Default Overlooking the Obvious (Part 4 of the Drin series)

Stuff; So Drin has the 15K from the Delcatty.... And the Machamp's for sale? Geez, that would have been easier than stealing. And she wouldn't have had to tell the boss they failed, either!
Pokemon to get: ???

Stuffing the Pokeballs of Meditite, Delcatty, and the Horsea in her pockets, Drin glanced around, nervously. Though she couldn’t tell if they had been caught or not, she was a fairly cautious person. “C’mon, let’s go,” She said to Brylle, in a whisper, but he appeared confused.

“But, there’s no one here. We might be able to go find the Machamp now,” He told her. “Is something wrong?”

“We’ll be caught, you idiot. They’ll have to have the Horsea guarded, or at least have a camera planted somewhere, if it’s so important to the Machamp. Let’s go.”

Grabbing Brylle’s arm, she tugged the man along behind her, not giving him time to argue. The two encountered trouble near the exit, however. The two security guards they had knocked out were gone, and in their place, stood four others, armed and angry looking.

Knowing she had to make a quick decision, Drin thrust her hand into her pocket, grabbing the first Pokeball that came to hand. It was, she knew from the slight scratch on the top, that of her Electrike. Though she doubted the Pokemon would be the most useful, she called it out anyway, before reaching for a second. They couldn’t flee now, after all, so they might as well fight.

Poochyena and Houndour soon joined Electrike, as did Gastly. Unsure of Meditite’s loyalties- And knowing that both Delcatty and Horsea would be against her- Drin didn’t even bother summoning them. Instead, she selected something else from her pocket- A smoke bomb.

Though her eyes were on her opponents, to see what they would call out, she knew Brylle had selected a few- or all- of his own Pokemon. The buzzing of their rapidly flapping wings filled her ears, and she made a mental note to get him some better Pokemon later.

As she had suspected, many of the security guards had Growlithe. They were quite a popular choice among do-gooders, perhaps because Officer Jenny used them. This, however, wasn’t of much concern to Drin. She had had a lot of practice fighting them. Briefly, she toyed again with the idea of stealing one, before tossing that thought aside. She was a brazen, shameless thief, but she wouldn’t feel right taking a dog. They were loyal, anyway, so it would be pointless. A good dog would never mold to the will of an enemy of their master- And what use had she for a dog without that determination?

Luckily for her, the guards did what they had been taught in training. They lined up, and only the first one called out his Pokemon to fight. Five Growlithe, to be precise, leaving her wondering why he hadn’t called out his sixth Pokemon. She saw another Pokeball on his belt, after all.

Still, this was not the time to be curious, unless he was holding something back. The last Pokemon might be injured or sick, or perhaps a pet, or maybe even of a type that would not get along well with Growlithe.

“We can take them,” Brylle said boldly. Drin wished he would be less overly confident, especially when he was a poor fighter. However, she didn’t have time to debate. Instead, she gave brisk orders to her Pokemon, using Rocket code hand signals when she could to avoid giving away her plans.

Taken by surprise, the first Growlithe was knocked back by a vicious Crunch attack from Houndour. The dark dog type snarled as Growlithe tried to get up, and tackled it back down before attempting to use Bite on its neck. The next of the fire dogs, trying to reach its fallen companion, was halted by Poochyena, who’s Taunt distracted it. Abandoning its attempts to reach its friend, the Pokemon snarled, and leapt at Poochyena, along with the third Growlithe. They didn’t see Electrike sneak up behind them, not until the Pokemon’s Thunder attack had hit both, at least. While the earlier of the two managed to rise to his feet again, yowling and trying to reach the first unconscious Growlithe, the other one had been paralyzed, and was easily finished by a Bite from Houndour, who had abandoned its first victim.

The electrified but conscious Growlithe spun when it realized it was too late for its friend, barking angrily at Electrike. As Mightyena and Poochyena passed by, to help Shinigami- for the Gastly was fleeing a few Flamethrower attacks- Electrike used Quick Attack, dashing at the Growlithe before it had a chance to muster up a fiery stream of flames. The Growlithe went down at once, as its companions were finished off by the swift Houndour and Poochyena.

