Does pop culture deserve serious study?
I think that popular culture should be studied in schools, especially music. Often the challenges which artists must overcome to become who they are now are very inspiring. We can learn from their perseverance and the struggles they faced, which students often experience too. We can learn that you can be anything that you want to be when you put in the effort and keep persevering.

I don't see why not. I mean we study more useless and pointless things. But this would actually be good.

Re: Does pop culture deserve serious study?
Just because you're popular, doesn't mean you're bad. A large fanbase doesn't make an artist worse, it's the artist themselves that makes them worse. A person doesn't lose talent as they gain listeners.

Pop culture could be interesting to study, for sure. I'd totally take a subject like that, I like that sort of thing and I could see myself studying that ahah.

Green Day wasn't good to begin with.
But in general, there is no real correlation between the quantity of your fanbase and the quality of your music.

I disagree. When an artist starts to get a large fanbase, they will eventually be pressured to change their style in order to please their audience, or they will lose fans because they do not change their style at all. Overall, it is a turd sandwich in which an artist will have to change eventually. With the change comes varying opinions about what is good. Now, you say Green Day was never good. I disagree. I think they were good around their beginning.

Oh, indeed they did. That's what I am saying about artists. They change because they grow popular.

Green day merely tried a different style. And hey, some people liked it. Sure the old fans were a bit "meh" about it but instead of doing more of the same, whats wrong with a fresh new style?
People spend too much time comparing "old to new" but realistically if you were just a huge fan you wouldn't need to compare but love them for what they are and what they stand for.
Also pop culture in schools is kinda meh since we learn enough just by living.
