of likes.

I listen to most things of the 'rock' variety and some pop. J-pop and J-rock is included in that. Mostly, though, I just listen to anything that sounds good, so I tend to branch off some as well. About the only genres I don't like are hardcore rap and hardcore metal/death/whatever, and most country. In all, though, I tend to prefer bands/artists/songs over a specific genre of music. I listen to a lot of Jason Mraz, The Killers, and L'Arc-En-Ciel, among other things.

Nu-Metal isn't at all a broad sound. Alternative Rock can be, though. I guess. If you're lazy about it.

Yep. Not any is Shoegaze. Smashing Pumpkins is Alt. Rock, Grunge, Post-Punk, Hard Rock, sometimes Pop Rock, but Shoegaze? Man, you'd have to smoke some crazy ganja to get any

Wikipedia quote
Yes. Wikipedia and music. Brilliant. So it's either
a) don't actually know anything about Shoegaze
b) you're lazy with this argument

Shoegaze music does focus on guitar effects quite heavily, but the quote is ridiculous and doesn't help. I mean really, "underneath the layers of guitars is generally a strong sense of melody" is
the most broad term you can use to define a band.

Now here's a way to describe Shoegaze. AN ACCURATE WAY THAT IS COMPLETELY RIGHT.

Layers of guitar effects which can make 1 or 2 guitars sound like several (KINDA LIKE POST-ROCK, BLACK METAL, ETC.) which usually builds into a very ethereal and euphoric sound, prominent bass guitar (typically 5-6 notes), DRUMS ARE OPTIONAL AND JUST THAT: DRUMS. Vocals are usually very lilting and dreamy.

Kind of like, oh, you know, this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8paDhfGQH4E).

That's definitely not Smashing Pumpkins or Deftones style.

I'm done with this topic now; I just needed a good rage earlier this afternoon to get me started on a review. THANKS FOR THE HELP, GUY.

Ummm, Smashing Pumpkins is Shoegaze. I've listened to them since I was a teen. The song Soma from Siamese Dream has up to 40 overdubbed guitar parts. Corgan even stated that he loves the genre Shoegaze and gets a lot of what he does from the genre. Though a lot of their songs can be classified into other genres, it's mainly Shoegaze.

o u...

As for me, I listen to various genres of music. I will always love metal, but I've listened to it in stages lately. When I do listen to it, I usually look for melodic or gothic atmospheres with aggressive thrash or black metal guitars. If not, I'm trying to chill by turning on 80's Japanese heavy, thrash, power, or speed metal.

Otherwise I'm usually listening to J-rock, mostly because the bass is featured very prominently and the guitars can usually be distinguished distinctly from any other country.

However my favorites are

L'arc-en-Ciel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHo_SMGncFY) (I'd also suggest "Flower")
Malice Mizer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v12i6vJj988)
Merry (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wR7SlIWoHB4)

Note that Merry are at times metalcore (and even when they do that, I find they do it well, which is something I seldom say of a metalcore band), but other songs are more jazzy and bluesy. They're avant-garde j-rock, quite a combination.

Hip-hop and Rap, I like, too. I might have been listening to "Rap Rock" or "Rap metal", too (I'm pretty sure it was called Rap rock and metal if there's a combination of both).
