When Ash gave Sabrina his Haunter, why didn't it evolve? - Pokemon Forum

Okay, so Ash didn't formally capture Haunter in a Pokeball and receive something from Sabrina in return, but it's the same difference to Haunter, right? X|

Because the game != the anime. No such thing as trade evolutions, that would be silly.

Even if there was trade evolutions, Ash didn't really use any sort of machine contraption to technically "Trade-Give" haunter. He just manually passed it on to her. Liek. Have it! :D

And Anime wise, anything can be pretty much godly. They all evolve when they are "ready" or "bursting with too much strength" or "trying to help their trainer or other pokemon and they go super saiyan".

Which is very silly, in my opinion, because even the manga follows on trade-evolution.

I don't think giving Sabrina Haunter really counts as trading. There are trade machines in the anime so maybe they have to be used. Ash used one to trade (and trade back) his Butterfree for a Raticate. I know he traded with Dawn during Sinnoh but I haven't seen that episode so I'm not sure if they used a trade machine or not...

I haven't seen Sinnoh episodes, but as far as I know, they haven't shown a Pokemon that evolves by trade just evolving normally, have they?

I don't think so, but there are probably many filler episodes and episodes in late Kanto through early Hoenn that I haven't seen :/

They did actually. The went into a Pokemon Center and went through the trade. So that's probably why Haunter didn't evolve. It may need to go through the machine that magically injects it full of evolution juice and tells it, "Hey you, evolve now!" and Haunter would have been all, "Yes sir!"

Besides... Gengar is no where near as funny as Haunter. It wouldn't be the same if Sabrina's funny mon was Gengar when Haunter just seems so much more hilarious.

My guess with the whole trade evolution is that a special sort of energy is emitted when trade which kind of sets the pokeball and the pokemon inside to 'know' that the person that they are being trade to is their new owner. A bit of me guessing but seeing that we now have a pokemon that only evolves when traded with a certain pokemon it makes kind of sense.

Haunter was not technically traded to her. The episode where Ash is on the St. Anne cruise ship, there is a machine built for trading Pokemon. Haunter was not traded, rather Ash simply said, "Buddy! I will be back for yah!" and then just leaves it 'til it dies.

Did Ash even actually catch the Haunter? It was a long time ago, but didn't it just agree to help him with the battle? Either way, Ash just gave Haunter to Sabrina, so there wouldn't be a trade evolution.

On the subject, what about the Clamperl in the Hoenn episode? Didn't they evolve when they were withdrawn from the PC? That doesn't make sense at all, unless all machines have some kind of radiation that forces a Pokemon to evolve.

I believe I read somewhere that Pokemon that evolve by trade are exposed by radiation from the trading machine, causing them to evolve. Ash's Haunter didn't experience that.

It was not a real trade. He just gave it to her. Also he didn't get any other pokemon. Its not a trade.
