Inside Bay Area: College Money is in the Pokemon Cards For This Kid!
-07/05/07-

Jason Chin, Winner at Santa Clara and Mountain View (PE2K Coverage of the Pokemon TCG City Championships)

Inside Bay Area has an article on Jason Chin, a very successful Pokemon TCG player who I've seen personally at the several Pokemon TCG tournaments that I have covered. I went to two different Pokemon TCG City Championships, and Jason won both of them (he has won a total of six City Championships according to the Pokemon Organized Play site). He's also won the California State Championships and Southwest Regional Championships. And now? He's trying to continue his success at this weekend's Pokemon TCG National Championships (PE2K will be there to cover the event!).

College Money is in the (Pokemon) Cards for This Kid (From Inside Bay Area)
In theory, Pokemon is an entertaining card game played with trading cards. But for Jason Chin, 10, the game is also helping him pay for college.

Jason has been playing Pokemon for four years, in part under the tutelage of his 13-year-old brother Daniel, and with friends at a Pokemon club. So far, the Mountain View boy has won $1,500 in scholarship money, and at the rate he's winning tournaments, he should be fairly well set by the time he walks into his first college class.

Awards and trophies are lined up end to end on the fireplace mantle in the family's home. He recently won a Southwest Regional Championship in Anaheim in April. This year alone, he has won four other competitions, taking home cash prizes and Pokemon supplies.

The Anaheim win also included plane tickets for Jason's family and free lodging for their Columbus, Ohio, trip where Jason will compete in a state championship this month.

Is he nervous? "Yes," he says. "Not about the competition, but about the long flight."

Yes, that could be a challenge, considering how much he wiggles and changes position as he sits on the couch.

But, it's good that he's not worrying about winning or losing. Pokemon competitions are part skill and part luck. The game involves dice rolling, so that's the luck part. He can't control that, so no use worrying about it.

The skill part is about knowing the card characters' strengths and weaknesses and developing winning strategies and defenses for them.

Heh, I've got to say that the given article link near the bottom of the post seems to have enlightened me about the world. I was inspired about how a 10-year old Pokemon fan could have such knowledge at their age, and how many dreams, goals, ambitions, whatever you call them, he had. That Jason guy really opened the world to me. Now a days, I view people around my age as jocks and jerks that just want to be cool.....or at least that's for the majority of them. But with that article about Jason, it just opens me up towards the real world.

Awesome article. =D Hope he makes it to the top.

Wow. Never knew someone would use TCG as a revenue for College.

Where I come from, Pokemon TCG is like rock bottom. Hardly anyone plays it. ;;;>>

Good luck to the kid.

Pigs always could fly. Heck, at Nationals, Pikachu was flying--wait, he's a MOUSE? WHAT?

Anyways, gj to both of them.

It looks to me like he was trying to look cool. :B But I could be wrong.

15 hundred for playing Pokemon? Back in the day when people still played the card game here all we got 10$ Hastings gift cards and a pat on the back! D: It's great that what parents could easily dismiss as a waste of money, can actually become a chance to add some serious cash to a good players college funds. Wish I would of known about this sooner though.

Daniel just won 5000. He previously had nothing at all before Nationals.
