Prebattle

Hello there, I'm a referee whose prebattle style changes every time she writes one.

Now that the introductions are over, I can tell you about the island and the two Trainers who were getting ready to make super-powered animals maul each other for glory.

The island was indeed a beautiful sight. The sun, high in the sky, was making the ocean glow golden. I had ridden my Gyrados up here to try and catch some peace and quiet, maybe do some swimming, or just lie and read beneath the coconut tree.

However, my plans were ruined soon. A speedboat carrying two arguing boys - dang boys - pulled loudly up to the island. They hopped out, ignoring me, and pull a Pokeball each out of their pockets. I groaned as I realized I was about to be treated to a Pokemon battle - and as a referee, it was my duty no matter what to make sure that the battle was fair and all that good jazz. Ready to settle their argument, the Trainers threw down. When the red light of the Pokeballs cleared, a ghostly, blue Dusknoir and a little blue-and-white serpent sat in the sand, ready to duke it out. Fisticuffs and all that. So much for a peaceful island, eh?

Round One

Mermaid wasn't particularly thrilled about facing a Pokemon whose kind was notorious for assisting Primal Dialga and nearly getting the world sealed in darkness forever. However, she wasn't about to give in. She began to retch, throat convulsing and burning as she brought a foul purple sludge into her mouth, slopped together from all the acid - and other nastiness - from her insides. She opened her mouth as wide as possible, then spat the glop of fizzing purple poison at Dusknoir. The specter had no time to dodge, and the sludge hit him right between the eyes on his belly. His face soured with agitation as the poison leached into him.
[Toxic: Dusknoir, +TOX; ImmaMermaid, -6% Energy]

Dusknoir already knew how to use poison; however, a refresher course wouldn't hurt. He began to replay Mermaid's actions in his mind: exactly how she had done what she had done. Before long, his gut began to churn and he could feel slop surfacing to the mouth on his stomach. He grimaced and swallowed - so to speak - the toxic substance, feeling annoyed. All he had learned was the way heartburn felt.
[Mimic (Failed): Dusknoir, -2% Energy]

Mermaid suppressed a sigh of relief as her opponent failed to attack. She wasn't about to do the same, however, and she knew she had to take every chance she had to gain ground on her opponent. She glowered at Dusknoir, rushing forward as fast as she possibly could. Taken aback by her ferocity - which was as strong as a Tyranitar's despite her unimpressive size - he had no chance to dodge as Mermaid slammed into him. He was actually blown back an inch or so - leaving himself with a decent bruise, and Mermaid panting tiredly.
[Dragon Rush: Dusknoir, -10% HP; ImmaMermaid, -16% Energy]

Dusknoir would love to turn this attack on his foe. He eagerly began to remember Mermaid's actions - ordinarily, his brain would be too full of new knowledge to learn again, however, Dusknoir had learned nothing from Mermaid's last move, and now he was picking up Mermaid's skill. He decided to test it out. His eye flashed, and then he let a wave of brutish anger overwhelm him. He rushed at the palm tree, making it groan in protest. A lone coconut fell, which nearly hit the random-seeming, by-standing girl nearby on the head.
[Mimic: Dusknoir, -4% Energy]
