can you get a red shard if can were i need it for a fire stone or can you buy a fire stone

If you have run out of Red Shard/Fire Stones there are heaps under sea, if not, Thief Corsolas (fish in Pacificlog) and there is a chance to get one, then go to the guy to the west of Mossdeep and get it changed.

did you get one by using theif on them

I didn't really need to, you get some during the game and you can buy Fire Stones on FR/LG.

You can use Covet, which is more reliable. I don't know but - try to make sure your Pokemon has no hold items while doing that...

Covet and Thief are exactly the same except for their type. It's the Pokemon that have the hold item chance. Thief is actually better because it hits Ghosts.
