View Full Version : My HDD keeps shutting my whole system down

After 15 minutes, my computer decides to be a prick and shut off. Even after I reformatted. Any advice, or should I get a better HDD?

It might not even be your harddisk. It could be a number of things. Is it an instant shut off? That could easily be a motherboard or PSU problem... although if you were able to format and reinstall Windows in one sitting, I daresay it'd be more a motherboard issue.

When it cuts off, does it give you the Windows Shutoff screen, or does the computer just kick off immediately? If the latter, it could just be your power supply going out on you.

The latter, yes, but I believe this post more:

I just bought a new 500 GB HDD, and when I was formatting it and installing XP, I get some errors about some files can't be saved. Possible motherboard issue?

If you can, try installing it to another harddisk to see if the issue is reproduced. If so, it could be narrowed down to a really dodgey XP install or a mobo issue.

Tazz The Human Suplex Machine says:
I can't see the page for some reason.
Post that my computer's windows freezes up after an hour, so I'm forced to manual restart, and wait for it to freeze up again.

Hm... now that's an interesting development. It's quite possibly a dying motherboard, then. If he can, try seeing if he can use another harddisk or install a different OS to see if similar results are replicated.

Somehow I read that as 'ADD.' xD

...sorry, I know nothing about computers.

Would that mean install a different OS on a new partition?

You could do that, or just wipe your HDD and reinstall another OS. Maybe another version of windows or a linux distro. Hacs (DIY Macs) are very hardware specific so no-go there. Try ubuntu, since it's very GUI friendly and has a large userbase.

Currently TRYING to download Ubuntu, but my internet is at it's slowest right now.

EDIT: Hell no I'm not wasting whatever download limit I have left for 699 MB. I'll probably download it at the school.

Don't forget to burn it to a disk. ;p

Well, the computer network at the school STILL isn't working. Until the dick who runs the network at the school decides to fix it, I'm forced to work with this BS comp.

You could always build a new computer with that HDD. Save your money.

Is it cheaper than buying a new comp? Because I know a computer store that sells PCs for over 800. Average quality specs, though, but, the comp I have now costed me 1500 bucks and within a year, it's broken down more than my car. (Which is quite a lot.)

Is there online stores that sell motherboards and cases?

All sorts. In America, I believe "Newegg" is the go (if that's what it's called).

I've discovered that you have to be careful when buying computer-store made PCs - while the shop I work at certainly don't make any dodgey computers, the other computer shop down the road is quite bad.

What wattage is your PSU?

I'm not sure, really.

But, I should try Newegg for a new PSU, I guess.

I dunno if I'd go that far yet, since we're still not sure if that's the issue here.

The PSU should have a sticker on its side saying its power output and what not.

You can usually get good quality computers for less if you build them. Check Newegg.com, and some other sites that I can give you if you want.

i think its your PSU... it's possible that your HDD isn't getting the juice it needs from the power supply. Faulty power supply= damage the mobo. I had the same problem with my 800-watt, it would randomly shut off after 30 mins or more. Once i got 1000 watt PSU never had the problem again.

lolk

I'll just say it's extremely low, so I'm going to order a new one. Anything worthy for the man with only 100-150 to spare a month?
