Axel had chosen to use Gengar, a very tricky Pokémon, to oppose the mechanic and robotic Pokémon, Porygon 2, who scanned Gengar as soon as he was released from the Pokéball with a red-laser beam, similar to the one used in supermarkets. I shuddered when I imagined Porygon 2 searching in his database for the battle info that he'd use against Gengar, adapting his own code for the battle. I saw Porygon2 levitating slightly, learning to control the new ability, acquired by analyzing Gengar's data.
Axel lost no time, and immediately set Gengar to take advantage of the vapor coming from the power plant's ventilation shafts to misty the whole area. It worked wonderfully on Porygon 2, whose lack of arms made it impossible to rub-off the irritation of his eyes.
For the time being, Porygon 2 was as blind as a newborn duckling.
Gengar then made copies of himself, surrounding the enemy outside the smoke perimeter, then began performing a move known as hypnosis. The hypnosis is a technique used by psychic-like Pokémon, in which mind waves are sent through the eyes to mesmerize a foe that is distracted by a visual stimulus, such as Hypno's Pendulum, or Alakazam's spoon, or Gengar's mysterious eyes.
A Pokémon distracted in the visual bait would stop momentarily thinking about being "conscious" for a moment, and that's when the hypnotic waves would strike and render it asleep. This combo of Axel was very complex, and I was sure he had practiced it before, or at least, tried to perform it. But there was a factor Alex had inadvertently added to the equation that made it fail: The smoke. The irritant gas had forced Porygon 2 to close its eyes, and made him invulnerable to the effects of Gengar's combined mind waves.
Of course, neither Gengar nor him had managed to see that the Hypnosis had failed completely... yet
Before the Gengar struck with their combined Hidden Power mirage image attack, the smoke had begun to dissipate by an unknown source of wind from inside the smoke area. Gengar charged into the center of the smoked area, and it became apparent that Porygon2 had not fallen asleep. It was standing there, somehow ventilating his surroundings by rotating his right and left wings. He still had his eyes closed due to the irritation of the smoke, though, and it was struck on the chest by the barrage of Hidden Powers, backing-off a few steps with each sphere that hit it. His whole body suddenly changed colors, it was now painted in dark grey and black colors. Was this another Trace ability? Or was this another attack?
Whatever the reason, it opened his eyes - now gray too - and quickly released a barrage of dark-colored spheres, each one targeting one of the Gengar copies, which were at least thrice in size of Gengar's original attack. How could this be?
