I think the only reason you can pick up on random japanese words is because of all the japanese media you get in your life. Cantonese and Japanese have no real relation besides the whole 漢字 thing. But i'm in the same boat as you really. 我們是酷的。B)

It is all related, so it could probably be because of all their similarities, possibly.

There is a bunch of kanji in Japanese that's exactly the same in pronunciation as Cantonese, such as the word "easy". But by in large it is true that there are a lot of stuff that don't fit into this frame.
