Default The Cthulhu Mythos

So I've recently been reading a lot of the Wikipedia pages on the various Lovecraftian dieties after coming across a game where Cthulhu figured prominently, and thought "Damn this stuff would make for an amazingly epic story". So I'm just wondering how many people here know anything at all about it.

Wikipedia Page, in case anyone's curious.

Dali: "You're right. Let's take some cats and splash them with water."

I've always been interested in the Cthulhu Mythos. As I understand it, the first person to write a book about it did so because he had a recurring dream that involved the beast. It is said that Cthulhu's appeared to quite a few people in their dreams. o:

Lovecraft often wrote about stuff from his dreams, and dreams figure highly in Cthulhu's lore, being a dead dreamer who has enormous psychic power and can influence people's dreams.

Cthulhu is also pure dobbin evil in ball that can't be defeated.

I've read a Lovecraft story where Cthulhu plays the integral part, but that's been at least 3 years ago. There's normally a (possibly brainwashed) cult that lives under the guise of a secret society (or the like) that worships it as their god. And for centuries have been waiting for the right time to open the portal to unleash Cthulhu, the destroyer who will bring eternal darkness, or something along those lines. That's actually where I got the idea for my "And as the Wind Blows" for the evil cult story (probably haven't read it, twas a LOONG time since I posted anything lol).

Other than that--I recommend finding a Lovecraft short story collection and reading the story with Cthulhu mentioned in it.

Fact, not Opinion: Lovecraft is the best classic horror writer.
