The Harsh Truths
A Fan Fic by Vex, of Team Trainer

Prologue: Grey Past, Black Future

When you think of the Pokemon world, what do you think of? Blue skies, eternal friendships? A land where everything is perfect? OK. What about pollution? Or war?

Got you there, didn't I?

The world of Pokemon is not so plentiful as Nintendo would have us think. Not by a long way.

Take Lavender Town, for example. What a peaceful, calm place where everything is just right for a perfect lifestyle...hah - if only. Lavender Town has a terrible pollution problem, and disease is rampant in the area. Hoenn is frequented by terrorists who believe that the recent war with Johto (which killed millions) was wrong and demand reasons for going to war, not satisfied with original explanations. These terrorists have all but destroyed Fortree City, where the forest is now a barren waste.

And the Pokemon aren't getting on well, either. Some species, such as Dewgong, are near extinction thanks to Pokemon poachers who go to Seafoam Islands to kill Dewgong for sport.

This is the story of those who still have the interests of general good at heart.

CHAPTER ONE: DARK TODAY

"To your right, you will see a Dewgong. Let's stop and watch it do its favourite tricks."

The voice of the tour guide made it sound like the Dewgong was enjoying its time in the PokeZoo. Sami looked across at the glass wall, and saw behind it, in a tiny enclosure, a Dewgong standing waveringly on one flipper balancing a ball on its nose, which then dropped the ball. The keeper behind it flicked his hand and a whip crashed down on Dewgong's side. The pained expression on its face made Sami want to cry with shame for the human race. How could the keepers do things like that and get away with it?

As the tour group started to move again, Sami saw a young boy with a group of others saying "Did you see the way that he whipped that stupid seal? Wicked!" She couldn't help it. She walked up to the boy and said quietly; "That wasn't funny...that was a cruel thing to do. Whipping Pokemon is wrong."

The boy looked at Sami as if she was stupid. "Who cares? It was cool!" The group of kids marched off, laughing as they went.

Sami stood still and watched the tour group leave. The anger boiled up inside her, but she knew that she shouldn't let it show. Now she was the only one left in the Dewgong area. The keeper had left and the Dewgong was now lying down. Pressing her face against the glass, Sami saw dozens of raw red marks from where it had been whipped previously. She desperately wanted to break the glass and set it free...

"Don't worry..." her eye met the Dewgong's and the two stared at each other. "I'll get you out of here."
