Default Foreign languages in Fanfiction

This is just a thread I wanted to start general discussion about foreign languages in our fanfictions. Do we have other languages in our fanfiction? Does a character knowing a certain language(s) add to their personality for you? Are you interested in adding foreign languages in your fanfiction? Do you want foreign languages in your fanfiction, but don't want to rely on Babelfish or Dictionary.com? Did you make a fake language for your fanfiction? Type away.

I am starting to use Latin in all of my composition matter of late. I'm becoming more proficient in Latin, so it interests me more.

Oh, and if anyone wants to add Latin (quotes, conversational, etc) to their stories, let me know what you want and I can translate for you. :3

I... sort of have a different language in my fic. But I made it up. xD

Don't think I'd ever put in another real language in a fic, unless it was part of a character's design and they loved to say little bits of stuff for fun. Momiji from Fruits Basket! >w<

Personally, it annoys me. Unless you're told what it means, or it's supposed to be a mystery or something...

...Kind of. I had one character in a list of fic character ideas that spoke English half the time and French the other half. She was pretty much insane, though, and the only reason it worked was because the main understood French.

In a fan fiction I'm writing for another site, some of the names are words from another language. Basically it allows me to take names that would seem horrible in English, such as Green Man, and turn them into something that sounds better, Gwerden (It's a fantasy).

Interesting thread. Well, I used a bit of Finnish in my last chapter of My Guardian Angel. I'm pretty sure I've used Spanish a couple of times before. But all of these were to come up with names or things or people. I've never had a bilingual character really because:

1) How would French, for example, fit into the Pokemon world?

2) I only know English and Spanish.

Mmm, it would be interesting to have a bilingual character. I know I'll be using more Finnish for names and stuff, but maybe I'll have a character speak in Spanish or Spanglish. I am fluent in both. :P

Well, Fantina and Juan are French, no?

I use Japanese, Greek and Latin names a lot. As I mentioned earlier, I want to start using Latin more. And Greek. That would be nice.

Yeah, but even though it's cannon, I like to keep my fan fics as realistic as possible. I'm just a perfectionist that way. *shrugs*

The only integration of real-world languages in my fanfiction is probably the region of Moga, used for names. Mostly I clump all sorts of names from different parts of the world into the Pokémon World as one entity, but after creating that region to justify strange surnames in canon roleplaying, I felt that the Japanese-named characters (and no, for you anti-Wapanese activists, my stories aren't overrun by them) ought to have their own region to blame when they have names that are more drastically different than the rest of the world. This region, as a result, was behind such wonders as Hikaru and Rin. Otherwise, my only foreign language is the one we've all heard before in some form or another, Pokémian. (It's got a lot of dialects.)

Like Kumori I plan to make a language up but it wouldn't work.

Personally, in one of my older fanfics, using my other veteran account, I used Hebrew for a few lines. Don't think anybody understood it though.

I only really use different languages in fanfics when thinking up new names for my characters. :L I would like to use Spanish in a fanfic, though, since I can speak a little of it :). Or some sort of Northern European language, despite being horrible at German and Finnish :L

I used a bit of Hebrew in one of my fan fics (translations next to them). I enjoyed using different languages that I know, or know a few sentences from. I think it would be a good innovation to have a main character that did not know English.

I'm halfheartedly writing a Bioshock fanfiction; two of my OCs speak some Spanish, but not a lot. It's mostly the dude; the other character just picks it up from being around him for a long time.

I think that using a different language for no real reason is pretty lame... Like filming a movie in black and white because it's "artsy". Works great for creating hidden meanings behind names, though.