“Yanma, try- Wait, no, he’s down. Okay, Bee- never mind…” Brylle stuttered, as Drin’s Pokemon efficiently dispatched of their foes. He felt useless, something he hated. However, there was little he could do about that at the opponent, but stand, open-mouthed, gaping at his useless Pokemon, and the foes Drin had so swiftly destroyed.

When the remaining three guards called out all their Pokemon at once, Brylle was almost glad. At least now he’d get to help. “Okay, everyone, tackle!” He ordered, red-faced, when he realized he didn’t really feel like he could give separate attacks. He had trouble focusing in fast-paced battles.

Drin, on the other hand, was watching intently, attention absorbed entirely by the battle. With good reason, too. Facing her were 17 very angry looking Pokemon, and with her partner’s bugs little more than a nuisance- Not even a true distraction- she suspected she was in trouble.

Four Growlithe, as expected, had been called. There were actually less of them than she had expected, unfortunately. One of the men had, in addition to two Growlithe, a Ninetales, Charmeleon, Magmar, and Cyndaquil. These, at least, would be easy to deal with. The man beside him, however, had a more balanced team. His Growlithe was flanked by Poliwhirl and Voltorb, with a Venusaur, and Graveler. The last man, to her relief, seemed to be less wise. His team consisted of Growlithe, Mankey, Machop, Spearow, Snubbul, and Dunsparce.

Her own Pokemon were, by now, fairly tired. Poochyena and Houndour were panting, while energetic little Electrike wasn’t moving as quickly anymore. As for Shinigami, well… He was looking quite solid for a ghost, perhaps due to being too tired to become intangible.

“Let’s get them!” Brylle announced, but Drin only sighed, and tossed the smokebomb she was holding onto. Recalling her Pokemon, she ordered Brylle in a harsh whisper to do the same, then grabbed his arm, pulling him away. The two flung themselves through the half-open doors, knocking one of the guards over in the process, and fled before his howl of pain and surprise could give away their location. Running into the night, Drin shoved Brylle ahead of her, and ran as quickly as she could, hot on his heels.

A veritable mass of Pokemon raced after the two. Thankfully, the smoke helped cover their retreat, as did the attack a few Growlithe had foolishly used- Smokescreen. In trying to remain unseen, even when it was obvious that they were following, the fire types had covered the escape of Drin and Brylle.

Thankfully, the two managed to spring off into the night unhindered, even with Brylle’s attempts to look back over his shoulder as he ran. Drin half-carried him to prevent him from tripping and falling, unwilling to leave even such an idiotic teammate behind.

Having scanned the area ahead of time in case anything went wrong, Drin was prepared. She led them quickly to a rather dismal, seedy hotel, glad that even the lights on the sign weren’t working. It read, at the moment, Lo_e_s _Ot_l. That, however, didn’t give Brylle any more of a reason to do anything stupid. The original name- Lover’s hotel- would certainly have prompted comments.

When the two reached the dingy hallway, covered in carpet that had probably been a disgusting shade of moldy-looking green even before the mold had started to grow, Drin began to relax. Though she knew it was best to always be alert, she felt safe. That was, of course, when she suddenly felt an immense heat behind her, before she fell forwards. Dimly, she saw the wall growing closer and closer, and then with a sudden THUNK, it stopped. It took her a minute to realize she was seeing concrete, and covered in plaster. Her head had gone through the wall.

Something felt wrong, but she didn’t have time to find out what, for her eyes refused to cooperate. Even as the bizarre feeling spread up her body, her eyes insisted on closing, and she fell unconscious.

"Growlithe!" Brylle yelped in dismay. However, though he wanted to, he didn't dart to Drin's side immediately. He was, after all, a Rocket, even if he wasn't the best example of a competent one.

Singemarks had spread all across Drin's clothes when the Growlithe had tackled her, breathing fire over much of her body first. Feeling faint as he looked at her- He'd seen, done even, far worse to others, but this was his partner- Brylle yanked a Pokeball from his belt. The Meditite, Gastly, and Delcatty wouldn't obey him, of course, so he was stuck using his own Pokemon.

"Beedrill!" He called, sending the large bug type flying forth from its Pokeball, "Get it!"

Hastily, he wracked his brain for a better, more descript order. He had to win this time, as Drin was at stake.
