A lot of the same concepts connect from one game to the other, and all (well, most) of them share basic principles like the battle system, items, recurring species (Chocobos, Moogles, etc.) So yeah, it may not be as closely linked as most series are, but they are still the same series.

You could say that Star Wars Jedi Knight Outcast and Star Wars Force Unleashed were a series because they share the same gameplay mechanics, just on a different engine. I think, honestly, the only thing that makes them a series is the fact they have the same name if they have no ties in story.

Then again, I could say the same about Pokemon =(
